October 2000 TRL Archive
October 2000 Recap
October was a good month, as far as TRL pop goes. SoulDecision made its debut in the beginning of the month, the pop princesses (there’s lots of them and the category is definitely expanding) were prevalent and copious, October 9 marked the “return” of the TRL staple, Backstreet Boys (after TRL practically GAVE them the Columbus Day episode), and ‘N Sync joined us at the end of the month to try to provide some competition. Ricky (surprisingly) made his presence known. Green Day and Blink-182 were unfortunately unable to maintain their spots. Limp Bizkit remained the sole rock video continuously on the countdown. October was entertaining, and prepared us for the onslaught of new music, especially from TRL core artists, that was November.
Monday 10.02.2000
10 "Who Let the Dogs Out?" by Baha Men
Opened for Hanson on their 1998 tour… That should tell you something right there… back in the Mmmbop days and everything.
09 "Minority" by Green Day
Request of the day: They’re “the original punk kids of rock!”
08 "Independent Women (Part 1)" by Destiny's Child
I REALLY like the quick “question” line they throw in there.
07 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
“It’s my favorite video man, I LOVE this video!” - Carson
06 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
05 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
Okay… this guy, Limp Bizkit, and Papa Roach... they’re NOT coming to Phoenix on the tour. I’m just a *little* upset.
04 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
He always wears like the same clothes. All the time it’s the loose-fitting BLOUSES with the collar open and the tight pants.
03 "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees
Lyric of the day: “You keep telling me you want me...” Nobody’s telling you that, sweetheart. Not even your girlfriend.
02 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
01 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
Notes:
- This day in TRL History (10/2/1998): Jesse Camps mediates Times Square debate, Backstreet Boys vs. ‘N Sync
- Ashton Kutcher of That 70’s Show visits
- Snoop Dogg visits
- Lots and lots of ideal countdowns to check out!
- Thought of the day: I seriously can’t believe it’s October already. We’ll be getting some good videos from *seasoned* TRL veterans soon… Blink-182 “Man Overboard,” Backstreet Boys “Shape of My Heart,” ‘N Sync “This I Promise You,” Eminem “Stan,” Britney “Stronger.” My goodness, I can’t wait.

Notes:

- Mystikal visits
- Kevin’s from BSB birthday today
- Sorry about the crappiness of the fact that I was forced to use my not-so-great computer.
Wednesday 10.04.2000
10 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
She’s back! We got FOUR solo women on the countdown now… as opposed to the fact that Britney used to be the only one a couple months ago.
09 "Who Let the Dogs Out?" by Baha Men
Yesterday, three fans (they have fans?… um, kidding) win the chance to be backup BARKERS on the Columbus Day 90 minute show. (Yes… barkers.)
08 "Minority" by Green Day
A fan freaks out and cries, meeting them. “We’ll just watch ‘Minority’ while she cries… and we get high ratings.” - Carson
07 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
Fred explains the VMA duet with Christina -- Apparently it was all about the nookie. I’m sure Christina’s REAL happy about that.
06 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
It’s sorta odd that she’s just walking around town, and pausing to dance in various places. But then again lots of videos have weird concepts.
05 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
04 "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees
Parodying themselves on Just Shoot Me with David Spade in a band (group) called “2 Fine.” Hehe... that’s funny. Only got to #2 on the Billboards their first week out.
03 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
They’re using this song as the background for TRL commercials. I thought it was interesting.
02 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
01 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
“It’s so beautiful to be able to go out there and see different people of different generations and different sexes just enjoying the show.”
Notes:
- Green Day visits. The release of their CD sets off like two months of CDs I’m planning on buying. (God, I’m so excited.) We got the new Wallflowers, Limp Bizkit, U2, Blink-182, and Backstreet. And, yes, I have Napster. And, yes, I’m still buying ALL them… imagine that Metallica.
- soulDecision visits and performs “Faded.” Hmmm… what’s that song about?
- New ideal countdowns and a wishful thinking. Perhaps a bigger update this weekend (MAYBE)… plus I went with orange links to sorta match TRL--you like?
- Columbus Day 90 Minute Episode: Baha Men (with performance), Backstreet Boys (confirmed)... hey you think with the NINETY minutes they could maybe play more of the videos? Somehow I’m skeptical.
Thursday 10.5.2000
10 "Who Let the Dogs Out?" by Baha Men
“Yippie-ie-o.” What does that mean? Who freaking knows.
09 "Faded" by soulDecision
08 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
07 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
06 "Minority" by Green Day
05 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
Wes is pure comedy. Dressed in glow-in-the-dark stuff, as a rapper...
04 "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees
Okay… so I was really harsh (inappropriate) on my comment Monday. I wasn’t going to put it, but it just popped up and I couldn’t resist. It makes me laugh EVERY time I read it. But here I am apologizing anyway.
03 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
“Christina got the green light to enter the gangster world from Snoop.” - Carson
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Request of the day: “‘cause I bang and I wanna be with you, Ricky!”
01 "Lucky" by Britney Spears - Pictures!
Notes:
- soulDecision debuts
- Outkast visits. This DFX show gets us lots o visitors.
- Pamela Anderson and the cast of V.I.P. visit; trivia games that make "fans" look pretty stupid, but never fail to be entertaining.
- Countdown to BSB: 3 days, 22 hours or so. (They actually have a countdown.) Meet-the-BSB contest: whoever’s able to stay locked up the longest, over the weekend. And I’m sure the Boys are REAL excited about meeting girls who seem to only have the capability to scream. Oh well. They’re promoting this one. BIG time.
Friday 10.06.2000
10 "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees
They lead off a countdown of “huge” changes. I like it.
09 "Faded" by soulDecision
Are these lovely men responsible for the absence of those dog guys? If they are, I’m starting to REALLY like this song… lol.
08 "Independent Women (Part 1)" by Destiny's Child
Is there actually going to be a Part 2? Or are they just throwing it in to follow that stupid gotta-have-one-song-with-parentheses rule? (see #4 about the futility of parentheses)
07 "Minority" by Green Day
I find it hilarious when one of the twirlers drops her baton.
06 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
And is she responsible for our down-and-out, yet favorite, white rapper Eminem and his disappearance?
05 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
04 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
Request of the day: “Because she had the voice of an angel and the dance moves of the devil!”
03 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
DRAMA! Will she be able to retire at #1?
02 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
Lyric of the day: “And... get some better rhymes.” That’s my favorite line.
01 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Whoa! People like this video! They aren’t freaked out by the hands goin’ all over him and what not!
Notes:
- KK Holiday guests hosts
- Lil’ Kim visits
- Countdown to the BSB (and the Columbus Day “extravaganza”): 2 days and 22 hours or so. Three Backstreet fans are locked today in the bunker. The MOST competent of them (the other two just squeal) is going to say: “I love you,” “Wow,” “Thank you,” and “Ohmygod.” Such eloquence.
- News with John Norris (who's obviously a BSB fan/appreciator): the Wallflowers and their new album
- TRL Premiere Mandy Moore video: “Walk Me Home” Yeah... shot in JANUARY. What’s going on?
- It’s new ideal countdown day! Last week’s ultimate is up… there’s a THREE way tie at 3, and who you think isn’t at #1. Plus there’s some random stuff updated. Check for the all-too-cool + symbol.
- Thought of the day: Do you even want to know how fast I got ALL of those Backstreet songs in that trivia medley thing? It would scare you. But, damn, I proud of myself. :)
Monday 10.9.2000 Columbus Day 90 Minutes
Top 10 Chosen by the Backstreet Boys
10 "All the Small Things" by Blink-182 (Kevin)
09 "Heartbreaker" by Marah Carey f/Jay-Z (Howie)
Thank GOD he didn’t pick the remix. Major props for that one.
08 "Bawitdaba" by Kid Rock (AJ)
AJ: “And hopefully [we’ll] work with him someday.” Um... who else remembers the lyric, shouted quite purposefully by the one and only Kid Rock... “Boy bands are trash!”? I remember.
07 "No Scrubs" by TLC (Brian)
06 "Forgot About Dre" by Dr. Dre f/Eminem (Nick)
05 "What A Girl Wants" by Christina Aguilera (Brian)
“I like the lyrical content.... The girls need to tell us guys what they want.”
04 "Livin’ la Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin (Howie)
03 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo (AJ)
02 "Freak on a Leash" by Korn (Nick)
01 "Nookie" by Limp Bizkit (Kevin)
Hmmm... Kevin got #1? Control issues?
Notes:
- Live in Times Square; approximately 6,000 people; “State of Emergency”
- Fun with quotes: "The Backstreet fans--probably the most intense of any band we’ve had here." – Carson; Howie- "They have great taste!" And here I thought Lance said that there was "no accounting for taste"?
- Baha Men perform “Who Let the Dogs Out?”
- David Boreanaz visits
- Backstreet Boys visit. And no I will not comment on their physical appearances. Well... except for to say that my hair looks EXACTLY like Howie’s. Only blonde. Okay, I’ll say two things: I’m not the biggest Nick fan, but DAMN he looked good.
- The 3 Backstreet Bunker Girls meet the guys
- Sneak peek at Eminem’s “Stan” video shoot
- Travis from Blink-182 phones and updates MTV on their “Man Overboard” video (On Making the Video next Monday)
- Backstreet Boys classic video: “I Want It That Way” (what everyone ALWAYS picks) over “Quit Playing Games,” “All I Have to Give,” “Larger Than Life,” and “Show Me the Meaning...”
- Sneak peek of the new “Shape of My Heart” video
Tuesday 10.10.2000
10 "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees
Hangs on and manages to keep the Baha Men (who, amid all the chaos, DID perform yesterday) off. Gotta love them for that.
09 "Shake It Fast" by Mystikal
08 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
07 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
Yesterday in Current Issues, I get this week’s Newsweek and guess who’s on the cover? Consider it a graduation from Teen People.
06 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
05 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
Request of the day: “Because I love Britney Spears and I wish I could get lucky with her!”
04 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
“He didn’t get any nookie... Didn’t happen.” – Christina. Carson then asked if she was hooked up to a lie detector.
03 "Ven Conmigo" by Christina Aguilera
Finally showed us the Spanish version (INTERESTING)... she has #1 singles on both the U.S. and Latin charts.
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Where to start... well one of the pop-up requests said, “’cause I want to show you guys the shape of MY heart!” God, we couldn’t even go ONE day without a retarded request like that.
Notes:
- Mystikal debuts
- Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley visit
- Backstreet Boys debut
- Ideal countdowns for last Friday are up... although I could use some more. :)
- I would've written more for yesterday, but I didn't watch the repeat. The Vikings on Monday Night Football were calling me. (5-0, baby!)
Wednesday 10.11.2000
10 "Who Let the Dogs Out?" by Baha Men
Again it seems that my seemingly innocent musings on the failure of Baha Men fans to get their outrageously stupid song on the countdown after a live performance have jinxed me. It’s bad karma. However this is better than Mystikal.
09 "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees
You gotta feel bad for them... and no, not for the normal reasons... everyone says they’ve been on almost 50 days, when really it’s only been 33.
08 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
Most Irish pop has a hard time getting heard in the U.S. (according to the wisdom of John Norris--or his cue cards). I’m thinking there’s a reason for that.
07 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
This is the only video I don’t have a comment for today. That should tell you something.
06 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
The whole jittery dancing thing to the beat plus this song’s amazing amount of overplay on the radio have combined to shape my now negative opinion on this video. Plus her pants are falling down and that does nothing for me.
05 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
I’m thinking that they should’ve stayed with the Spanish version... notice how it was void of the yellow stripping/zipper thing?
04 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
After this song finished playing on the radio the other day, the DJ finished it off by singing, “Sometimes some of their lines are stolen stolen stolen...”
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
“I guess since the Backstreet Boys have returned, Ricky Martin is nothing more than a victim.” - Carson
02 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
Will be featured on Platinum Christmas with ‘N Sync, BSB, Christina, Monica, and... DAVE MATTHEWS BAND!
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Rest safe, after a struggling first week, this song, at least on one of my local radio stations, is WELL on its way to overplay.
Notes:
- TRL Survivor game: the audience members try to guess the top 10, and have to go to the “Loser’s Lounge” when they screw up. Who tried this game? I was out.
- Scott Foley visits. Felicity (and Dawson’s Creek) tonight. My TV Night: I seriously watch 3 – 4 hours of TV on Wednesday, and only TRL on every other day.
- More Ideal Countdowns are up for last Friday. They’re a riot.
Thursday 10.12.2000
10 "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees
09 Shake It Fast by Mystikal
This song MIGHT be good if it WAS a song. There’s no beat, no melody, no noticeable singing or even rapping. It’s talking/screaming to some very weak background noises.
08 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
John Norris: “While Samanatha is running away from SOMETHING in her video...” I want to know what she’s running from. Cuz I thought the song was about loving and going TO someone... you know, to tell them something.
07 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
Lyric of the day: “Sometimes I just feel like my father. I hate to be bothered...” Whoa. Bitter. Understandable, but bitter.
06 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
05 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
Why do they no longer rotate this with “My Generation”? It’s a question I don’t have an answer to. I know that when you vote (I voted a couple weeks ago!), if you choose Limp Bizkit, they ask you to pick between the two. Maybe more people are picking Rollin’.
04 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
MTV Diary tonight: learn all about her. Blink’s was GOOD, so if you like her at all, I would watch it.
03 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
She’s actually getting a “retirement party.” Request of the day: “Britney Spears is the greatest singer and the hottest dancer on the countdown. But luck had NOTHING to do with it.”
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
He’s “in love with it.” (the song) And, wow, did he describe it intensely and passionately. But did he even write it?
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
“Instead of seeing Howie, I just saw Jesus.” – Carson. Oh god. This, the first time he made that connection, I laughed for like 10 minutes.
Notes:
- TRL Survivor winners recap. Their trip to Virgin to grab ANYTHING they wanted. Grand total: $850.00.
- Three audience members critique the evolving Backstreet style.
- Announced: Britney Spears’ 61st day
- News: ‘N Sync on The Simpsons, as themselves.
Friday 10.13.2000
10 "Faded" by soulDecision
This just HAD to make it back for the ideal countdowns. Grrreeat.
09 "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees
08 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
07 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
I can take the purposeless walking, but that flip off the building has GOT to go.
06 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
05 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
04 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
03 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
Day #62
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Pouring water on himself REALLY defeats the purpose of him being in a water-filled tank and coming out dry.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Black and blue tint… for the album Black and Blue November 21st… nice connection there.
Notes:
- Friday the 13th; Jason mask game: people in the audience try to pick the masked Jason that will have a 13 on his/her face
- Mya visits
- Tim Meadows visits: new movie The Ladies’ Man
- I’m too busy to update for ONE day (it was Friday, after all, and Friday the 13th at that), and the counter hits 10,000! I suppose none of you remember if you were the 10,000th visitor?
- It’s Friday, time to send in the ideal countdowns!
Monday 10.16.2000
10 "Independent Women (Part 1)" by Destiny's Child
09 "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees
Did you know that they’ve released FOUR albums? (Including a Christmas one...) That surprised me.
08 "Faded" by soulDecision
They’re just, like, sitting around. I thought this was weird, but if you think about it, LOTS of videos are like that. Concepts must really be hard to come by.
07 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
06 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
If I continue to hear this every 20 freaking minutes on the radio, there will be hell to pay. At least with the video you get that guy with the band-aid on his arm.
05 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
More info on the joint-video thing: online, you vote for Limp Bizkit in general. On the phone, now, if you choose to vote for the artist, they tell you that you’ve voted for Rollin’, NOT My Generation.
04 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
03 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
Don’t you just love the teaser “Britney gets Lucky in Europe.” Clever.
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Lyric of the day: “She looks like a flower, but stings like a bee, like every other girl in history.” My goodness, the riddling of clichés. And I do NOT sting like a bee. (lol)
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
This will probably use up everything I was planning on saying about this video for the next 65 days, but you can read my review anyway (it’s funny).
Notes:
- Serena Williams visits
- Dexter Holland and Noodles of The Offspring visit; world premiere video “Original Prankster.” Dexter’s wearing a Napster t-shirt AND offering a free download of their single at Offspring.com
- ‘N Sync concert contest: winner got to fly to Charlotte to watch the opening of the 2nd leg of their tour. They started by ordering ‘N Sync dolls by age (I was like, Come ON, that’s not hard!), and the quickest got the chance to pick the first limo.
- Ideal Countdowns for Friday, and the Ultimate for last Friday are up. Keep sending them in!
Tuesday 10.17.2000
10 "Original Prankster" by The Offspring
The best part of this song is the guy (it's Redman!--I just found out) during the chorus who throws in the “original prankster” line.
09 "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees
Drew has apparently gotten hitched. I won’t accuse them of copying. (KIDDING people... marriage is a normal thing, and the BSB certainly didn’t start it.)
08 "Faded" by soulDecision
Were they playing their instruments, like they are in this video, when they played at TRL? I don’t remember, but I really don’t think that the lead singer played the guitar.
07 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
06 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
“They all eventually make the move into acting.” – John Norris. Carson said he wouldn’t, but I saw on Entertainment Tonight last night that he was in Tara Reid’s next movie... as the “bad guy.”
05 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
She’s featured (along with the BSB, Sting, Enrique, etc.) on VH1’s Men Strike Back, the Pop-Up Video version. It’s seriously HILARIOUS. Those pop-up video people are astoundingly clever.
04 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
“It’s just a tremendous crowd for... a non-boyband, I guess.” – Carson
03 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
Retirement party tomorrow. Carson to Brian McFayden: “Maybe you can dress up like Britney, and I’ll be Lucky.”
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Ricky’s got some major fans. They’re keeping him ahead of Britney on her last days. I’m impressed.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
I don’t understand people who see this as a step down from the “standard” of IWITW. Because, in case you didn’t notice, NOTHING happens in IWITW. They chill around the airport doing random choreographed hand motions. Sure, the fans at the end are priceless, and I love it, but that video reeks of nothing.
Notes:
- Live in New York City. A Subway Series would NOT be cool.
- The Offspring debut
- Limp Bizkit visits for the release of Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, fan hot dog eating (DISGUSTING) contest for tickets to the Anger Management Tour
- Mini Blink-182 visits for the TRL Premiere of “Man Overboard”
- Eminem, Wyclef, Chris from ‘N Sync turn something today, it’s their birthdays. And it’s my mom’s too!
- News: ‘N Sync’s video due on Thursday; Britney’s on Making the Video next Monday.
Wednesday 10.18.2000
10 "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees
09 "Original Prankster" by The Offspring
08 "Faded" by soulDecision
07 "Man Overboard" by Blink-182
Who thought, after seeing the sketchy promos for this video, that it was going to be stupid? I did. I was wrong, though.
06 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
05 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
New album is “moving some units.” YEAH it is. It was sold out when I went to go buy it.
04 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
Carson: “Our FRIEND at #4… seems like a nice way to put it.” [??] WHAT does that mean? Just ‘cause it’s unofficial “Britney day,” Carson feels bad for Christina?
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
02 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
Highlights of a retired video: her annoyed “no” into the phone, the psycho-crazy fan, that two Britneys in one room thing.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Notes:
- Britney Spears’ Retirement Party: 65th day
- Miss Britney 2000 Pageant… not surprisingly, the only cross dresser won.
- NEWS mid-video: Rage Against the Machine breaks up. Problem with the decision-making process. “That’s… crap, man. I don’t accept that.” - Carson.
- [Side Note: Chris of ‘N Sync TOTALLY disses John Norris (dude, I like him!): he will “show you how to do the news” the next time he’s there. Riiiiight. Just ‘cause John Norris last week said “I’m not sure ‘N Sync would be here if it wasn’t for the BSB” doesn’t mean you have to be all bitter.]
- Blink-182 debuts.
- Contest winner Katie with ‘N Sync. Yes, Justin, you should be embarrassed for liking that Baha Men song. "This I Promise You" has been postponed.
Thursday 10.19.2000
10 "Dance With Me" by Debelah Morgan
Ugh. Let’s turn on the radio. Oh, what’s on? This song. Let’s change the station. Oh, what’s on? THIS SONG. 20 minutes later… rinse and repeat.
09 "Independent Women (Part 1)" by Destiny's Child
Somebody mentioned this is a past ideal countdown, but I was already gonna say something. These women aren’t independent. They follow orders of crazy, big guy Charlie; the whole operation reminds me of Charles Manson. And it’s more than just the name.
08 "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" by 98 Degrees
TRL’s still stuck on the idea that this video’s been on for 54 days. Well, it hasn’t. We’re on route to a major travesty here.
07 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
TRL Hook Up: she’s worked with ODB, Left Eye, and Jordan Knight
06 "Faded" by soulDecision
That whole close-up on the mouth’s gyrations is not sexy, guys. Especially on that lead singer. Stop trying to smile mid-note.
05 "Man Overboard" by Blink-182
Mark scared=hilarity
04 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
03 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
“This is really the gateway to our souls, this CD right now.”
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Watching himself be felt up? Being pulled into a different room, a dry one, and being felt up more? What exactly is going on?
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Nick and those papers… cracks me up.
Notes:
- Live from NYC. Separated audience: Mets and Yankees fans + Subway Series Makeovers. Carson compares it to BSB and ‘N Sync fans. But I’d like to clear something up... liking one of them doesn’t mean that you have to HATE the other.
- Debelah Morgan debuts
- New TRL Game: Hook Up. [see #7]
- Papa Roach visits. Contest for Anger Management tickets.
- This Day Last Year: Limp Bizkit and Method Man’s “N 2 Gether Now” debuted at #3. It was another crazy joint-video thing.
- Sorry for the delay on yesterday's results (there are some comments though... check it out!). I have to go write an essay on modern day heroes now. I BEST be getting that scholarship. :)
FRIDAY 10.20.2000
10 "Original Prankster" by The Offspring
I heard this on the radio today on the way home from lunch, looked at the clock, and realized it was 3:45 (it was a late lunch). I made some kind of exclamation on how I was missing TRL (it MIGHT have been profane), and my friend just laughed at me. All ‘cause of this song.
09 "Dance With Me" by Debelah Morgan
You know what’s due to be on TRL? Shaggy, “It Wasn’t Me.” I would actually enjoy seeing that song on here. (I know, it’s uncharacteristic, but I really like that song. As opposed to this one.)
08 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
He returns! And removes 98 Degrees!
07 "Faded" by soulDecision
06 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
05 "Man Overboard" by Blink-182
We want to “steer people away from the music itself.” – Mark
04 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
03 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
Keep on rollin’, baby, you know what time it is.
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Notes:
- Live, New York City. MORE on the Subway Series. Are you seeing why I didn’t want that?
- Destiny’s Child visits and harmonizes, much like they did at the VMAs.
- Released from MTV: in pool of its viewers (18-24 years), SEVENTY-FIVE percent couldn’t identify the vice presidential candidates. This is sad, people. Let me give you a little refresher course. It’s Al Gore with Joe Lieberman on the Democratic ticket, and George W. Bush with Dick Cheney for the Republicans. Care. They both might be MAJORLY annoying, but CARE. And vote.
- It’s Friday! (Thank GOD. This week was HORRIBLE. And now I have a 3-day weekend!) Ideal Countdown day! Send them in, people, they’re fun, I swear! :) And the ultimate from last week, Britney’s farewell on the ideal countdown, is up.
Monday 10.23.2000
10 "Independent Women (Part 1)" by Destiny's Child
Requested by Derek Jeter of the Yankees… they’re up 2-0 in the Subway Series. *rolls eyes* They ALWAYS win.
09 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
His BOOK (more like the pop sensations than we thought, huh Eminem?) Angry Blond is out November 21st and “here’s the irony” (according to Ananda): that’s the release date of the new BSB album.
08 "Faded" by soulDecision
07 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
Request of the day: “Samantha, I don’t know where you’re going, but I’ll follow you anywhere, baby!”
06 "Man Overboard" by Blink-182
The beginning of this video… working up to the climax with all of the instruments… with Mark singing the backgroud “So sorry, it’s over” behind Tom is SO good. I’m amazed.
05 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
Performed live. The TRL love of tears was workin’ today.
04 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
Christmas album to be released. What is with pop stars releasing those? No, really, I don’t get it… seems like a waste of time.
03 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
Requested by Todd Zeile of the Mets.
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Requested by Robin Ventura of the Mets. Check out how confused, bewildered, and critical Kevin seems during this video (especially looking AJ singing background near the end). That is, past where he’s singing his heart out with that (annoyingly) sincere look on his face. Hehe.
Notes:
- Ananda Lewis guest hosts… “I’m just gonna go home and pass out. My day has just been way too overloaded with stars!”
- Arnold Schwarzeneggar visits… he’s funny.
- Mya visits and performs “Case of the Ex” live
- Lenny Kravitz visits: Greatest Hits album due
- More ideal countdowns are up. And, people, I don’t post email addresses so that you can send each other hatemail. Don’t assume you know everything about someone’s opinions and have grounds to be offended after simply reading comments on a TRL ideal countdown. That’s just not something to be mad about in the first place. It’s their opinions, and they don’t have to match yours.
- There were updates this weekend, so check out the cool + signs if you want.
- P.S. Angelfire sucks.
Tuesday 10.24.2000
10 "Dance With Me" by Debelah Morgan
I know that artists lip sync when filming these things, but I HATE it when it’s SO obvious like this.
09 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
“This is a guy who loves women... Eminem!” – Dave introduces the 5 seconds shown of this video.
08 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
“A frighteningly catchy song from Samantha...” – Dave’s right all over the place.
07 "Man Overboard" by Blink-182
Why is Tom sweating like no other during the live performance scene? He’s dripping.
06 "Faded" by soulDecision
This song is like the theme song for some of those guys that were thrown out.
05 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
“Nothing says holiday spirit quite like genie in a bottle.” – Dave
04 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
Replayed live performance from yesterday, but not the whole thing of course. Imagine if, when actually performing, they told her she could only sing from the middle of the first verse to the middle of a chorus? No. But that’s how they cut off the videos nevertheless.
03 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Camera techniques require talent in this video. They’re good. All those water-tank shots.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Poignant lyric of the day: “Got nothing to hide no more.” You tell ‘em Nick.
Notes:
- Dave Holmes guest hosts. “The devil’s German... I had no idea... but I suspected!”
- “Girls Rule” Day... guys are thrown out of the audience by the girls; the remaining one gets to meet Charlie’s Angels
- Hootie and the Blowfish visit: Scattered, Smothered, and Covered out today
- News: ‘N Sync video to be released... we got a sneak peak. WHAT is going on with their clothing lately?!; Choose or Lose on Felicity this week
- Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu from Charlie’s Angels visit. Gotta LOVE their matching shirts... “I won’t vote for a son of a Bush.” Choose or lose.
Wednesday 10.25.2000
10 "Original Prankster" by The Offspring f/Redman
09 "Bathwater" by No Doubt
08 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
07 "Man Overboard" by Blink-182
06 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
05 "Faded" by soulDecision
04 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
03 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
How was Melissa Joan Hart's interview with her? "I don't know... it was really quick and interesting." Hmmm...
02 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
*wipes tear* the streak ends.
01 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH! This video freaks me out. Seriously, and it’s #1!
Notes:
- Carson’s back!
- No Doubt debuts
- Fred Durst phones. Vocal chords strained, but they sold 1 million + albums
- Marilyn Manson phones; world premiere video: “Disposable Teens”
- Melissa Joan Hart visits
- News: ‘N Sync singing the national anthem at last night’s game; “This I Promise You” finally out tomorrow
Thursday 10.26.2000
10 "Bathwater" by No Doubt
“I like her better as a blonde, although I was turned on by the braces.” – Carson
09 "Dance With Me" by Debelah Morgan
08 "Faded" by soulDecision
07 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
06 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
The Rollin’ girls come out on stage with them. I’m STILL mad that this tour isn’t coming to Phoenix.
05 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
“Being around aggressive males sometimes brings out the best in me.”
04 "Man Overboard" by Blink-182
This song inspires reaction in me that surpasses even new BSB material, EVEN in the biggest of teenybopper moments (think Columbus Day). That’s big. And that’s how good this song is.
03 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
Hate to bring this up here, but what happened to Britney and “Stronger”?
02 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Lyric of the day: “You blow me off like it’s all the same.” It IS all the same, Ricky. You’re the same, the song’s the same, the sexuality is the same.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
Request of the day: “‘Cause they’re the most talented men on the countdown and I wanna marry Nick Carter!”
Notes:
- Why do they always have big Eminem news when he’s not on the countdown? NEWS: He’s had a hard time getting into Canada.
- ‘N Sync cheer contest to stay in the “‘N Sync Lounge” to watch the video, or have to go to Times Square
- World premiere ‘N Sync video: “This I Promise You”
Friday 10.27.00
09 "Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba
This was drawn first, and it starts out the women. After the four of them, the lottery countdown continues with all of the men. What a weird split.
07 "Dance With Me" by Debelah Morgan
04 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
Request of the day: “‘cause she’s so sexy and I’m gonna take her up on that offer!”
10 "Case of the Ex" by Mya
Down FIVE spots.
06 "Faded" by soulDecision
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
All of the previews for next week and the lines Carson threw out today indicate that the TRL people are really going to promote/milk the competition for #1… I’m predicting right now that it’s going to get annoying.
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Lyric of the day: “She reminds me that a woman’s got one thing on her mind.” What’s that? Dancing? ‘Cause that’s what the song’s about, right?
05 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
08 "Man Overboard" by Blink-182
Second big drop of the day: this is down four spots.
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
This song is so pretty. It’s beautiful… no, GORGEOUS. There’s a first positive comment for ya.
Notes:
- Lottery version of TRL: videos played out-of-order, as shown above, in honor of some New York lottery game
- Ray Munns co-hosts and puts in the randomly selected videos
- Sneak peek footage from Britney’s “Stronger”
- ‘N Sync debuts
- Brian McFayden with News (last “ball” drawn in the lottery)
- I’m so sorry it’s taken me all weekend to get these results up. This (Sunday afternoon) is honestly the first time I’ve been at home doing something other than sleeping since Thursday night.
- It’s Ideal Countdown day. The “ultimate” is up… Limp Bizkit ran away with this one.
- Updated stuff today (+). Plus there’s a new feature on the Video Comments section, about dancing in videos. And, you know how I rate the videos that have been retired? Now those ranks are in a nice little table, plus there’s an explanation.
Monday 10.30.2000
10 "Disposable Teens" by Marilyn Manson
I would totally appreciate this song if it weren’t for the fact that he makes the word “teens” so high in the chorus.
09 "Dance With Me" by Debelah Morgan
Debuting on TV this Wednesday on the teen soap opera Titans, “which is just a great, CLASSIC program.” - Carson
08 "Bathwater" by No Doubt
07 "Man Overboard" by Blink-182
The picture, the one that grays, of the little people, is the best part of the Adam’s Song segment. Otherwise that part’s quality is decreased by the little people pretending to perform.
06 "Faded" by soulDecision
05 "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit
TRL Hook Up: Fred Durst has worked with Snoop Dogg, Christina Aguilera, and Tom Cruise. He’s cool.
04 "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" by Christina Aguilera
She had to cancel some shows ‘cause she has tonsillitis... I’d be mad.
03 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
The two Rickys SING together (even in Lucky only ONE of them was singing). That’s freaky. Although nothing beats the hands all over him.
02 "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync
I saw the trees on the preview and I laughed. You can only imagine what happened when they added the bubbles. This video is high entertainment.
01 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
WORLD tour planned, kick off January 23rd, that includes North America, Europe, South America, Australia and Asia. How long has it been since ‘N Sync even left North America on tour? (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)
Notes:
- On the jumbo-tron thing today! Yankee celebration parade, and there are lots of people. “It certainly helps that the best band in the WORLD is here today.” – Carson
- Hilarie outside in Times Square. She wins one contest and all of the sudden she’s on now and again. How cool would that be.
- Marilyn Manson debuts
- U2 visits and performs “Beautiful Day” (God I love that song) and “New York” on the roof. All That You Can’t Leave Behind is out tomorrow.
- New ideal countdowns for Friday. And now, due to popular request, there’s a lyrics page for the videos currently on the countdown. And you can see what my favorite lines are.
- Warning: tomorrow the site will not be updated (it’s Halloween!). For the results, check out any of the pages on the links page.
