A Re-born Dream: "There is a big market for artifacts with my name on it!" - John DeLorean. Flamboyant John DeLorean, the former top General Motors executive who built the sexy 1980s DeLorean sports car with gull-wing doors, wants to get back into the car business! In order to successfully build his new dream machine, Mr. DeLorean is currently working with Burt Rutan, the man who designed an airplane that flew around the world (nonstop), and Gordon Novel, a former investigator and nightclub operator, to build 2 brand new sports-cars! The project name for one of them, is the Firestar 500, which may emerge soon, with an IROC racing engine, producing 250- to 275 stock horsepower. With that weight, the result of its acceleration (0-60) would be extremely fast, anywhere from 3.2- to 3.5 seconds, and a top speed of 220 mph. It will be a car very light in weight - about 1,450 pounds. Its styling is based on the original DeLorean, except mostly made out of structural composites. It may be one of the fastest cars in the entire world! "So,", says John Z. DeLorean, "you're really building a car now that's comparable in performances to the million-dollar McLaren or the million-dollar Porsche or the million-dollar Mercedes, except it's going to retail for less than $20,000 bucks." It is simply going to be a car designed for young people, that's going to be very stimulating and exciting! DeLorean's second car he plans on producing will be expensive - VERY expensive! It will be "ultra-high performance", says John DeLorean, "with a 1,250 horsepower engine, which is twice as much as any car on the market today. The engine will be all handmade, one piece at a time. It's not meant for broad consumption; it's meant to be very unique, very limited production - sort of an image car." It will probably be built in Italy, but John hasn't decided yet. The design, he says, is 85% done. DeLorean, like always, is extremely confident and discounts any and all criticism. Both cars are simply going to be a high-tech version of the old car, the DMC-12. The two-seat configuration and his signature gull-wing doors will probably remain, but a new, unidentified overhead cam V-8 will drive both cars well over 200 mph. I personally do believe in John DeLorean and the new sports-cars he plans on producing. Many disagree, and time will only tell. I commend him on his endurance, and wish him the best of luck!
