I've heard that trunk space is very limited, is that true?

Yes.  Unfortunately, DeLoreans were never designed to be very practical cars, so there is only about enough space for three small briefcases in the trunk. However, there is lockable "cubby box" behind the driver's seat (also very tiny) and a small flat surface behind the seats that can be used as a shelf to hold small items.
