What is the DeLorean DMC-12? The DeLorean DMC-12 is a 2 seater, rear-engined, gullwing sports coupe. Most young people will recognize it for the role it played in the movie Back to the Future, as the nuclear-powered time machine. Older people will remember the huge media interest it stirred up in the late 1970's and early 80's. The Prototype DeLorean was made at around 1977. The sleek flat lines of the stainless-steel panels, the sharply raked windscreen and the image of a "safety car" stirred up huge media interest in the project. This car was shown to prospective investors and dealers. To become an authorized DeLorean dealer, an investment of $25,000 was required. The British government invested heavily in the project, and the factory was built in Dunmurry, a suburb of Belfast, Ireland. The DeLorean has many unique features, such as unpainted, high quality (ss304) stainless steel panels. No DeLorean was ever painted at the factory, however some cars were commissioned by the factory to be painted. Red is probably the most popular color among painted DeLoreans today. The DeLorean has an X shaped backbone chassis, which is epoxy coated to prevent rust. This is bolted to a GRP underbody structure, onto which the stainless steel panels are hung. The engine is a PRV (Peugnot-Renault-Volvo)-6 2849cc (174cid) which was purchased from Renault, along with the drive-train and gearbox. It has proven to be reliable. Today however, it is underpowered. Click here to see pictures of the engine. |
