Below is a tutorial on networking devices, benefits of networking . Finally a picture map of how to put together a simple home network.

1 Networking devices

Hub is a layer 1 device and is considered dumb is a cheap way to network PC in a SOHO with under 12-15 PC. After that the rate of collisions go up and network slows down. For faster services go to a switch.

Switch or a Bridge is a layer 2 device and is superior to a hub is smart works at the level of Mac address and will allow full duplex service. A excellent way to improve speed in any network. They reduce the collision domain. Used to be called a bridge.

Router will work at layer 3 and forward traffic based upon IP address. In small networks used to connect the WAN to LAN. IN larger networks will reduce the broadcast domain. Routers add latency, which delays the transmission of data. This is caused by the process involved in routing data from one LAN to another. A router must use more of the data packet to determine destinations and route the data to the appropriate end node

VLAN Some switches come with a built in router and support VLAN's each VLAN acts as a individual network with its own IP address. Switches using VLANs create the same division of the network into separate broadcast domains but do not have the latency problems of a router. Switches are also a more cost-effective solution.
Short for virtual LAN, a network of computers that behave as if they are connected to the same wire even though they may actually be physically located on different segments of a LAN. VLANs are configured through software rather than hardware, which makes them extremely flexible. One of the biggest advantages of VLANs is that when a computer is physically moved to another location, it can stay on the same VLAN without any hardware reconfiguration. A must for companies wanting to be in the Fast Lane.

We offer a wireless networks installation from$149 (installation cost). Wireless network of 2 PC one laptop total cost starting from $ 499. includes all components and configuration costs. Above will include a integrated firewall, switch & router.  As product prices go down almost daily we can offer a lower quote. Estimates are Free.

Apache Systems will Install, deliver a fully configured Wireless network with a firewall, two wireless USB access points or PCMCIA cards for laptops, A 4 port integrated switch which can connect to a DSL or Cable modem. At a price of $ 499.99. Above system can be expanded to support more then 150 PC. we install the whole network and configure your PC. We ship ready to install systems-just plug and play.
3 Remember the word HUB  old fashioned in Networking . Only place for Hubs is airports. The price of switches has fallen so low they are sold at prices below $ 25.  The switches allow Duplex data transfer at the same time, HUBs do not allow this. Switches are resistant to collisions and HUBs  allow them. So if there is a DUMB HUB sitting in your network and your network is over 15 PC then your employees are losing a  lot of time waiting to print, connect to the internet and get their email.

Network Computers and troubleshoot problems

 Home networking
Make sure that each computer has the same "Workgroup" name:
Click: Control Panel - Network - Identification tab.

If not listed in the Configuration screen, add NetBEUI. It's explained at the bottom if you want to know what NetBEUI is.
Click: Add - Protocol - Microsoft - NetBEUI
Now for the "Properties" of NetBEUI, make sure that Client for Microsoft Networks and File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks ARE checked.

Enable "Sharing" for each drive.
On your desktop, click My Computer -
Click ONCE on the drive to be shared -
RIGHT-Click and select "Sharing" -
Check the "Shared As" box.

THE FOLLOWING PROVIDES INTERNET SECURITY:

DO NOT bind TCP/IP to file and print sharing:
Click: Control Panel - Network - Configuration tab.
For each mention of "TCP/IP":
Click "Properties".
Uncheck BOTH Client for Microsoft Networks and File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks.

CLOSE AND REBOOT.

We can trouble shoot the bottlenecks in your network.

Provide you with a wireless bridge spanning 22 miles. No monthly dues.

Carry your laptop all around the house or office no wires. Having a wireless connection saves you over one hour of time per user. As you do not have to go room to room looking for a connection. Want productivity then go wireless.

For a small home network   you will need a wireless router and for clients you will need PCMCIA wireless cards for each laptop. PCI wireless cards  or USB access points for desktops.

If you already have a network. Then to add wireless networking to it you need a wireless access point and PCMCIA cards for you laptops. USB or PCI wireless cards for desktops.

Wireless Print servers are also avaliable.
