                    Daw Khin Kyi's funeral
In December 1988, Daw Khin Kyi, the mother of Aung San Suu Kyi, passed away. About 200,000 people gathered at her funeral. The SLORC was expecting that the student activists would exploit the funeral in order to stage a protest but Aung San Suu Kyi told people and students to remain calm and orderly.

The military trucks appeared on Prome Road while people followed Daw Khin Kyi's coffin. Students and people were angry. One recalled, "That was just after massacre, so people were so hurt, sad and resentful that they did not even want to look at soldiers."

At that time, Min Ko Naing suddenly appeared in the middle of the crowd. He appealed the troops to let the people to pay their last tribute to Daw Khin Kyi. Finally, the troops withdrew.

Min Ko Naing maintained a communication channel with Aung San Suu Kyi and backed the NLD's activities.

First anniversary of Phone Maw's death 13 March 1989, That day marked the first anniversary of the killing of a student martyr in March 1988. Min Ko Naing was the speaker at the ceremony held in RIT campus, while Leaders from various political organizations including Aung San Suu Kyi and former Prime Minister U Nu also attended Min Ko Naing's speech was applauded by the people as it was a simple statement by a student leader who had no political ambitions. He was only concerned about the people of Burma.
