If we were following the ways
of nature, all kittens would learn to hunt from their mothers before
they left the den. Kittens would begin by killing half-dead mice and
other small mammals that the mother brought back for them.
You know, and I know, that this doesn't happen very often anymore.
Kittens are born in houses and the mother cats show them the way to
the food bowl. Period. This is probably the way you were raised. I
know it is the way I was raised. I had to teach myself how to
hunt.
The best way to learn is to start by hunting insects. Even human
houses have a tendency to have insects in them every now and then.
There are millions of insects outside in the summer.
Insects aren't very tasty, but they are fun to chase !
Some insects fly around, giving you good practice at catching flying
things. Most insects are harmless. Some of them sting and some of
them bite, but most of them won't hurt you as long as you don't
actually eat them. I don't recommend eating insects because they can
make you toss up.
Spiders are not actually insects, and all spiders can bite. I have
heard of kitties who become experts at hunting spiders, and even at
eating them, but I recommend that you leave spiders alone. There is
so little meat on one that it is not worth the danger of the
hunt.
