Students performing in the solo piano event participate in one of nineteen classifications ranging from Primary Class I to Musically Advanced II. Students play two works from memory - one required piece and one choice piece. The required piece is chosen from an approved list of works by American composers, many of whom are still alive. The choice piece must come from the Baroque, Classic, or Romantic period and be appropriate to the level of the participant. Hymns, simplifications, and arrangements are not allowed.
Students participating in the piano concerto event play a memorized single movement from a concerto from a specified list. The designated concertos span all periods and levels of difficulty. There are five classifications of participation within the concerto event.
Theory exams are also available for NFMC Jr. Festival participants and are offered in twelve progressively more challenging levels.
We are very fortunate to have a local NFMC chapter and Jr. Festival in Grand Rapids. Participation in this worthwhile event has never been easier for our area music students.
The National Federation of Music Clubs was organized to promote the study of 20th century American composers. Chapters of NFMC exist nationally and host Junior Festivals annually. Interested piano students may participate in this Festival which involves playing individually before a single judge. Students then receive a written critique, ranking, and certificate of participation. Because the Jr. Festival is not a contest, students do not compete with one another, but strive only to do their individual best.
