Some brief thoughts on piano care and maintenance ...

Avoid placing your piano in a basement, porch, against any exterior wall, or near a heating unit or duct. During the heating season, it is important to maintain a proper humidity level in your home to protect your investment in your piano. This becomes particularly important if you heat with wood. A piano which is subjected to a very dry environment may require more frequent tunings or suffer serious deterioration of the wooden structure. Most tuner/technicians agree a 40% humidity level in the home is ideal. Alternately, you can purchase a climate control unit for your piano.

Pianos should be checked at least twice a year by a qualified tuner and tuned as necessary. The cost of tuning alone generally ranges from $50-$75, assuming no other repair is necessary.
