Picking
a deck can be a hard decision for the newbie and even for the professional.
They aren't that cheap, and it's easy to pick one that's pretty but then
doesn't match with any of the books that you buy.
I have put
in this section all of the decks that I think are helpful to the beginner
reader and put a little review by it so you can get a better idea of which
one to buy.
Ideally,
you should have several decks. However the basic essentials are two.
One for your own readings and one for reading for other people.
When I started
I used one deck for everything, and although this is ok at the very beginning
it is better to get another one if you are going to read for other people.
If you use the one deck for everything the readings will get confused and
you will find someone elses cards coming up in readings for yourself and
your cards coming up for people in their readings. This does get
annoying and it is much easier to be inaccurate this way so I recommend
getting at least another deck for reading for other people.
After you
get a new deck you need to 'break it in'. Your readings will not
be accurate at first so don't be scared to jump right in there and shuffle,
shuffle away. It takes a lot of shuffling and laying to get the deck
warmed up.
There are
some rituals written about breaking in the decks, but I prefer just to
shuffle and think about what I am going to use the deck for. Either
myself or others. If your deck is for reading for others be careful
not to 'personalise' it too much by over shuffling. Check out my
tips page for more clues like
this.
I have also
found that there are good books on the Tarot and bad books on the Tarot.
For the beginner this is confusing as well so I also have a section on
here on books that I think are helpful to the beginner and also some books
that are good for the more advanced reader that include more complicated
ways of understanding the Tarot.
