He takes fatal OD as Internet pals watch... Kennedy, Helen. “He takes fatal OD as Internet pals watch.” New York Daily News. February 1, 2003

“I told u I was hardcore.”

Those were the last coherent words Brandon Vedas, 21, typed into the computer in his Phoenix bedroom as he showed off for Internet pals watching on a Web cam by swallowing more and more prescription drugs.

Vedas died online as a crowd of virtual onlookers egged him to “eat more!” A chilling record of the Jan. 12 chat reads like an Internet version of the notorious 1964 Kew Gardens, Queens, stabbing of Kitty Genovese as her neighbors watched from their windows.

In Vedas' case, some did try to help — begging him to stop, to call 911, to get his mother from the next room. After he passed out, some tried frantically to figure out his location while others argued against getting involved.

Sappenfield, Mark. “In one US city, life under a UN treaty on women.” Christian Science Monitor. January 30, 2003. When San Francisco adopted the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women in 1998, it put a unique twist on the issue of women's rights in America. Twenty-three years after President Carter signed CEDAW, the US Senate has not passed it. Indeed, San Francisco remains the only city or state that has codified the treaty into law.

America Sucks It Up

If our personal experience is anything to go by, this is a bad emotional misreading. Yesterday's news did not spark “unsettled feelings“; it revived old familiar ones. Anyone over 25 is old enough to remember the Challenger explosion, which did spark “unsettled feelings.“ It did so, though, because it was a new experience. Like Sept. 11, it took time to sink in; only with the passage of time did we “know“ how to feel about it. In contrast, yesterday's disaster, while intensely sad, was not traumatic--except of course for those whose loved ones died or who suffered some other direct loss.

Purdum, Todd S. “Disaster Stirs Already Unsettled Feelings Across the Country.” The New York Times. February 2, 2003.

The Price of Appeasement

A priceless artifact was lost when the Columbia broke up: a pencil drawing that Israeli mission specialist Ilan Ramon had brought along. Titled “Moon Landing“ (and shown alongside), it depicted the Earth seen from the moon, as imagined by a young visionary named Peter Ginz some six decades ago. The Nazis murdered Peter Ginz at Auschwitz in 1944. (Ramon's mother was also an Auschwitz inmate, but she survived.)

Peter was 14, so if he had lived, he would be about 10 years younger than John Glenn. Who knows--if the West had stopped Hitler earlier, Peter Ginz just might have grown up to become an astronaut.
