“Anne, your dance was fabulous! It was if Nick was on stage with you!! You made it seem that real.” Melissa said as we stood at our car in my driveway.
“Thanks. It was a weird performance in its own sort of way.” I tried to smile. The whole thing was still bugging me. Maybe I went wacko for those few minutes!
“Well, I gotta get home. Logan wants us to something. Oh! How are you and Nick doing?” She suddenly asked.
The questioned startled me and I looked up at her. “I don’t know. We haven’t talked since then.”
“Oh….well, I’ll see you Monday, okay?”
“Sure thing. Bye.” I waved as she backed out of the driveway and left. It was now close to one o’clock in the morning. “Her and Logan sure do things a little late.” I muttered. I made my way up to my front door and slowly succeeded in unlocking it.
A blonde head appeared on the couch. It was illuminated by the nearby lamp.
“Nick?” I questioned. Sure I was happy he was here, but I was also mad.
“Hey Anne.” Was his lazy reply. I watched as he continued reading his magazine. I walked into the kitchen to grab me a coke. This was going to be a long night.
“Good magazine?” I asked sitting down beside him.
“Yupe!”
We sat in silence for a good five minutes, unsure of what to say.
“Listen Nick, I really wish…..” I started.
“You wish what?” he yelled slamming his magazine closed.
“Never mind. Forgive me that I spoke!” I spat at him.
“Do you know what its like to have my life? No! Never able to choose what you want to do? Always have to go to this photo shoot, have a concert for multiple nights in a row and travel for hours on end!” Nick ranted facing directly at me.
“Okay….I….”
“I don’t think you’re life is not as important as mine, its just at times I can’t make it to everything. You should know that by now. I can’t just drop everything and come running. I have more people I can let down and more responsibilities.”
“More responsibilities? That is a bunch of bull crap! I have plenty! They just aren’t the same as yours. My life can be just as stressful and overbearing as yours!” I yelled annoyed by how blind he could be at times.
“Come an Anne! A job like mine has so much more to worry about than a normal life.” Nick continued to point out.
“Really?”
“Yes!”
“Fine then! If you think my life offers so little to you…..why do you worry about it? Why waste your time pointing out. You know you’re right! I guess even though you say my life matters, it really doesn’t!” I choked out trying to hold my tears back.
“Anne, please don’t!” Nick begged when se saw the tears. He hated it when I cried, especially when he made me.
“Don’t ‘Anne’ me! I’m fine! I don’t think you understand something! You had promise me that you’d come! You didn’t! My heart wanted you there so bad! I only danced to your solo because you wanted me to! I was going to perform it for you and no one else there. Do you get that Nick? For you and only you!”
He stood there trying to take in my words.
“Also, I have no clue how it happened, but you appeared on stage with me dancing! I really thought you were up there with me. My heart wanted you there to see it that bad!” I cried as I looked down at the coke can I was still holding.
“But it was just one dance!” Nick said still not grasping the point.
“You sure are dumb at times aren’t you?” I yelled unable to stop myself.
“Excuse me?” He gasped surprised at my outburst.
“I’m sorry I don’t do concert after concert which makes each one so meaning less. This meant a lot to me and now you make it sound like nothing. Thanks a lot!” I screamed and ran to my bedroom, slamming the door behind me. I flung my body on my bed and cried. My hand reached out to my bedside table for my CD player remote. Slowly I clicked it to number eight on the Black and Blue CD. It was louder than I wanted it to be, but at the moment I didn’t care. Maybe it might let me drown in the beauty of the song.
Nick sat back on the couch confused by what had just happened. Did one performance really mean that mush to Anne? Why? He was sure she could get a video and then he’d watch it. What did she mean buy he had been on stage with her? That was completely impossible!
Suddenly heard some very familiar music. It was one of their songs, “More Than That”. Anne loved that song, but why? It was about someone who had been hurt and a guy is promising her he will loved her more than that other guy. Also that when he says something he means it.
“Wait!” Nick exclaimed to himself jumping up. “Anne was hurt by some other guy a long time ago. All she wants is for us to love each other more than we’re ever loved anyone else. She wants is to keep our promises, which I didn’t do tonight! I couldn’t help it!”
Quickly Nick made his way up to Anne’s room. Hesitantly he knocked on the door. There wasn’t any noise beside the music, so he opened the door slightly. She was asleep. Nick walked over to the bed and laid down next to her. He tried pulling her in his arms, but she rolled away. Very disheartened, Nick left and tried to sleep in the guest room.
The next morning I woke up ill. The previous night had been very enjoyable. I almost wish Nick hadn’t come to spare me the pain from our argument.
We were both making our way around the kitchen, fixing our breakfast. Neither said a word, even as we sat at the table munching away. All I wanted to do was to reach out and hold him, but I could see in his eyes that he didn’t want that. Yet, he didn’t look as mad as the night before.
“Well, I gotta go catch my plane.” Nick sighed.
“Okay, I’ll see you soon.” I slightly smiled. Who knew how our next meeting would go!
“Yeah, I’ll see you backstage before the concert. Bye Anne.” Nick said emotionless as he placed a quick kiss on my lips.
“Bye,” I whispered watching him leave. The kiss had been out of habit, not love.
“Melissa, I don’t know what to do!” I scream over the phone. “We’re drifting apart! I don’t want to loose him. That would literally break more than just my heart!”
“I’m sure Nick feels the same way, just doesn’t know how to act at the moment.” Melissa tried to reason.
“It hurts so bad!”
“I’m sure it does. Only time will tell. Just be open to him next time he makes any advance to amend your argument. Okay?”
“Sure. You know what is really scary for me.” I said holding back my stressful tears.
“What?!”
“When I danced onstage at the Miss Teen pageant, I could have promised that Nick was there with me. But when I turned to take my bow, he wasn’t!”
“What now? That is really strange! But what makes it so scary?” Melissa questioned slightly confused.
“I’m scared that, that’s how it’s going to be in real life.” I stated.
