The Call

She couldn’t believe he was standing so close to her that she felt she couldn’t even breathe without disturbing what was about to happen. He smoothly reached down and his lips gently pressed against hers. She kissed back. Slowly he pulled away. He put his arms around her and held her close. They didn’t speak they just held each other in peaceful love. Eventually they pulled away and walked hand in hand back to the back porch.

“Nick. Don’t worry. It’ll be okay.” Lee comforted. “It’s our fault really. We should have let them see each other.”

“They’re just stupid kids,” Nick raved. “What do they know about love?”

“Nothing, but Nick, if they are going to get that upset over not seeing each other then we should have let them.”

“They’re just kids. They’ll get tired of each other soon.”

“I don’t know Nick. I’m not sure you give them enough credit.”

“I think I know my brother better than you do.”

“I think I know my sister better than you do.”

They glared at each other for a minute.

“Let’s just watch the movie,” Lee sighed and settled on the couch.

***

“Brittney!” Aaron exclaimed. “I have an idea.”

“What?” Brittney asked.

“I think we need to play a different kind of poker.”

“Huh?”

“It’s called strip poker.”

“And?”

“And you bet your clothes!”

“Aaron!” Brittney cried. “I’m ashamed of you. First you try to get me to go skinny-dipping, then you try to get me in your bedroom, then you try to get me to play strip poker with you. That’s just shameful. I’m quite ashamed of you.”

“You went into my bed room willingly,” Aaron pointed out.

“Uh, uh!” Brittney protested shaking her head.

“You did. Brittney, you ho, I’m quite ashamed of you.”

“Hey, you’re not much better. You’re the one using the ho.”

“Now wait a minute!”

“What! It’s what you said!”

“Oh, shut-up!”

“I’ll talk if I want to.”

“Not if I say you can’t.”

“You can’t tell me what to do.”

“Yes I can.”

“No, you can’t.”

“I can!”

“Let’s not argue about whether or not you can tell me what to do because we both know that you can’t.”

“I can tell you, but you don’t have to listen to me.”

“Alright. I won’t listen to you.”

Ashley opened the door, “Brittney, we have to leave.”

“Okay,” Brittney sighed.

Ashley walked back inside to Nick to tell him good-bye. “Don’t do anything to Aaron,” she pleaded.

“If it means that much to you then I won’t.” He sighed.

“Thank you.” As stood looking at each other she all of a sudden reached over and gave him a hug.

“Wooooo!” Aaron called.

They slowly let go of each other and said their good-byes. They walked out to the car and rode in silence for several minutes each thinking about what had happened that night.

“Did you have fun out there in the dark alone with Aaron?” Ashley teased.

“Yea,” Brittney blushed.

“OF course you didn’t kiss, so why did you have such a good time?” She continued.

“What do you mean ‘of course’ we didn’t kiss?”

“You’re too young to kiss.”

“You’d better be thankful to Ashley,” Nick exclaimed to Aaron as he watched Aaron walk up the stairs to his room.

“Why?” Aaron questioned turning around.

“I wanted to send you home. You’re too much trouble, but she convinced me not to.”

“Well, then, I am thankful to her.” Aaron exclaimed as he ran on up the stairs.

“Have you forgiven me yet?” Lee questioned.

“Yea. I have,” Brittney replied.

“Now that you’ve gotten revenge I hope you have!” Lee cried.

“I enjoyed getting revenge,” Brittney laughed.

“Well, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Nick was quite mad at you.”

“I know,” Brittney smiled thinking of what happened after Nick chased them out of that anger.

“What did you enjoy more doing it, or being chased after it?”

“I don’t know,” Brittney sighed.

Lee laughed. “I don’t think you should try to embarrass us anymore or Nick is going to send Aaron home.”

“Really?” Brittney asked wide-eyed.

“I think so. He wanted to send him home this time, but I convinced him not to.”

“Well, thanks.”

“You’d miss him wouldn’t you?”

“Yea.”

“It’s not like you ever do anything other than play cards.”

“What do you mean?”

“All you do is play cards.”

“No it isn’t!” Brittney defended. “We do other stuff too.”

“Like what?”

“Like stuff.”

“Like what?”

“Like stuff.”

"Okay, as long as you aren’t kissing.”

“Would it be bad if we had kissed?”

“Have you?”

Brittney didn’t answer that question. “Would it be bad?”

“Have you? You have haven’t you?”

Brittney only nodded.

“When? Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Today. I was going to.”

“You kissed Aaron,” Lee said slowly trying to let it soak in. “I haven’t even kissed Nick yet and you’re kissing Aaron!”

“You haven’t kissed Nick?”

“No. I don’t like kissing people soon. We aren’t even going out yet.”

“Was it bad of me?”

“No. It was fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. It was perfectly all right.”

***

“Did you know Brittney and Aaron kissed Friday night?” Ashley asked Nick Wednesday when they were talking on the phone.

“What?” Nick exclaimed. “Aaron kissed a girl who isn’t even his girlfriend? I just won’t accept that.”

“Nick, ” Ashley broke in.

“No, Lee, don’t try to change my mind. I’m sending him home. That is the last straw, I just can’t accept my 13 year old brother kissing a girl he hardly knows and isn’t even going out with…”

“But…” Lee protested.

“Don’t but me! He has to go home. I have to separate them I don’t think this relationship is very healthy. They seem to be becoming dependent on each other and they aren’t even going out and I don’t like that. Aaron needs to learn to make a commitment to a girl before he goes around kissing her…”

“Nick!”

“No, Ashley, I want to explain to you what I am doing calmly and rationally before I do it, so you understand and doing get mad at me.”

“Nick! Listen to me!”

“Let me explain!”

“They are going out!”

“What do you mean they are going out?”

“They are going out. What do you not comprehend about that?”

“Why didn’t anybody tell me?” Nick demanded.

“I thought Aaron would have told you.”

“Well, he didn’t. Why didn’t you?”

“I thought he would!”

“I should send him home for that!”

“Why?”

“Because. He should tell me those kinds of things. That makes everything a little clearer.”

“Probably.”

“When did they kiss?” Nick asked.

“I think after you chased them.”

“It was quite dark then.”

“Romantic huh?”

“Maybe for them. I was mad!”

“You frequently are,” Lee mumbled.

“Aaron just keeps getting on my nerves. He keeps messing things up.”

“He hasn’t messed anything up that I can see,” Lee soothed.

“He hasn’t?”

“No.”

“Okay…” Nick replied slowly thinking about what a great girl he was talking to.

“Sorry, Nick, I have to go to ballet.”

“You do? Right now?”

“I’m going to be late as it is.”

“Oh. Alright.”

And they got off the phone. When he hung up he remembered he had something to do. He had to go chew out his pesky little brother for never telling him anything. He walked back down the stairs to the kitchen were Aaron wasn’t. He stepped out the back door. No luck. He stopped to think and as he did he heard music. It was Aaron’s song. The basement! He found him down in the basement practicing. “Aaron Carter!” Nick bellowed. “I am your older brother, you are suppose to tell me things, not just leave me to hear them from my girlfriend. I have half a mind to send you home right now for all of this. You know Mom would love it. The only reason I’m not is because Ashley said you hadn’t messed anything up, like I thought you had.

“What?” Aaron asked confused.

“Lee told me that you and Brittney are going out. Why didn’t you tell me that?”

“You never told me that you and Lee were, so I never told you about me and Brittney.” Aaron shrugged.

“But I’m not going out with her!” Nick cried.

“That’s strange,” Aaron commented. “Why not?”

“I don’t know! We just aren’t okay? It just never seemed like the right time to ask her out and besides when you get older you’ll understand better that when you commit yourself to gong out with someone when you’re famous, everything changes. It’s not a normal relationship anymore. You have to completely trust them because it’s like you have a spot light on your relationship.”

“If the pubic knows,” Aaron pointed out.

“They find out eventually.”

“Always?”

“No, not always. You especially shouldn’t let the public know. You’re so young and subject to change and subject to adoration.”

“What do you mean?” Aaron demanded.

“That you’re more likely to change your mind quickly than I am, and that there are all these little girls your age that love you. All the girls that love me know I’m too old for them, but you’re not.”

“I’m not that young!”

“Well, you’re yond and popular with all the younger girls. They want to be able to think that you are theirs.”

“But I’m not.”

“Still. If they wan to think that, let them.”

“I wasn’t planning on telling anybody.”

“Good. Now are you planning on telling me that you have kissed her?”

“Yea. Sure. We kissed on Friday night after you chased us.”

“Thank you for telling me.”

“You’re welcome. Now leave I have to practice.”

“Fine! As long as you keep me posted on everything and stop embarrassing me!”

“Okay, okay, okay. I’d rather stay here than go home.”

Nick walked up the stairs and Aaron turned the music back on. He sang for a little while until the phone rang. “Aaron. It’s your girlfriend, pick up the phone!” Nick called.

Aaron picked up the phone in the basement. “Hey,” he smiled.

“Hi,” Brittney giggled.

“Hey. I was practicing my songs a little.” Aaron told her. “I’m going to put you on speaker phone so you can hear me, if you want to.”

“Yea! Sure!” Brittney replied.

Aaron did and then started singing what would soon become Brittney’s favorite to her. He sang, “I want Candy.” After he finished she didn’t say anything for a minute.

“That was wonderful,” she breathed. “You have an excellent voice.”

“Thanks. I don’t know whether I sing better for hundred of girls that love me or just one.” Aaron laughed.

“Does it feel weird to have all those girls in love with you?”

***

Lee was very happy to be seeing Nick again that Friday night, but she was very disappointed they he hadn’t called her the night before. She assumed he’s been working late and she knew she had to understand that.

Brittney was smiling brilliantly thinking about Aaron signing his song to her. Lee glanced over at her. “What are you thinking about?”

“When I called Aaron on Wednesday he was practicing,” Brittney replied,” and he sang one of his songs to me.”

“What song?”

“It’s called ‘I want Candy’.”

“Oh. Okay.”

“What were you thinking about?” Brittney questioned.

“Oh. I was just thinking about the fact that I didn’t’ talk to Nick yesterday.”

“OH. NO!” Brittney mocked. “The world is coming to an end! You didn’t talk to Nick!”

“Shut-up!”

“Well, ya’ll are like in separable.”

“We hardly see each other!” Lee defended.

“But you talk on the phone in your every spare minute.”

“I guess we do talk on the phone a lot.”

***

“I’m hungry!” Nick exclaimed. “Let’s go find something to eat.”

“Okay!” Lee exclaimed.

He hopped up off the couch and pulled her up with him. They went into the kitchen. “I wonder if we still have moose tracks ice cream left, or if Aaron ate it all up. Darn! Aaron ate it! Ugh. I wonder what else we have. Oh. Speaking of Aaron I asked him if he was going to tell me that they were going to tell me that they were going out and he said he hadn’t because I hadn’t told him we were.”

“Did he tell you they kissed?”

“After I asked.” Nick replied searching the pantry for something he thought looked good. “They are moving so much faster than we are.”

“Yea.”

They didn’t say anything for a minute. Nick continued looking for something to eat and Ashley leaned up against the counter. Nick finally sighed and looked at her. “You bored? I’m sorry.” He turned towards her.

“That’s fine. I’m having a lot more fun here than I would anywhere else.”

“I have more fun when you’re here than any other time.”

They looked at each other for a few minutes and then he leaned down to kiss her.

“I’m hungry!” Aaron exclaimed as he stood up. “Let’s go find something to eat.”

“Okay.” Brittney shrugged standing up.

“I bet Nick ate all the moose tracks ice cream. Ugh!”

“I know those guys eating all the food!” Brittney complained.

“I don’t eat that much.”

“I suppose not.”

“I don’t!”

“I was just teasing,” Brittney laughed grabbing her boyfriend’s hand.

Nick pulled away. They looked at each other again and then he kissed her again. He put is arms around her and deepened the kiss.

Aaron opened the door to the kitchen and they booth walked in. “I don’t think you ought to tease me like that!” Aaron laughed. “I’ll have to get you back for that one.”

“You can’t…punish…me…” Brittney slowed down as she saw Nick and Lee kissing. Aaron stopped also. They both turned around at the same time towards each other. Since they were holding hands they ran into each other and fell down.

Nick and Ashley finally realized their younger siblings were o the floor, so they slowly stopped kissing. “What are you doing?” Nick demanded.

“We were coming to get something to eat,” Aaron laughed, “and we saw you having a make out session so we turned around to leave and ran into each other.”

“Well, leave.” Nick demanded.

“Let me get some chips first.”

“Fine! Just leave!”

“Okay!” Aaron pulled himself up off the floor and got the chips and some cokes. They both left quietly respecting their elder’s moment that they had ruined.

“Where were we?” Nick asked turning back towards her. He leaned down and began kissing her passionately again.

“No, Nick, stop.” Ashley pleaded.

“But…”

“We’re not even going out. We don’t need to kiss anymore.”

“Okay, will you go out with me?”

“Yes.”

“Aright,” he leaned back in to kiss again.

“That’s not what I meant.”

Aaron led Brittney down to the basement. “I have to punish you.”

“What?” Brittney asked. “What are you going to do to m?”

“Punish you for teasing me.” They walked down the basement steps. “It’s dark down here. Oh well.”

“What?”

“I have to turn the lights on. I can’t punish you in the dark.” Aaron turned on the lights and walked over to the equipment on the wall. “I’m going to sing to you.” Aaron said as he turned the music on.

“No!” Brittney covered her ears. “Don’t sing. Anything but that. You have an awful voice. I don’t want to hear you sing.”

“I have to. You need to be punished. What song don’t you want to hear?”

“Anything but ‘I want Candy’. I hate that song!”

He started singing “I want Candy.” She squealed and screamed and protested. When he finished he came over to her and took er hands off her ears.

“Are you done?” Brittney cried. “Oh! Please don’t ever do that to me again. That’s just mean and cruel punishing me like that.”

“I won’t do it again – tonight!”

“Uh!” She shoved him.

“Don’t touch me girl!” He said brushing himself off.

“I can do what ever I want to thank you every much,” Brittney defied.

“Just don’t touch me. You don’t deserve to touch me. I’m famous.” Aaron bragged.

“You’re a stuck up brat!”

Aaron slightly pushed her shoulder. “Don’t call me that. I could sue you for that!”

“Just try!”

“I could just kick you out of my house!”

“It’s not your house, jerk.” She shoved him again. “It’s your brothers.”

“Shut-up!” He shoved her back.

“Don’t shove me.” She cried shoving him.

They shoved each other for several minutes until he accidentally shoved her down.

“Oh my gosh!” Aaron exclaimed. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to. You look like you’re about to cry. Please don’t cry.”

She started shaking as she covered her face.

“Please don’t.”

“I’m laughing,” she managed to breath.

“So you’re not hurt?’

“No. Stop worrying.”

“I can’t help it. I’m supposed to worry about you. I fell bad for knocking you down.

“Don’t worry, Aaron, I’m not hurt.”

“You’re positive? Everything moves?”

“Aaron! I’m not that fragile!”

“Okay, okay!” He smiled at her and leaned down to kiss her.

“Brittney!” Ashley called from the top of the stairs. “Time to go.”

Aaron quickly kissed her cheek then extended his hand to help her up. They walked up the stairs silently together. “Bye, Aaron,” Brittney sighed.

“Bye.”

Nick and Lee said their good bye’s and the girls got in the car. Aaron just stood around in the living room not really doing anything for a minute.

“What are you doing?” Nick asked.

“Nothing.” Aaron replied.

“Well do something.”

“I don’t have anything to do.”

“Go upstairs and … write in your diary or something.”

“What? Write in my diary? I don’t’ have a diary!”

“No diary?” Nick questioned. “What’s wrong with you. You’re an abnormal guy.”

“Oh, shut-up!”

“You leave and I’ll shut up.”

“Okay! I’ll leave!” Aaron ran up to his room, but did not write in the diary he did not have.
