"Lee," Nick said, "the rest of the guys and their wives and girlfriends are getting together at AJ's Friday. Sometimes, you know, I get kinda tired of being the only or one of the only since guys. I want you to come with me. It doesn't mean anything like we're going out or anything." He added quickly scared she wouldn't come if it made her his girlfriend.
"I had better make sure it's okay with my parents, but I'd love to," she said looking up at him.
"Good. I want to introduce you to the rest of the guys. I suppose though, if you can't go I'll have to take Ashley Smith."
"I don't think all the rest of the girls would like it if you brought her," Lee smiled. "Not if she was doing her usual - making plays at every decent looking guy in sight."
"Does she really?"
"Pretty much."
"Even one's with girlfriends?"
"She makes plays at her best friends boyfriends."
"Really?"
"Yea. She is such a slut."
"Obviously."
"Look at the stars. Aren't they so pretty."
"Not as pretty as you."
"You're too nice." Lee blushed.
"I try."
"To be nice?"
"Most of the time."
"What about the rest of the time?" She asked.
"Oh, then, I'm just mean." He laughed, "I don't care then."
"When are you just mean Nick?" She giggled. "That's so awful of you."
"Just some of the time. But don't worry. I'll never be mean to you."
"Sure," she said sarcastically.
"I won't."
"I bet you're mean to Aaron."
"Not usually."
"And pretty soon you'll start being mean to me too."
"No, I won't."
"I'll never break your heart," he started singing quietly. "I'll never make you cry...I'd rather die...than live without you..."
"I can't," Aaron whispered backing up. "You don't need your first kiss to be over something stupid like this. Your first kiss needs to be with someone you love."
Brittney let out the breath she had been holding and started breathing it normal again. "We'd better go back," She whispered.
"Yea. It's getting late," Aaron replied.
They walked in silence for a few minutes each thinking about what had almost happened. Brittney decided that you really shouldn't judge a person the first time you meet them, and Aaron realized that even if somebody is crazy about you as a fan, they can still be a cool person.
"Brittney," Aaron said, "I have a concert on Friday night that's going to be on Disney-live."
"Yea. I've heard about that," Brittney smiled.
"Are you going to watch it?"
"Some of my friends and I are getting together to watch it."
"Have you told any of your friends that you know me?"
"I told them I met you last week-end."
"Did you tell them about Ashley and Nick. He says they aren't going out."
"No. Ashley told me not to tell."
"Good."
"Is it okay that I told them that I'd met you?" she asked innocently opening her eyes wide looking up at him.
"No. You were a very bad girl--I'm just joking. It was fine."
"Are you sure it was okay?"
"Yea. People meet me all the time. Other stuff is different. If I had a girlfriend that went around telling everybody we went out before I was ready to tell the press, I would not be happy."
"I wouldn't do that. -- I'm not your girlfriend."
"Yea, so I'll be even more mad at you if you tell everybody that you are."
"That would be fun. I'll have to try that someday."
"Making me mad at you?"
"No! Telling everybody I'm your girlfriend even though I'm not."
"But then you would make me mad at you. Would that be fun?"
"I don't know. You might be even more cute when you're mad."
Aaron just gave her a look.
Nick and Ashley wandered toward the house. "Oh Nick," Ashley sighed. "It's so pretty out here."
"I know. I love night time." Nick replied.
"So do I. I wish it could be like this all the time."
"That involves me being there doesn't it?"
"Yes. It does. It just wouldn't be the same without you."
"Nothing would be the same without you."
Ashley could only blush into the darkness.
They walked together quietly, peacefully enjoying being together and enjoying the night. Slowly Nick reached down and took Lee's hand in his. Now they walked hand in hand up to the house.
"Can you feel the love tonight..." Aaron sang quietly to Brittney as they watched their older siblings walking together.
"Oh my gosh Nick!" Lee exclaimed jumping off the couch and out of Nick's arms.
"What?" He asked bewildered.
"It's 10:45 and I have to be home at 11!"
"Aaron!" Nick called. "Brittney."
"Where are they?"
"On the porch."
Ashley ran to the back porch. "Britt. We've got to go now!"
"Let us finish this game." Brittney begged.
"Brittney!" Lee exclaimed. "We're going to be late as it is."
"What time is it?" Brittney questioned.
"10:45."
"Oh goodness! We'll just say I won. Bye-Aaron." She said as she followed Lee running through the house to get to the car.
"Bye Nick!" Lee exclaimed as she hopped in the car.
They drove (quickly) in silence for a little while.
"Did you have fun, Lee?" Brittney teased. "We saw you and Nick walking inside together holding hands."
"Okay. It's not like you saw us making out or anything." Lee replied worried about getting in trouble for being home so late.
"Did you make out with him?" Brittney asked appalled.
"No! I was just saying that holding hands isn't a big deal."
"It is when you never have before."
"Well, someday Brittney, a very special guy will come along. When you're with him it will give you a wonderful felling and everytime you though or hug or kiss you will know how special he is. Not that that will happen to you anytime soon...
"Is that how you feel when you're with Nick?" Brittney asked.
"Yea."
"That's how I feel with Aaron." Brittney whispered.
"Stop pretending you understand kid!" Lee chided laughing.
Brittney didn't say anything, but sat there thinking. Some they drove up to their house.
"I hope we're not in trouble." Lee mumbled as they walked in the house at 11:10.
