In preparation for the opening of the Downsview extension on the Spadina line at the end of March, 1996, new destination signs were installed in all subway trains. A new DOWNSVIEW reading was added, but many former destinations such as KEELE were dropped. Also, the VIA DOWNTOWN suffix that was part of most destinations on the Yonge-University-Spadina line disappeared. Looking to the future, terminals on the Sheppard subway were included. Unfortunately, the newer mylar signs are so thin that the lights behind the curtain are more prominent that the words they illuminate, especially on the [now retired] older H-1 cars.
The Futura Medium type face, which the Toronto Transit Commission adopted when the Yonge subway was opened in 1954, was used on the older sign. The lettering on the newer sign is done in Helvetica Condensed Black.
