August 20, 2000 - Sunday
Today was expensive, but I hope worth it! I bought my plane tickets for next month
and
my new VCR. Hurray. I did a lot I think.
I got up today at 10:30 which I'm sure you'll agree, is quite early for me on a Sunday.
I did laundry and then headed off. On my way down the hill I saw one of my students,
and we waved. Unfortunately there was also a man being loaded into an ambulance
on the hill. I'm not sure what was up...I didn't stop to ask.
I went to the train station and managed to get my tickets. I was a bit worried that
I'd have some trouble, but I got it sorted out. It was pretty easy.
On my way home I stopped at a coffee shop that I've always wondered about. I had
dry curry pilaf. It was pretty good.
After that I went to the store to buy my VCR. It was the floor model, which might
account for the lower price. The lady cleaned it off, and boxed it up for me. She
also showed me the pages in the manual for hooking it up. Then, she wrapped the
box up and made some handles for it. I had been afraid of carrying it home, I picked one from
a store that was reasonably close because of that, but it was a piece of cake! I
took it home and dumped it in my living room, then headed off again.
I had decided to go to see a movie so I walked up the hill to the train station.
I discovered that it wasn't as bad a climb as I had thought. I think the difference
this time was I was walking at my pace and not someone else's. Makes a difference.
I caught a train, I thought I'd miss it, but somehow I made it. At the mall I checked out
the times and thought I might see The Perfect Storm if I remembered to come back
to the theatre in time. I wandered around the mall. I couldn't find any English
magazines that I wanted, there was a book or two, but I was feeling poor, so I passed. Then,
I headed into HMV. Oh dear. In the World Music section I found the cd by Tarkan
with the "Kiss-kiss" song, and then I was browsing and noticed that they had Vavoom
by The Brian Setzer Orchestra set up for listening. I listened for a few minutes and
I knew, the cd was mine. It sounded great. I hope it sounds as good on my stereo!
I never did go to the movie, I bought groceries and headed home. At home I decided
to set up my VCR. It took a while and a lot of swearing before I got it set up.
It works pretty well I think, but I'll wait until tomorrow morning before I know
if it's set up properly.
I got a couple of calls today. One was from Pamella making arrangements to meet tomorrow.
She's bringing a crowd of people to Otaru tomorrow afternoon and I'll meet them.
We're going to go to some of the places that I haven't been yet, museums, glass
shops, that kind of thing. I also meet my Japanese teacher tomorrow. I'm not sure if
I'll start my lessons tomorrow or not. I've been here so long, and NOW I start learning
Japanese? Yep. Just naturally slow I guess!
That's it for tonight. A busy day. I'm quite tired...just hope it cools down somewhat
tonight.
