The club was formed in 1958 as
"The Canvey Island Lifesaving Club" in order to combat the drownings
which occurred each year at Canvey. Today, although known as
"Canvey Lifeguards" this aim is the same but a secondary
function is that of teaching lifesaving and water safety to anyone who in
return will use that knowledge to the benefit of the community.
The club is affiliated to the Royal
Lifesaving Society (RLSS)
The picture above is of the
lifeguard station along Canvey Sea Front.
In 1971 the R.N.L.I was approached to
man a Lifeboat station on the island. Unfortunately they could not spare
an inshore rescue boat and they thought that the area was well covered
from Southend Pier. The council then approached the club to see if we
could man the service. The club had just purchased a new boat and engine
and it was decided to try and provide a week-end service. On police advice
and in co-operation with H.M. Coastguard a dawn to dusk service was
instigated. And has been in place ever since.
