Game Review
Hesperia Christian opened up confidently in this championship game. Granite Hills appeared to have taken HCS too lightly since HCS is Div VAA. HCS opened up to an early 21-17 1st quarter lead. In the second quarter the Cougars realized they had to play hard basketball to win and they upped their efforts. HCS did not shoot well in the second quarter and failed to box out giving Granite Hills numerous second chances from rebounds. Granite Hills clearly defeated teh Patriots in the second quarter 19-7. They continued in the third quarter and HCS appeared to have no answer. HCS defenders could not seem to keep up with the speed of their penetrators and no one underneath picked up the missed defensive assignment. Rebounding continued to be a problem for HCS' big men. HCS on the night only had 23 rebounds. In the fourth quarter, HCS made one last surge to close the gap but could only get the score down to a 12 point deficit. Turnovers by HCS was another reason for their downfall with 19 turnovers. HCS is now 2-1 and Granite Hills is 3-0.
Game Preview
Hesperia Christian opened their 2003-2004 basketball season against Pahrump Valley of Nevada, a tough Div IV team. They followed that with a hard fought victory over Div IV public school rival Silver Valley 67-63. Now HCS will face Div II A cross town rival Granite Hills. Granite Hills will be led by Andrew Ellis who is averaging almost 20 points a game. Ellis gets offensive support from Steven Osbourne and Adit Josan. The Cougers get strong rebounding from Rory Hill. The Patriots are on a 2 game run and with a strong performance can continue that winning streak. Josh Hamilton is averaging over 30 points a game. Against Silver Valley he picked up his defense which was a key to the victory. Junior Loren Barton brought his A game against Silver Valley getting a double double of 18 points and 14 rebounds. He will need to repeat that performance plus controlling Rory Hill on the boards. Soph Billy Hague had a great night versus Silver Valley holding their star Sydney Tharpe to only 19 points and to only 4 points in the fourth quarter. Senior Trevor Wagstaffe will have to play hard defensively and get his ten points plus continuing to get assists to the shooters. HCS and Granite Hills are presently both 2-0.
