May 7, 1995: Shaun Cassidy married his second wife, actress Susan Diol.

May 11, 1972 is the date on the infamous issue of the Rolling Stone magazine with a nude picture of David Cassidy on the cover. In the accompanying cover story, David exposed his true musical influences and aspirations , admitted to a history of experimentation  with drugs, and revealed his growing disenchantment with his teen idol status, bubblegum music, and prepubescent groupies. "I was a piece of raw meat," he told TV Guide of June 25, 1977. "I was being manipulated and was powerless to do anything about it. What I wanted didn't count."

May 11, 1985: David's solo single "Romance" was released in the UK. It rose to number 54 on the Billboard chart, where it remained for six weeks.

May 15, 1971: The Partridge Family single "I'll Meet You Hlafway" was released in the USA. I rose to number nine on the Billboard chart, where it remained for ten weeks.

May 21 is David's mother Evelyn's birthday.

May 22, 1971: "I never thought of myself as a teenage idol," David told the TV Guide. "I don't want to be a teenage idol. I can't go out anymore because I'm recognized wherever I go, so I stay home a lot."

May 25, 1964: Shaun's wife Susan Diol was born.

May 26, 1974: A fourteen-year-old fan named Bernadette Wheeler suffered a fatal heart attack at the  White City Stadium, London. 1,800 people needed medical assistance, and four people ended up in the hospital. This is the main reason why David decided to quit performing. He held one more concert in Manchester, England, two days later. Then it would take more than ten years before he performed on a stage again. Cassidymania was over.

The Times (England) on May 24, 2001, described Johnny Depp as some kind of enigmatic cross between Robert De Niro and David Cassidy.

From Entertainment Weekly, May 28, 1993:

He was the boy toy of TV's Partridge Family, and teenyboppers everywhere swooned at the sight of his sweet, pixieish looks. David Cassidy, all of 5 foot 8, nevertheless towered over every other teen idol of the early 70s, starting with his first hit, "I Think I Love You" which sold nearly 6 million copies in 1970. Shrieking girls mobbed him wherever he went, overturning limousines and tearing at his clothes - or theirs.
But on May 26, 1974, Davidmania took a horrifying turn when a British schoolgirl, 14-year-old Bernadette Whelan, was crushed by a throng of hysterical fans in London's White City Stadium and suffered a heart attack. That night 800 others were treated for injuries, and four days later, Whelan died. Cassidy, now 43, remembers watching young kids rush towards the stage: "My guys would go down and have to pull them out."
London was the next to last stop on Cassidy's farewell tour, having reached age 24 and what he saw as the top of his career as a heartthrob, he retired. In 1978 he resurfaced in the cop series David Cassidy - Man Undercover and later made it to Broadway, replacing Andy Gibb in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 1983. He continues to record and even hit the Top 40 again with his 1990 single, "Lyin' to Myself," but he can't seem to shake his image as a musical lightweight. He has kept his sense of humor, though. His 1992 pop album was titled Didn't You Used to Be...

Cassidy, now married to third wife Sue Shifrin, hasn't let the London tragedy color his nostalgia for his salad days, which he is planning to relive in a book he's penning with Chris Kreski, coauthor of Barry Williams' Growing Up Brady. In August Cassidy hits the road with a campy '70s revival tour. "I'm going to put on my old jumpsuits," he says, "though I need to add a little spandex to them now. You can image what a thrill it's going to be to slip into some maroon crushed velvet again."

As you can see, we have changed the Newsletter a bit, to make it easier for you to print out, but also so you can find what you're looking for faster. You can go to each chapter by clicking on the links on this index page. We hope that you like it this way. The main reason we decided to change it, was because the newsletter turned out to be more than 30 pages long when you printed it out.

However, this site is not the only one that has changed. DavidCassidy.com has also changed. It has now become the informational site that I always wanted it to be, and the reason why I made my site in the first place. Because of this I will stop working on my website as soon as I'm done working on my new and extended David Cassidy discography, and instead concentrate on the newsletter. I have also stopped searching TV Guides all over the world for Cassidy related movies, TV series, etc (read below). Instead I've made a links page to all TV Guides I've been using, so you can make your own search for your own area. This will give me more time for other activities. It will also give me a free hand to help promoting David Cassidy and Kidscharities. Of course I will update this newsletter as often as I have in the past.

Back to the new DavidCassidy.com, I think you should visit right away. You will find most of the info you've been searching, and the shop has now also added Tour t-shirts. Don't miss them.

See ya later,
Erik

Letter from David:

Dear Fans, Friends and Supporters:
I'm writing this letter in an effort to explain the difficulties I've been having for the past number of years in regard to companies or individuals who have been illegally licensing, selling and profiting from products that they are not entitled to sell. In addition, I've never been compensated, nor has my family, nor many others who deserve to be compensated (record companies, songwriters, photographers, musicians, etc.)

Many of you who have been fans of mine and have bought my records, seen my shows, and purchased merchandise have voiced your unhappiness about not having access to material(s) that you may want for your collections. I understand your frustration, however, I have survived over the past 33 years as a professional, and the only way for me to continue to survive as a performer and entertainer is to be able to have people be accountable for licensing or using my name or likeness.

Please don't misunderstand. It is not my intention to ever deny people access to materials that are legitimate and legal, but also be clear that bootlegging or misrepresenting ownership is stealing. These are profiteers who have, without my consent, for the past three decades profited illegally, and without compensation to me.

With the enormous expansion of the Internet over the past five or six years, it is impossible, without your help and support, for me to continue to police and legally try to prosecute, get accounting from, or discover these individuals' locations. Therefore, I ask you all to put yourselves in my shoes. If someone were selling photos, magnets, t-shirts, or recordings of you and your family, and were making money doing so, without their permission or approval, would you think this was fair?

My request to you is very simple. Understanding what is right from what is wrong, what is legal from what is illegal, and what is fair and what is stealing is to be determined by each one of us as individuals when deciding to participate in the selling and purchasing of any such materials.

I ask you to do the right thing. Do not support these people and their actions. I continually feel blessed to have so many of you care about what I do and support me as you have. There is a lot of new product that I've been working on for an upcoming CD, and there is a lot of cool stuff available on my website. I hope you like the evolution of my website. Without your insight and feedback, it couldn't be now what it has become - a real link from me to you. Your thoughts, messages, and ideas, have been extremely helpful in guiding the team at DavidCassidy.com to make this site work for you and for me.

I thank you for your love and support, and I can't wait to see you, wherever you are in the world, on tour in the near future! I mean soon!

God Bless,

David

The Baker's David Cassidy LA Tour

Next time you're in LA [I'll now apologise to all of you that are there cos you've probably done this if you're as wacky as me!] forget Disneyland, Knotts and Universal studios, try the David Cassidy Tour devised by the Baker's, follow in the footsteps of David from his school days to the brink of stardom and beyond.
OK then, we the Baker's are in West LA on our hols, we are staying in Bev Hills, I've got David's book and the DC story written by a J Gregory, a friend of David's in 1972.David says when he first moved to LA he lived in Crestview Ct off Bev Glen. Well here we all are driving down Bev Glen, a nice road through Bev Hills which goes up to the famous Mullholland Dr.
"STOP! Turn left," I yell as I spot the road.
"Bloody hell, Gail," says Kev (my husband), "I can't just turn left, there's no filter, look at the traffic, wish they had roundabouts like we do. How do they cope with all this traffic? Blast, noone will let me go.
"Well," I say, "they drive on the wrong side of the road here."
"No Gail, they drive on the right side."
"Yeah.  but thats the wrong side to me. We drive on the left side which is the right side to me."
"OK, damn glad you're not driving, Gail!"
"Well, I can only drive a car with a gear stick anyway."
Someone beeps us, shakes his fist and shouts out something rude as we pull over.
"Sorry, we're British," I yell back.
"Mum, do they have guns in their cars here?" says Joe.
"Dunno, hope not. Don't cause road rage here, Kev."
We're now in Crestview Ct, nice road with Spanish style houses.
"Well, which house," says Kev. I see a lady walking along the street, she looks about my age, but when I get close I see she's about 70 [this is Bev Hills, everyone looks under 40 here. They have the Nancy Reagan look about them] I say in my posh voice, "Excuse me, I'm from England on holiday here."
"Oh, I can tell that, my dear," she says, "you sound just like the Queen." Humm, my charm is working.
"Please don't think I'm awfully rude, but can you tell me if David Cassidy lived here about 30 years ago?"
"Oh, you mean the young boy who became a popstar?"
     "Yes," I say.
"Well dear, I knew his mother, Mrs Ward. They lived over there, but they moved to Cheviot Hills when she married." She then told me how her late husband worked with Lucy on the "Lucy show" and she was a right so and so, to put it kindly.
Next stop Cheviot Hills. In the book David's friend Alex says he used to sleep over at the house on Glenbar by the golf course. Kev says "OK,  it's not far, we drive down Motor Ave by the park," We see the road, Cheviot Hills is very nice, not as posh as Bev Hills, but nice houses remind me of home.
     Well Kev says, "Which house?"
"Hurry up mum, were starving," say the twins. "Why are we doin' this!"
"Shut up," I say, "we did Disney yesterday, today it's my choice." I say, "Let's video the whole street, 'cos then we're bound to get the house.
"You're barking [mad]," says Kev. "Well, this is near the park entrance, which house?" I see a guy in a garden mowing the lawn.
"Hello there," I say, again in my posh voice. He looks startled, but then smiles.
"You're British," he says, "what are you doing here?"
I say "Do you know David Cassidy?"
     He says "What, the singer?"
"Sure, well, I know he lived in this road in the late 60's," I say. "Do you know which house?" Young guy looks pensive. "Well, I did hear he lived here once, but I'm not sure which house, but Juliet Mills lived over there and Stan Laurel lived over there! Do you want to come in my house and have a look around in case it's mine! You can see  the bedrooms if you like." Gosh, these American's are so friendly, I was tempted but thought it a bit cheeky of me, so I declined.
I said we were off to Las Vegas in a few days to see EFX. He said "Perhaps you could ask him which house then."
Off again, we're now on Pico Blvd. David Cassidy used to have his lunch at "Jack in the Box" on Pico. It says so in the book.
"Mum, we're starving," say the twins. "Can we have a burger?"
In the resturant, eating cheese burgers, the twins say "Mum, David Cassidy might have sat on this table eating his burger, what else does the book say?"
"It says he used to bunk off school, get D and E grades. He forged his report card with A's so his parents gave him a bike, and took it back when they found out. Also him and his mate used to throw eggs at cars." Wow! David's just gone up 100% in their eyes, especially Alex, that's the sort of things u'd do, Al. Too right!
Back in the car we pass Hamilton high school, old brick building just like an English public school, depressing. "No wonder he used to knock off school, mum," says Joe.
We drive up Sunset Plaza Dr and Laurel Cyn, where he also lived and stop at the Canyon County store for a coke, where David said all his fan letters were sent when he got famous. We then drive down Fountain Ave, Kev's going on about how famous this street is. All the old art deco appt buildings where Ava Gardner lived, and old Hollywood stars. Yeah yeah, all I can see in my mind is page 120 of Davids book, don't think I'll recall this to him and the twins.
Next stop Encino, Kev wants to see Clark Gables house, after we drive down White Oak Ave near the reservior, I see a rustic stone house with wrought iron gate. "That's just got to be it," I say.  "How due know," says Kev, "Nice place. What happened here?" I get out and look through the gate. "Nothing," I say, [see page 115 of the book!]
Lastly we walk around Westwood, across from the Fox theatre where David used to hang out. The twins see "Stan's doughnuts."
"Oh look, mum. 20 doughnuts for $10! We want a box each!"
     "Ugh, you'll never eat um."
"Yes we will, please! I bet David used to buy his doughnuts here years ago."
"Well there's a thought. OK, but don't you dare be sick!" I can just picture David tucking into those doughnuts licking the sugar off those luscious lips of his yum yummmmmmm, can't you all?

Gail

After having spent hours every week to search for Cassidy appearances on TV in several countries all over the world, I'd better quit before I have to get a doctor's appointment. Spending so many hours on the internet has really given me problems with a stiff neck every week. So I'll leave the searching to you, by posting the links to some of the TV guides I've been using. I will not post TV shows and movies in this newsletter anymore, unless it's a new show/movie or a TV series that will be back on the screen. Click on the logo above to go to the links.

TV ALERT

The Lifetime Network Intimate Portrait on Shirley Jones will premiere Monday evening. The episode will air Monday May 7, at 7pm EST/PST on the Lifetime cable network - and I got that straight from Ryan.  He's rather proud of it.  He was interviewed and is in it the whole way through, says Michele of The Official Ryan Cassidy Fan Website.

For Europeans, David Cassidy's "Ten of the Best" will be on VH1 Saturday, May 12, at 9pm Norwegian time, which would be 8pm in the UK.
