Sued

Michael Nader

On March 29 actor Michael Nader, 57, who played Count Dimitri Marick on ABC's All My Children for 10 years, filed a $32 million lawsuit accusing the network of breach of contract. Nader alleges that ABC fired him but kept him from working elsewhere after he was arrested for cocaine possession and underwent rehab in February 2001. ABC had no comment.

Is a Stefano recast on the way to Salem?

Michael Nader
Now that Joseph Mascolo is entrenched at B & B, is it time for Days to consider recasting Stefano? After all, he plays a pivotal role in practically every current storyline. Since the new actor has big shoes to fill, Update thinks it would be interesting if Days sought a bigger-than-life personality.

Insiders have speculated that a potential Stefano exists in Michael Nader (ex-Dimitri, AMC). The actor recently admitted, after speaking with AMC heads, that there exists only a slim chance for his Pine Valley alter ego to be resurrected. But can there be a Salem without an evil male DiMera?

Who's In & Who's Out

Michael Nader Psst...Those All My Children fans hoping for Michael Nader's return as Dimitri Marick may have a wait ahead of them.

This past March, Nader exited the role he created in 1991 so that he could seek treatment for substance abuse. (He then was replaced for three months by Anthony Addabbo.) But should AMC become interested in shoring up the Wildwind gang, is Nader ready, willing and able to return? "Michael is in the best shape of his life, physically & mentally," says a rep for the Dynasty vet. "Even with all the problems of September 11, he maintained his sobriety and has been stonger than ever. He is ready to be of service if called."

The phone, though, might not ring so soon. "ABC [told Michael] that they probably would not be bringing him back," the rep notes. "So the headwriter would have to ask for it to be done; that's not for us to do."

Nader Loyalists Sound Off

Michael NaderIn the 10/30 issue, Michael Nader (ex-Dimitri, All My Children) revealed that ABC brass had informed him that he won't be brought back. He advised his highly vocal fan base, the Michael Nader Loyalists, to give up their quest for his rehiring. "Let's have a little peace and closure here," he urged.

After the story broke, Digest was flooded with emails. While a handful praised the network for "saying no to drugs," the bulk expressed outrage. "I understand that he is human. I understand that he is flawed. Am I to understand that ABC and/or AMC will not show the compassion or forgiveness that they preach on their shows?" asked one Nader devotee.

"He told us to stop campaigning -- that it's over," wrote another. "But we are resolved that ABC/AMC will continue to hear from Michael's fans."

Will the Loyalists go quietly? Don't count on it.

Rumors are circulating that new Head Writer Richard Culliton might revisit Wildwind's glory days by bringing back fan faves Michael Nader and Eva LaRue-Callahan. Speculation is fueled by the fact that as an AMC scribe in the 90's, Culliton helped create the character of Dimitri and the gothic Wildwind storylines.

If Wildwind were to rise again, that might woo back lapsed viewers because Edmund and Maria's romance was a favorite, and the Michael Nader Loyalists still campaign for the actor's return.

After the AMC fan club luncheon in September, "There was a huge petition delivered by fans to my apartment building", relates Nader.

All My Children's new head writer, Richard Culliton, will send Laura around the bend and put Leo and Greenlee back together as well as pursue romance for Anna and David, Erica and Chris, and Brooke and Edmund. Rumor has it that Culliton is trying to resurrect the popular Wildwind story line by bringing back Michael Nader (Dimitri)and Eva LaRue Callahan (Maria), but the rep isn't confirming that.

All My Children Fan Luncheon

John Callahan told the crowd that he doesn't know if he and expectant wife Eva LaRue Callahan will have a boy or girl, but "I hope it will be a Callahan," he joked. I sent Michael Nader (ex-Dimitri) out of town." Callahan, of course, referring to the time his on-screen brother slept with Edmund's missus, Maria. Callahan wasn't the only one thinking of the ousted actor. A contingent of Michael Nader Loyalists sported "Bring Back Michael Nader" tags and were armed with a new petition.

Hope For Michael

SOW Letter

Thanks so much for the Michael Nader interview [ in the July 3, 2001 issue]. It took a lot of courage to face the public head-on. He knew he had a problem and that he needed help. Now that he is in recovery, each day will be a plus for him. Hopefully, all of the fan support he has will help him to keep his attitude up. We are looking forward to seeing him again on AMC. But only when he is ready!

Is The Real Dimitri Returning?

SOU Cover

Michael Nader's legal problems were the reason he left All My Children . With those problems now taken care of, will the show want him to return? Nader has no hard feelings about AMC temporarily recasting his role. He feels he failed the show, the show didn't fail him, and he would return if asked. AMC recently wrote his character off when Dimitri and Alex left town, but that doesn't mean he can't return...with Nader in the role.

Extra!
June 28, 2001:

Leeza Gibbons: "The handsome daytime star goes from playing a count to pleading guilty to a count of drug possession. Barry Nolan has more on Michael Nader's personal struggle."

Nolan: "The news in February was grim. The wildly popular star on All My Children had been busted for selling cocaine. Nader lost his job and then dropped out of sight."

Winkel: "He needed something like this dramatic arrest for him to really hit bottom."

Nolan: "Gabrielle Winkel spoke exclusively with Michael Nader for the upcoming issue of Soap Opera Weekly . Nader burst on the scene as Dex on Dynasty in the 80's. Then a DUI arrest in 1997. Seventeen years of sobriety blown in an instant."

Winkel: "He started to drink again...and then his mother died and at that point the pain was so great he turned to cocaine."

Nolan: "In the weeks to come the once dashing Dimitri looked drawn and tired. In the wee hours of February 24th, the Soap star showed up at this seedy after-hours bar."

Winkel: "The police came in with guns and it turned out he was with an undercover cop. Early press reports were that he sold coke to the cop. It was just shared."

Nolan: "After a long night in jail, Nader checked himself into rehab and he told Gabby Winkel he credits co-star Mark Consuelos with helping him through some of his darkest hours."

Winkel: "He (Mark) was really there for Michael. He said, 'Look you've got a problem. You've got to deal with it.' He was very encouraging."

Nolan: "Today Michael confesses to watching his old friends on All My Children , including his Dimitri replacement. ABC has said it would consider Nader's return after his treatment, but for now the actor spends time with his teenage daughter and hopes someday to return to the small screen."

Leeza Gibbons: "That's really tough. I wish him well."
