TIMORESE LOVE TO PARTY AND DANCE When it was said, that we had to unite with native people, we really did that, we tried to live like native people, and socialized with them. That's why, when there were some events in our villages, we had to join… There were two village's parties I and my friends attended when we were there, first the baby baptized (I'm not sure if the phrase correct or not.) celebration and second a wedding reception, both were held in different time, but I still remember the baby's name: Kayla… and the bridge's name: Juliana de Jesus… First, in my mind the 'picture' of village's party is very simple, people will gather in undecorated place, people wear their daily clothes, little food but we will share until everyone get, no music, and finish before midnight. But after I got to those parties, I was wrong…. The places were fully decorated; the people dressed up… some girls wear trendy outfits, like backless tops, sleeveless shirt, mini skirt, and boots. At that time I said, "WOW!" ^^ The food! There were a lot of food, from appetizers to desserts; there were even soft drink and beer…. Aish! Don't compare the food in the party with our daily food! It's luxurious! And in the wedding reception, I even see the big wedding tart and champagne… They rented generator, so there is electricity to turn the audio system on all night. The songs that were played sometime slow eastern Indonesian traditional songs, sometime reggae, and could be Indian songs (hey, do you know that Jucas sings the lyrics of Indian songs perfectly!)…. And they all love to dance… I saw some Timorese guys sat impatiently in their seats when they heard Vengaboys' song ^^ they kept nodding their head… And there is a Portuguese dance called folklore, y'know what almost all the people (from kids to youth) know and can dance that perfectly And the party won't finish before midnight! After 00.00 there were dance session, and everyone should dance (but we always went back home before the dance session, I guess we were the same person, who are easy to get sleepy!^^)… I don't really know, what time those parties really finished, but one day there was another party that we didn't attend, a birthday party, near our house…. at that day, I woke up at about 3 o'clock in the morning, because I needed to go to the bathroom, and guess what? I still heard the reggae songs loudly… wow! There are some thoughts appear in my mind…. Don't they waste too much money to do so? I saw how expensive things are sold, but I can find them in party, soft drink, meat, fancy clothes and so on and so on… I saw the fact of their daily life, and I think, they need the money for some other things that more urgent. Anyway, I don't see it as their own culture, they adopted from western's cultures, and they make it as theirs. But, uhm… that's just my thoughts, I don't want to be nosy! |
