Spikey’s Hedgehog Rescue - Updates

Hawthorn (Spike 4)

This lovely, friendly female weighed-in only 320 g. as a juvenile hoglet, from the Hinckley area, who I collected from the Vets back on 8 August, ‘02... Recovered beautifully from illness (lungworm, etc.), successfully treated at Fairfield Veterinary Centre and grew up to adult size, during last Autumn, but by late-October it was considered too risky to release her back into the wild and that it would be best I continue to look after her during the Winter months. Summary of weight since last newsletter...
20/ Dec. - 870 g. (eating well)
23/ Dec. - 920 g. (eating well)
27/ Dec. - 920 g. (eating well)
1/ Jan./’03 - 960 g. (eating well)
20/ Jan. - 960 g. (eating well).

Now fully-grown, her weight (during Feb.-March) continues to be the same, give or take a few grams, so she seems unlikely to put on anymore weight. Soon, she will be able to be released back into the wild.

Hawthorn (Spike 4) - being weighed.

Brim

Brim is a very beautiful, shy, big hedgehog, now over 2 years old, who’s home is at Coppice Walk, in Hinckley. My friend Ginny brought Brim to me, firstly back in September (weighing almost 1,000 g.) then early-October - he was a very poorly chap needing a lot of TLC, who, because of his illness (lungworm), during October and November lost 300 grams! He plummeted to below 700 g. and I’m certain, that if he hadn’t been such a big hedgehog, he wouldn’t have survived. During those Autumn months, he received more and more treatment at Fairfield Vets - was probably the most visited and stayed at the Vets hedgehog I’ve ever had in!
Well, all the hard work I’ve done too and TLC has paid off - since about mid-November, Brim began to eat again and regaining his weight! Since late-December, his appetite has been huge, going through ¾ of a can to a whole can of food every day!! Update of his weight, as follows...

24/ Dec. - 820 g. (awake, eaten all of his food - dish licked clean)
25/ Dec. - 820 g. (as above)
27/ Dec. - 900 g. (eating well)
1 / Jan./’03 - 980 g. (eating very well!)
20/ Jan. - 1,020 g. (now just over 1 kg.; eating very well)
30 / Jan. - 1,025 g. (eating very well)
12/ Feb., & Mar. - 1,070 g. (eating very well). As you can see, his weight continues to increase above 1 kilogram, so at the time of writing (14/ March) I am having to be careful that he doesn’t become too overweight...particularly also, because last year, when Ginny weighed him in early-Spring he’d been in proper hibernation and therefore well below 1 kg.
This time, because of his circumstances he hasn’t been in full hibernation and the whole Winter, has been eating very well, every day! He is now fully-recovered and his weight stands him in good stead for 2003 and hopefully well beyond. Very soon, Ginny will be having him back in her garden - I would like to thank her so very much for all her help! She informs me how much she misses Brim being around and I too, will miss him heaps when he’s not here with me at the rescue centre - because I’ve also grown to love this hedgehog dearly!

Brim - he was very poorly, but now he is fully-recovered!
  Brim, in late-November, '02.
