One of the problems that occurred on the French front was communication between American and French soldiers. Though it seems common sense that since American soldiers would speak English and French soldiers speak french, this was sometimes overlooked and American soldiers were killed by the French though Allies. One private of the North Stafford Regiment told a pitiful story of how he and seven other soldier's became separated from their regiment and were fired on by the French,-the sort of incident that has happened more than once! In his case three men were killed and three were wounded because they could not shout "Anglais" (English). In vain they cried "Friends," "English,"-the French soldiers did not understand them and continued to fire,-and only two of their number escaped unhurt.
This is just one example of problems that arise in war! Read on about the Cons of the original French plan, "Plan 17".
