OPERATIONS INVOLVING THE USE OF THE FIXED STEADY
WORKHOLDING USING THE 3 POINT STEADY

When working with fixed steadies, the workpiece must be in perfect alignment with the lathe's centre axis, otherwise, the following problems could occur.

1. Drilled or reamed holes will be oversize.
2. Bores will be tapered.
3. Turned faces will not be at right angle relationship to the work's axis and will appear to be either convex or truncated.
4. The work will creep out of the chuck altogether.

DRILLING OPERATION
When the wokpiece is supported in the fixed steady, the surface that the steady points (pads) make contact with must have a good quality finish, in its truest sense, it is a bearing, and must be periodically lubricated; grease rather than oil.
