In
the Prairie ecozone, there is a variety of natural vegetation, but not an
abundance of vegetation. In the drier areas of the ecozone, they have
short-grass prairie. In the areas with more moisture, they have long-grass
prairie. Spear Grass, Wheat Grass, and
Blue Grama Grass
are the most common types of grass in the ecozone. Most of the ecozone
is mainly grassland in the southern part of the ecozone. In the northern edge of
the ecozone, they are covered with trees, most of them trembling aspen and
balsam poplar. The lake areas and the wetlands have the most abundance of
natural vegetation. Some types of vegetation that grows in that area are bur oak
trees, aspen trees and many types of shrubs. Today, there are less natural
vegetation remaining than before. This is because the grassland in the ecozone
is being changed into cropland.
