"The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all
history, whether
man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by a small elite."
-- Thomas Jefferson
Unions are growing. In spite
of an administration unfriendly to unions,
America voted for change, equity, and accountability. Twenty million
Americans are out of work, medical costs are skyrocketing. We have dangerous deficits,
international disrespect, deteriorating infrastructure,
corporate malfeasance, and a growing list of concerns.
George Bush and his cohorts are more
interested in appearances that they are in the health, welfare, and
security of the American people.
Unions stood
shoulder to shoulder with Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. when we fought for civil rights. Our rights are once
again
under attack and we must fight for our values. We can remind people
that unionized workers earn more money than their
unorganized counterparts in any given trade or industry. They also have
more job
security and control over their working conditions than those who
are not protected by a union. We can
lead the way to a better America by demanding competent leadership,
reasonable priorities, affordable health care, and retirement security.
