Attacks!

All right. So everybody has fun watching people fight in anime. But what exactly is everything called? And what are they doing? This is a page for the various attacks that I can piece together or find information about on the web of the shows I watch most often. Probably won't be too big in number of shows, but I hope to make it complete within the shows....

~ Rurouni Kenshin ~ Rekka no Honoo ~ General Kendo

General Information
Battoujutsu: the technique of drawing one's sword from a standing position. The source of Hitokiri Battousai's nickname in Rurouni Kenshin.

Bokken: the bamboo practice sword.

Ken: Japanese for sword.

Kendo: Japanese sword fighting.

Sensei, Shihan-dai, Shisho: one's instructor. Sensei is also often used for teachers in school. Saicho calls Kuukai Shihan-dai, and Kenshin calls Hiko Shisho. Shisho is also used by Kyou to Kazuma in Fruits Basket; by Kyouji to Tate in Jikuu Tenshou Nazca; by Kouryuu (young Sanzo) to Komyo Sanzo in Genso Maden Saiyuki...you get the idea.

Tou: used after a description (i.e., sakabatou, nitou) for swords. Those are "reverse blade" and "double blade" or "twin blade."

Ryuu: not to be confused with the word for dragon. Style, i.e., Hiten Mitsuruugi Ryuu, Kodachi Nitou Ryuu, etc.

Rurouni Kenshin

~ Himura Kenshin and Hiko Seijuuro ~ Shinomori Aoshi ~ Makimachi Misao ~ Saitoh Hajime ~ Sagara Sanosuke and Yuukyuuzan Anji ~ Shishio Makoto ~ Seta Sojiro ~ Other Juppongatana ~ Other Villains

Hiko Seijuuro and Himura Kenshin: Hiten Mitsuruugi Ryuu
Ama Kakeru Ryu no Hirameki: the HMR's ohgi, a super-fast battoujutsu that leads with the left foot for extra momentum rather than the right.

Do Ryu Sen: breaks up the ground and directs it at user's enemy; useful as a distraction technique.

Kuzu Ryu Sen: the technique used to teach the ohgi. KRS attacks the nine vital points on the body at the same time; it requires weight as a charging attack and arm strength as a multiple hit attack.

Kara Take: downward head strike

Kesa Giri: downward shoulder strike (left)

Saka Gesa: downward shoulder strike (right)

Hidare Nagi: horizontal left side strike

Migi Nagi: horizontal right side strike

Hidare Kiriage: upward left hip/leg strike

Migi Kiriage: upwards right hip/leg strike

Saka Kaze: evil straight-for-the-groin upwards center strike

Tsuki: thrust to the chest

Modoshigiri: with an excellent blade and expert control, the user may slice an object so that it is not compromised on a cellular level, allowing the object to be put back together as if it had not been harmed. Fake science.

Ryu Kan Sen: slash at an opponent who has been left open, especially to the opponent's back. When combined with "Arashi" (storm or tempest), an extended sword from a curled up, rolling position. Also used with "Tsumuji" (a whorl of hair).

Ryu Shou Sen: the blade is pounded into the opponent's jaw or neck at an upward angle.

Ryu Tsui Sen: a downward attack from above.

Shinomori Aoshi: Kodachi Nitou Ryuu

Goho Juuji: a scissors-like cross of both kodachi, aimed to cut the carotid or jugular.

Kaiten Kenbu: with one kodachi, a spinning attack that lands three slashes in rapid succession.

Kaiten Kenbu Rokuren: using two kodachi, the same move but with six slashes from either direction. Most effective when the opponent doesn't know from which side he or she will be attacked.

Onmyou Hatsushi: the kodachis are thrown rapidly one after the other, so ducking or blocking one leaves the opponent open to the second.

Onmyou Kousa: a powerful cutting motion with the kodachi, which even cuts Okina's steel tonfas.

Makimachi Misao

Kecho Giri: Misao's favorite move, a straight kick to the head. ^_^

Kansatsu Tobikunai: throwing her many dagger-like kunai.

Saitoh Hajime

Hirazuki: a triple-thrust with the blade held in horizontal position (think Okita Souji of the Shinsengumi).

Gatotsu: a left-handed single thrust, Saitoh's favorite. Also later he teaches it to Sawagejou Cho, but that doesn't happen in the anime as far as I know.

Ishiki: first stance, a direct thrust.

Nishiki: second stance, a diagonal attack.

Sanshiki: third stance, upwards thrust.

Zeroshiki: zero stance, using only the upper body strength to attack from point-blank range.

Sagara Sanosuke and Yuukyuuzan Anji

Futae no Kiwami: by using a double-impact on the object being struck, the user effectively negates the effect of any resistance of the material, demolishing it entirely. Mastery of this technique means any body part can be used.

Kiwami Hazushi: using Futae no Kiwami on one's own body to cancel out the effect of an attack from the other side.

Touate: focusing FnK through a dagger, the touate can be used for distance attacks through the ground.

Shishio Makoto

Guren Kaina: using the fire from Homuradama, the user explodes gunpowder in his gloves.

Homuradama: the blade, soaked in human oils through numerous slayings and due to the fine-toothed egde, is ignited by friction.

Kagezuchi: when lit on the scabbard, the sword's movement creates a tornadic fire.

Seta Sojiro: Tenken

Shukuchi: extremely powerful footwork acclerates the user to faster-than-the-eye speeds from the initial movement. Means something like "reduced earth" because it seems like the user has reduced the distance or teleported.

Shuntensatsu: the only move of his own Sojiro named, which means "Instant-Heaven-kill." Using Shukuchi and a super-fast battoujutsu, this strike is sure to kill if it lands.

Other Juppongatana

~ Sawagejou (Katanagari) Cho

Sakasa Kuchu Noutou: he uses this at Arai Seiku's, when he picks Arai Iori up on the sheath of one of his many katanas, and throws the sheath up in the air, then catches it again without hurting Iori. Needless to say, very cool, and Seiku and Azusa freak out.

Orochi: he uses this attack with Hakujin-no-tachi, the strange whip-like satsujinken. The sword is run along the ground, destroying whatever happens to be there, then goes up and behind Cho's opponent. This is his favorite sword and the one he's most skilled with.

~ Hennya the Flight

Hikku Happa: dropping dynamite on the opponent from above. This is possible because Hennya starved himself down to skin and bones and uses the large wing-structures he wears as a cloak to rise on the initial blast.

~ Honjou Kamatari

Benten Miwashi: using the prongs on the end of his staff, he whirls the chain-and-sickle, flinging it at the enemy.

Midare Benten: combining the spin of the staff and the reach of the chain, an attack that destroys anything that comes within its reach.

~ Uonami Usui

Pouken Pougyoku Hyakka Ryouran: a mouthful for a combination of hits from the heavy rounded end and the blade of the ro-chin. However silly it sounds when said aloud, it is an attack that was capable of wounding Saitoh.

Shin Gan: the "Eye of Heart" which, through heightened hearing, allows him to predict movements of his opponent.

Other Villains

~ Udoh Jin'e

Shin no Ippo: a contest of wills. The user's will forces paralysis upon his victim with his eyes.

Rekka no Honoo

~ Hanabishi Recca ~ Mikagami Tokiya ~ Ishijima Domon ~ Kirisawa Fuuko ~ Kurei ~ Other Villains ~ Team Kuu

Hanabishi Recca

Hachiryuu techniques
Nadare: Dan En (fireball)

Saiha: En Jin (fire sword)

Homura: Ben En (fire whip)

Setsuna: Shun En (fire death)

Madoka: Kekkai En (fire barrier)

Rui: fire illusions

Kokuu: fire wall

Resshin: Um...dunno. Doesn't show up in the anime much. Altho, I do believe he has the Hoh Oh like Kurei...

Ninpo Utsusemi: ninja technique of substitution. Recca uses this one a LOT.

Enmaku: a smoke screen. He uses other fireworks in combination with his flame as well.

Mikagami Tokiya

Icicle/Water Snake: pretty much what it says it is. A snake made of water is what he first uses, then one made of ice.

Mizu Kugutsu: water shadow, substituting an Ensui-made figure for himself.

Tsurara Mai: dancing icicles, which uses a large chunk of groundwater to make icicles fly up to the ceiling. These then take moisture from the air and throw icicles back to the ground, creating a rain of sharp pointy ice that stops when the opponent is defeated.

Zettai Reido: "absolute zero," which freezes anything.

Ishijima Domon

Flying Mohawk Headbutt: this is the only one I really remember. He uses it on Maria in Kurei's mansion. He also uses KuchibashiOh, but I don't think he names any techniques.

Kirisawa Fuuko

Fuujin Kamatachi: air cutter.

Kazedama: tornadic force compressed into a little ball. Extremely powerful.

Kaze no Tsume: "wind claws," when Fuujin is combined with Oni no Tsume. The front three Kaze no Kadama gems form, well, claws made of wind...

Kurei

Genjutsu Wakemi: he stole this from Genjuro of the Uruha Maboroshi. An illusion technique.

Haen: Kurenai's flaming rain attack

Other Villains

~ Kashamaru, Team Uruha Maa

Ninpo Kagami Jigoku: Hell's Mirro, using Nisebi, he can mimic any flame

Temptation: he made himself look like Yanagi and asked Recca to touch his (her?) breasts. >_<

Neon, Team Uruha Oto

Fugue: a concentrated blast of noise

Prelude: slicing wave attack

Quartet: the tag-team move with Miki's Yamabiko, the mirror that can reflct even sound waves

Requiem: the song that calls the faithful! Neon's ultimate attack, which uses the Fukyo Waon to seal an unlimited amount of energy.

Rhapsody: a bomb that generally breaks the ground under the feet of her opponents.

Team Kuu

~ Kuukai

Kuzetsu Shichi Kosatsu: hits eight vital points in the body at the same time, much like Kuzu Ryu Sen.

~ Saicho

Fuyo no Ken: the paper sword, which is solidified by his aura

Nuno Zarashin: cyclone paper dance, which can deflect attacks

Rokka Sen: origami shuriken

Thousand cranes: well, for this one he just put all his energy into Shiki Gami to make the cranes explode, but Ndare kind of stopped that...

~ Daikoku

Hundred Strikes: using his rotating bo-staff, he attacks a hundred times

Thousand strikes: yeah, the same as above, only ten times more

~ Fujimaru and Minamo: I don't think they have anything that was really described in the anime...
