In 1963 Sam Jacks was the Director of Parks and Recreation of North Bay, Ontario. He created ringette so that girls in the community would have a team sport to play during the winter. The first Ringette game ever was played by an Espanola high school women's hockey team in 1966.
Nowadays, his widow, Mrs. Agnes Jacks, serves as the sport's ambassador at the Canadian Ringette Championships and at many international events. Recently, Ringette Canada has even developed an athletic scholarship that bears her name.
Ringette was introduced to BC in 1976 and the British Columbia Ringette Association was established in 1979.
