64. Jacob HORNING (Johann Anton , Johann Georg , Anthonius , Johann Georg , Franz , Peter , Henrich ) was born on 16 Feb 1821 in Spachbrücken, Hesse, Germany and was christened on 18 Feb 1821. He died on 25 Mar 1873 in Shambaugh, Page, IA and was buried in Butler Cem., Shambaugh, IA.

Christened as "Johann Jacob Hornung," Jacob, a twin, came to America with his parents from Germany in 1830. Desiring to be a farmer, at age 12, he worked on the farm of George Hoffman. On April 15, 1842, George Hoffman moved to Canal Winchester, Franklin County, Ohio. Jacob probably went with them at this time.

In 1853, Jacob bought a farm and lived there until 1858 . He then moved his family to Allen Co., Ohio, about 4-1/2 miles from Lima. In the fall of 1864, he went to Page Co., Iowa, by covered wagon with John S. Good, who was his wife Anna's brother, Henry Hoffman, and 10 other families. They settled south of Shambaugh, Iowa, on what is now highway 71. They built a house there in 1865. It was torn down in about 1965. In the election of 1864, Jacob voted for Abraham Lincoln.

By 1870, they had dropped the "u" and changed it to "i", now consistently spelling the name "Horning." He was a member of the Mennonite Church for over 21 years. He died of "lung fever" (pneumonia), age 52. Lowell Horning has their spinning wheel beautifully displayed in his home.

Jacob married Anna GOOD [image], daughter of Joseph C. GOOD I and Magdalena GAMEL, on 3 Oct 1850 in Hocking Co., OH. Anna was born on 23 Oct 1826 in Fairfield Co., OH. She died on 17 Jan 1897 in Shambaugh, Page, IA and was buried in Butler Cem., Shambaugh, IA.

Per a phone conversation with Ray Burley (great-grandson of Jacob & Anna) on Feb. 5, 1995, he said that in about 1919, he and his grandmother, Hattie (Butler) Horning, wife of John Horning, visited the house where Jacob and Anna lived near Shambaugh, IA. No one was living in the house at the time, so they went in through the cellar, then upstairs. Ray's grandmother showed him the corner of the parlor where Anna (Good) Horning would sit and smoke her pipe.

Anna died, age 70, after a short illness, which caused her to be delirious the greater part of the time. There is a picture of her. Deborah (Horning) Lubbs has a "collar" that she wore to Mennonite church services.

				Lydia married Benjamin HERNER, son of Samuel HERNER and Mary SHANTZ, on 24 Mar 1891 in Page Co., IA. Benjamin was born on 2 Nov 1845 in Mannheim, Wilmot Twp., Waterloo Co., Ontario, Canada. He died on 3 Mar 1915 in Cullom, Livingston, IL and was buried in Sullivan Cem.. Benjamin came to America with his parents from Canada in about 1860. He was a member of the local mission board for the Mennonite Church for the state of Illinois and approved of the aggressive work of the Church along the line of missions. He served the public in the capacity of school teacher in Livingston Co. for 28 years. His last term was taught in 1899. Since then the greater part of his time was spent on the farm. He and his 2nd wife had 1 son. Benjamin died as a result of an accident caused by a loaded wagon passing over his body sustaining injuries, which caused his sudden and unexpected death at age 69.

	124	F	ix	Leah A. HORNING was born on 13 Jan 1862 in Allen Co., OH. She died on 13 May 1922 in Elkhart, Elkhart, IN and was buried in Olive Mennonite Cem., Wakarusa, Elkhart, IN. Leah, twin to Isaac, moved to Cullom, Illinois, in 1897 where her sisters, Lydia Herner and Anna Ferguson, lived. This is where she met Elias Ebersole of Sterling, Illinois. She was a member of the Mennonite Church. Leah died of cancer, age 60.
				Leah married Elias Rutt EBERSOLE, son of Abraham D. Buckholder EBERSOLE and Anna Ebersole RUTT, on 5 Feb 1905. Elias was born on 8 Jan 1847 in Lancaster Co., PA. He died on 30 Aug 1914 in Wakarusa, Elkhart, IN and was buried in Olive Mennonite Church Cem., Wakarusa, IN. Elias had 7 children by his 1st wife.
