If this works, let me know.

In the barber shop, with Gill, the one with the tattoo. Can't remember the barber striker and Scotty in the chair.

That is Ralph Shoemaker in the office Can't remember who that was staring at the camera. That's Me standing in the sleeping area in front of the "Poker table". That's Me sitting on the desk with that same guy staring at the camera, I think his name was Purdy.

Zam Zamboni

Ok, everybody remembers Eckhoff, nobody remembers Dockery, therefore, Doc was Wagner. Lots of unmemorable stuff about that poor ship.

Jerry, good to hear from you again, was waiting to hear about the latest race. So Eck retired from TraLant as Cdr, why am I not surprised? He was ambitious.

Glad to help, Mike!

Now, how many remember Abel, BM3, ran the paint locker (just fwd of our living compartment, in the forepeak) with an iron fist, painted his shoes black for inspection. I was just remembering where all we went on that little ship. Portsmouth (London), LeHavre (Paris), Lisbon, Gibralter, Port Au Prince (from Gtmo) Prince Edward Island...not too bad, for a Picket Ship!

I also remember Frank Fenton and myself trying to talk Lt(jg) Beers into letting us off in Argentia, riding the Line on a Connie (we had already got permission from the Squadron), then getting back to Newport and the ship on our own. No way, we were only enlisted men, couldn't be trusted. Remember, we were only allowed to goinside 100 miles on a weekend?

Ah, memories!

yes ..Clarence Eckhoff...tall slim and pock marked face...nice guy....the Wilson I remember also....no first name...can see his face though.....Dockery don't ring a bell....

Two new names: While I was aboard, an RD1, Eckhoff, reported aboard. I think his first name might have been Clarence, not sure. His bud was RDSN/RD3 Wilson.
I learned a lot of the leadership I used later on from him. Anybody hear from him?
Another RD1, Dockery, may have been Pill, or maybe Wagner, not sure. Lots of fleeting and not kept memories from Wagner. He was before my time on either ship, anybody remember the name?

Hi Shipmates

I made one round trip aboard a Super Constellation AEW plane from Argentia to Flores, Azores Island to Argentia, it took 16 Hours and 20 minutes. I met an AC3 Samuel Tucker on the flight. We would meet once again in 1965 GCA Unit #20 NAS Atlanta Where we would stationed together for 3 years.

There was a radioman with the last name of Wilson I us to get in all sorts of trouble with....took him back home one weekend to Buffalo, NY and we got in a big bar fight there....and we had a execs mast together for fighting at fleet landing one nite think it was after a ships party....might you be the same Wilson?....as I recall he was from Oregon.....*laffin*....

Ensign Callaway....stood CIC watches...was assistant something to LTJG Tetreault...(Mr. T)...graduate geologist Yale Univ....we called him Mr Rock Knocker on picket watches in CIC......and he liked that....*LAFFIN*

Seaman Able...he was from Pa somewhere..kinda looked like short Mr Peepers ....his favorite saying was..."It don't mean dick"....he usta take care of the paint locker below our compartment....if there was lower decks inspection on Saturday he would work in late Friday nite...he would come up through the hatch into our comaprtment and always was wobbly from the paint fumes and would paint his shoes glossy black....he would walk flatfooted back aft to his compartment so the paint wouldn't crack and chip off...he left those shoes out for inspection on his locker top...*laffin*

He also came back from a hard night liberty while we were in Le Harve....I was PO of the watch...he came across the brow with a dried bloodied broken nose and bent glasses frame....I asked him what happened....he said he saw a guy across the street and thought he wanted a cigarette....he pulled his pack outta his sock and when he looked up...whammo the guy smacked him in the nose...don't remember if he lost anything and someone else was with him...course he was drunk as *ell too.....*laffin*

There was an Ensign Wise also from Brooklyn, NY....he was in charge of the deckforce...E Div???...when I came aboard...he was putting everybody on report not wearing a hat outside.....I was warned....do you guys remmeber that?

Also the Boats Chief would hit our compartment right after reville to try to catch us in the racks without a sleepin chit...I know some ETs got caught and worked extra duty hours in the bilges cleaning them...they would come up through the hatch into the messhall while we were watching movies in the evening.....*laffin*

Also we would trice up the racks lay on the locker tops with two feet on the floor and sleep and the chief couldn't write us up cause two feet were on the deck....*laffin*

Theres somethings you never forget....those are a few......I got more ....later. Tom

Have you ever written the National Archives and requested the Muster Roll for the Pillsbury. You specify the years, cost should be about 16.25 for a 16mm positive film., which you take to the local library and transfer it to paper so that you have something to work with.

I got mine for the Chatelain, it gives the first, last, middle, service number rate and place of enlistment.

Believe the Pillsbury's would be at the National Archives 8601 Adelphi road College Park MD 20740-6001.

They locate the film for the Muster Roll, write to you to tell you the cost, request you send payment to Atlanta GA...Dont ask why Atlanta, but that is where they requested I send my $16.25 to. Then I got the film about 2 weeks later.

I then went on a searching expedition, using the library with their micro physch, then made up a letter and mailed it to Dear Shipmate,I am attempting to locate crew members who served on USS - - - - - .

I did visit your page, it can become a labor or love. I know how to search and dig up information, but do not know how to even come close to starting a page for the internet. I do keep old and some current address's for the WW!! crewmembers of the 5 ships in the Task Group. (DE's) I never did want to tackle the Air Craft Carrier. So if someone is seeking a WW!! crewmember from the Pillsbury refer them my way. ART

Hi Chief,

I just got home from vacation and saw the division picture. I'll try and name the men but will not know them all because the way some posed. Back Row, Ltjg Merrett, Chief Adams,Treuer.ukn,West, O'Keefe,LaCrosse, Crowder, Crissman, ukn, Tripp, Miles, Heston, Jenkins, Ltjg Guy.Front Row,Cummings, Roberts,Thorne, ukn, Pasailague, ukn, ukn,Miller Parsons, Reynolds,Fredd, Schiltz,Denton, Marshall. Thats all I remember. By the way I retired as RDC in 1970 32 years ago August 3 .Talk to you later.

Bob Tripp RDC RET.

Mike,

I agree with most the names from Tripp of the division.....that means the only one we haven't named is the guy to Treuers left....I know he was an AG...third class?....and I think you mentioned his name to me Harold in an earlier mail?

Also the guy to Tripp's right is Robert Turocy AG2, positive. The only name I have a problem with is LTJG Guy...on the top row end....don't think that was it...but that was over 40 years ago?.....*laffin*... Tom

First pic Gibralter....RDSA Marshall....RDSN Schlitz....SN Castro (Stewart)
Second....Pilsbury & Calcaterra...pretty sure its Lisbon

Tom

Trying to locate just where he is. I think the left side of CIC, as you come in. There should be a SPA-4 between him and the Evaluator's desk.
The cranks are:
Bottom: bearing cursor and range strobe.
Middle: cursor and strobe origin. Air Controllers best friend.
Top:Used when DRI input was used, not very often. But gave a true picture, vice relative, on the scope.

Grau was DCA (Damage Control Assistant). Chief Engineer I believe was Banks, or that name comes to mind. Ltjg Beers I believe was Ops when I came aboard. Not sure, but I think I may have given you the name of Wertz in error. I believe he was ops on another ship. Wise was Deck.

Good job on the roster!

Denis

Mike,

I just took another peek at the web page, looking for something, when I ran across the "aircraft down" part. We were there.
The aircraft call was 16 Knothole, she went missing enroute our Picket station. I was on watch, and we were expecting to pick up her radar picture at any minute, but she never answered our calls.
I recall Grain, Junction, Mahogany. I still think one was Goat Pen, but not sure. How about, you Radarmen? What was the fourth call sign?
There were two Super Connie squadrons, one was Knothole, the other Golden Chain.

Shipmates:

I had to chuckle about Jenkins not having a computer. I spent two years aboard Sterett, one of the first class of ship to be almost entirely run by computer. One of my friends was a Chief Data systems technician. He ran the rooms and the computers that were our NTDS, Fire Control, ship's self defense.

He now lives in southern Washington, on ten acres. He has firewood for the rest of his life. He and his wife Sally are just as gracious as ever. As for technology, he has a telephone and electricity. Period! He does come to all of our reunions, he gets the information by snail mail. He told me he doesn't even have a hand held calculator. Incidentally, for under $50, one can buy a hand-held with more capacity than Sterett's entire system. Which took two rooms. Or, for that matter, the radar computer aboard Enterprise, which took up two entire levels in the island (vacuum tubes, no less).

Elmer,

I see you are on the water. We are close, but not on. Hood Canal on one side, Puget Sound on the other, Admiralty Inlet directly to the north. Cool in summer, warm in winter. So it rains, so what?

I'll try to call Jerry Jenkins after work tonight. I think you told us that he doesn't have a computer so he hasn't seen all of the stuff you've collected from all of us so far. I'll try to convince him to at least take a look on someone else's computer and maybe send in a current photo.

Mike,

Would you mind if we all referred to your Pillsbury website as "our website"? I've been referring to it that way with all of my friends and family around here. I always give you credit, though, for putting the thing together and for bugging us to get the information to you.

Seeing Harry's and Tom's current photos convinced me that I should get a personal picture taken and sent in. My wife took it for me last Friday evening. Almost all of the other pictures of me on the website were taken by Mike many years ago.

I was glad to see your new picture Mike. You're probably like me ... always behind the camera rather than in front of it.

Wish me luck with Jerry tonight.

Regards to all

Elmer Fredd

Mike,

The voice call sign for the Pillsbury was: .. newsboy golf... The cw call sign was: NPEP. The cw call signs for the picket stations were, starting from Newfoundland: GA, GB, GC, GD. Argentia's cw call was NWP7. Funny how I can remember little things like that but, at times, can't remember to zip my fly.

Clarence Wilson

Newsboy G is correct, thanks to Elmer, I couldn't remember. We rarely used it, operating independently as we did. For the stations, GA etc rings a bell, but probably only used to announce, by cw, our arrival and departure. Ship's INTERNATIONAL call sign was NPEP, check the flags in the picture. Her CW call was NAM1. I have had that little bit of Morse imbedded in my brain all these years. We heard it for hours, as the poor radiomen strived to talk to someone in NORAD. NWP7? Could be. Argentia, a relay station, or Colorado Springs, I don't know. I know that they were our ultimate destination, but you would have to ask a Radioman for more. "Radioman"..a job that truly used to exist, just like Radarman, it's probably replaced by something new, having nothing whatever to do with communicating by radio. Voice calls for the stations, not in order, were, I think, Grain, Junction, Goat Pen, and either Mahogany or Pendulum. Both ring some sort of bell.

Mike, except for the group in Lisbon, before do not exist. An extremely vindictive ex has taken, and probably destroyed, thousands, not only from Pill, but every warship I ever served aboard, and some pretty exotic ports. Sorry. A now forthcoming. How about an address for the picture of the ship?

Denis LaCrosse

Hey, Mike on the roster, what about: Charlie Young DK1, from Texas, J.B. Archer LTJG, Supply officer Ralph Shoemaker SK2, Phila. These 3 guys were on board at the same time as me.

Frank "Zam" Zamboni

Two new names: While I was aboard, an RD1, Eckhoff, reported aboard. I think his first name might have been Clarence, not sure. His bud was RDSN/RD3 Wilson. I learned a lot of the leadership I used later on from him. Anybody hear from him? Another RD1, Dockery, may have been Pill, or maybe Wagner, not sure. Denis LaCrosse

Denis,

Yep Abel....BMSN...the only BMSN to make 3rd Class while I was aboard was Lopez...he was from NYC...Bronx... I think?...and he wasn't sure whether he was shipping over or not? But Abel would go down in the Paint Locker from our Division compartment on friday nite to cleanup for lower decks inspection on Saturday. When he came up late in the evening he was paint drunk and had his shoes painted glossy black ....and he would shuffle his feet to remain flat and not flex so the paint wouldn't crack, back to his compartment. He also was in charge of foul weather gear locker.....he gave me a Pillsbury foul weather jacket souvenier to take home...may still be at the Salvation Army?...his favorite sayin was...."Don't mean dick"......

*laffin*....... Tom Cummings

Now that you mention it, i remember the shuffle. I did recall that he didn't want them to crack, but had forgotten the shuffle.

Another character, QM3 Noziglia, older sailor, cruisers and battleships his entire career, until Pill. Full of sea stories, well told, two of which I remember to this day.

And then there was Leon Schnurr, RD3, and his pork chops
