BATMAN |
For his fourth big-screen adventure, Batman had a bigger Batcave and a flashier Batmobile. He also had a new face. In Batman & Robin, Bruce Wayne -- a.k.a. Batman -- was played by TV's favorite philandering physician, ER's George Clooney. He replaced Val Kilmer, who replaced Michael Keaton. Even with a $5-million US paycheque, it wasn't an easy decision for Clooney to don the Bat costume. "I wasn't sure I wanted to be the third Batman. Michael Keaton will always be remembered as the guy who started this new movie franchise. Val will be remembered as the man who saved the franchise," says Clooney. |

"So that leaves me. If anything goes
wrong this time, I'll be remembered as the guy who
flushed the whole thing down the toilet." (And
that's what happened). Then Clooney considered again.
"If I didn't do it, I'd be like that guy on Let's
Make a Deal who didn't have the guts to look behind
curtain Number 3. Even if it's all for nothing, it's been
a wonderful adventure." Clooney feels he earned
every penny of his Batman salary. For almost seven
months, he'd spend four days a week on the set of ER and
then dash over to the Bat sets for the remaining three.
Then there was the Bat suit itself. "It's 45 pounds
of rubber that is intentionally three sizes too small. I
could barely walk in that suit, let alone actually fight,
but it's all for image.'' Clooney's Batman proved disappointing, since he didn't play Batman but rather himself with a Batsuit. Apart from a newer version of the batsuit, Batman wore the ''freeze-suit''. A cheesy looking dark blue and silver outfit that supposedly is resistant to extreme cold and has gadgets fixed on the cloves and legs. |
