Hello Cousin AMY,

Your Dad, DONALD, and I are first cousins. My Grandma Rose told me that I was named after your grandfather. I often joke that "I was named after my Uncle Harry" and people give me a funny stare. His full name was WILLIAM HENRY or HENRY WILLIAM. My Dad's full name was SYLVESTER BERNARD, and I lived my first 18 years at the old homestead in Snydersburg, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. Your Dad used to visit with my Uncle HARRY and Aunt JANE and your Uncle BOB, and your Aunts JOAN and ELEANOR. I remember your dad had a large collection of reel-to-reel music tapes.

I am the oldest of five. I have two brothers and two sisters, (BERNY, ANDY, ROSIE and SYLVIA) who are still living in Fryburg and Leeper, just a few miles from Snydersburg. The old homestead is now a boarding house with 3 or 4 apartments. One of my nephews, MARK, is living there now in one of the apartments.

As a kid, we lived with our Grandma, ROSE GROLEMUND (1876-1966), HARRY's Mom. I never knew my Grandpa, ANDREW JOHN (1862-1957), her husband. ROSE was the daughter of WILLIAM GANNON (Dublin 1845-1913) and MARY ANN LEVY CARROLL (1844-1937), and she ran a little grocery store out of the house for many years. ANDREW J was the son of JOHN GROLEMUND (1816-1891) and CATHERINE GREENAWALT (1830-1914).

JOHN listed his origin as either Baden, Germany or somewhere in the Romansh section of Switzerland. I have spoken to a German in Munich (at the Hofbrau haus) and to a member of the Mayor's staff in Lucerne. The German says that the name is definitely German, and the Schweitzer said it was definitely Swiss. I have a few more leads, but I regret not taking some time to trace the lineage when I was in Switzerland for two weeks in 1982. I was busy with the Chess Olympiade as the team leader for the US Virgin Islands. I didn't play very well, but I had a lot of functions to perform that kept me busy. My wife, SANDY and CHRIS (KEVIN) and I lived in St. Thomas for 15 years before we moved "North to Florida".

I also have partial information on a more distant generation, which includes Webers (or Weavers?) and Hoovers (or Hubers?) and a Tpser (or Ipser). I had some other e-mail from some Grolemunds in Hawaii and California. I used an on-line telephone directory to find that there are Grolemunds listed in quite a number of states, especially Ohio. One of them commented that the name was originally spelled "GROLIMUND" and that it came from Switzerland.

If you're interested to pursue this further, maybe we could make it a joint venture. I have a contact address in one of my messages for tracing the Grolimunds back in Switzerland. But I doubt if we can trace it back to Anu, Enki and Enlil.

It's nice to meet you on line. Our best wishes to you and Troy and regards to my other relatives in Rochester or whereever.

Bright Blessings,

Bill and Sandy Grolemund Palmetto, FL
