*The Next Afternoon*
"They're back," Tammy sang in my ear. I looked at who just walked into the diner. Sure enough, Brian and his blonde friend had walked in. I sighed. Jeez, he is determined.
Tammy walked up to them and sat them at a booth.
"And once again, have requested the services of the great one and only, MacKenzie," she said walking up to me.
I sighed and grabbed two menus.
"Hi," I said, setting the menus down in front of them.
"Hi," they said looking up at me.
"Bathroom," the blonde said getting up.
"Anything to drink?" I asked.
"Water, and Nick will have a coke," he told me.
"Ok," I nodded.
"How come you wont let me take you out?" Brian asked.
"Do you recall the first time you saw me?" I asked him.
"Very vividly, why?" he asked.
"Because, I saw you for the first time, two days ago, for like a minute. Then the next day you come in here asking me out. Dont you think that's weird?" I asked.
"Ive noticed you way before two days ago," he told me.
"Huh?" I asked confused.
"Ive been coming in here for like three weeks. You never waitressed me and I didnt know your name, so I couldnt ask for your services. You caught my eye the moment I saw you," he told me.
"That's kinda scary," I told him. I was getting a little freaked out by him.
"Im sorry!" he exclaimed.
"I mean, I didnt mean to do that. Im not a scary person, I promise," he explained himself.
"It's ok," I laughed.
"Do you think we could just talk when you get off work?" he asked.
"Um, actually, I have to be right home, but, uh I go on break in twenty minutes, if you wanna talk then," I answered.
"Cool," he smiled. I smiled and walked off to get the drinks.
*Twenty-Minutes Later*
"So, tell me something about yourself Brian," I said as we sat on a picnic bench behind the diner.
"Well, what do you want to know?" he asked.
"Where you from? I love your accent," I said smiling.
"Lexington, Kentucky," he answered.
"That's cool. What do you do for a living?" I asked.
"I see," I nodded.
"What about you?" he asked.
"What?" I asked.
"How old are you?" he asked.
"19, you?"
"24. Do you go to college?"
"No, dont have time."
"Why not?"
"Im busy."
"I see. Where are you from?"
"Right here."
We sat in silence and I started to feel a little self-consious.
"Um, I wanted to thank you for your generous tips, but I cant accept it," I said pulling out the $30.
"No, keep it," he told me.
"Are you giving me this because you feel bad for me?" I asked looking up at him. I know he didnt know me or what my situation was, but you dont give such generous tips to just anyone.
"No! Im giving it to you because I like you and you deserve it," he told me.
"Well, thanks," I mumbled.
"Do you think we could do this often?" he asked.
"What?" I asked.
"Just talk. So, I can get to know you better and you can decide if you want to allow me to take you out," he laughed.
"Yeah, I guess we could talk," I teased.
"You have something very appealing about you," he told me.
"Do I?" I asked.
"Oh yeah," he nodded, his cheeks turning pink.
"Well, thank you," I smiled.
"MacKenzie!" I heard Tammy yell.
"Back here!" I called.
"Hon, Billy's inside raising hell, get him out of here please," she begged.
"Son of a..." I stormed off. Brian, close behind me.
"Who's Billy?" he asked as I made my way to the front of the diner.
"A bitter ex," I told him.
I walked into the diner and walked up to where Billy was angerly waiting.
"What the hell are you doing here?" I whispered.
"Take it outside," Tammy said walking by.
I turned and walked outside, sensing that Billy was following.
"What do you want from me?" I asked, tears forming in my eyes.
"I want Hayley," he answered.
"No," I told him.
"Why not?" he asked.
"Billy you're a drunk, who's always fucking doped up on drugs and Im not letting my child be around that. Clean yourself up and I might consider it," I spat.
"I have a right to see her," he told me.
"Last time I checked, Hayley didnt have a father. You made it clear when I was four months pregnant that you wanted nothing to do with her or me," I argued.
"What's her last name?" he asked.
"Go home Billy," I begged.
"I just want to see Hayley," he actually looked sincere about it.
"Clean yourself up, if you do that, I might consider it," I told him.
He didnt say anything, just walked past me to his car and got in, without a word. Fucker.
