Chapter Four

"Are you ok?" Brian asked coming outside, as I watched Billy take off.

"Actually, I have to do something real quick," I said and ran inside. I ran to the back and picked up the phone and dialed my house number.

"Hello?" Ashley picked up.

"Hi Ash, look Billy just left here, I dont know where he's going, but I want you and Hayley out of that house, ok?" I asked.

"No problem, we'll go to the zoo or something," she told me.

"Great," I smiled.

When we hung up I walked back to the front, Brian standing ackwardly around.

"Are you ok?" I laughed.

"Yeah, why?" he asked.

"No reason," I said.

"What?" he asked, looking hurt.

"Oh, nothing. I guess I better get back to work. Where's your friend?" I asked curiously.

"Nick? Oh, he left earlier, we didnt come together," he told me.

"Oh, ok," I nodded.

"So, I'll talk to you tomorrow?" he asked.

"Yeah," I smiled.

"Great. Thanks," he said and walked away.

"Here, the blonde one left this for you," Tammy said walking up. It was another $20.

"Where do they get this money?" I asked stuffing it in my pocket.

Tammy chuckled and walked off.

*Later*

"Hayley!" I called walking inside.

"Mommy!" I heard her familiar voice squeal.

"Hi honey," I said pulling her into a hug.

"I gotta go. Im gonna be late!" Ashley said rushing out of the door.

"Bye!" I called.

"Im taking your truck. Hayley's car seat is in my car, I dont have time to take it out," she called to me.

"Ok!" I called.

"So, what should we do Hayley?" I asked.

"Taco," she told me. I laughed.

"You want a taco?" I asked.

She nodded.

"Ok, I gues Mommy can afford to take you to Taco Bell (yum!).

"Come on," I said grabbing my bag and her bag.

"Bye bye," Hayley said to the house.

We got into the car and we were on our way. When we got to Taco Bell, I ordered my usual, chalupa (Hey Leah, wanna go to Taco Bell? We havent gone in like 2 days!) and I ordered a taco for Hayley. We sat down and she happily ate her taco.

"Yummy?" I asked. She nodded and giggled.

"I love you Hayley," I told her.

She pointed to herself and then at me.

"You love Mommy?" I asked. She nodded and took a big bite from her taco.

I looked over the plants that were blocking us, from anyone seeing, I didnt want to take any chances with Billy and everything. Standing in line was that guy, Brian. I gasped and looked at Hayley.

I didnt want him knowing my situation just yet. Either he would pity me and walk away or he, well he would just walk away. I wasnt sure if I wanted him to just walk away just yet. I took a closer look and realized it wasnt him. I sighed in relief and smiled at Hayley.

"You ready?" I asked as she finished off her taco. She nodded and wiped her hands with the napkin I had provided.

"Great! Let's go," I smiled.

*The Next Day (at work)*

"The usual fan club over there MacKenzie," Tammy said, when I walked in at 9 am.

"Thanks," I nodded and grabbed the usual two menus and walked over with two cups of coffee.

"Hey," I said setting down the coffee.

"Wow, she doesnt have to ask anymore," Nick exclaimed. I chuckled and looked at Brian.

"Omelets?" I asked.

"How'd you know?" Brian asked.

"Wild guess," I laughed.

"When do you go on break?" Brian asked.

"11," I smiled.

"Two hours?" he commented.

"Yeah, two hours," I nodded.

"Ok," he nodded.

I couldnt help but adore his determination. I couldnt help, but be attracted to him either. But, I knew as soon as he found I out I had a daughter, he'll do what all the other ones do, run. I sighed and walked away to put in their orders.

"Why dont you just give him a chance?" Tammy asked as I stood in the front with her.

"Because, I know what will happen. He'll see Hayley and just smile and say, 'Thanks, but no thanks'," I said matter-of-factly.

"Come on MacKenzie, not every guy is going to do that," she tried to convince me.

"Tammy, he's come in here four days in a row, the second day started asking me out. What do you want me to do, automatically trust him?" I asked.

"No, but I want you to give him a chance," she narrowed her eyes at me.

"Maybe, the next time he asks, I will. Maybe," I told her.

"I love you MacKenzie!" Tammy called as I walked to the back to get their breakfast. I laughed at Tammy.

When I set down Brian and Nick's omelets, I asked, "Anything else I can get you?"

"Water," Brian and I both said at the same time. I laughed.

"I know, I know," I said and walked off. I got his water and returned promptly.

"I'll wait at 11 in the front here," he told me.

"Ok," I nodded.

I suddenly started feeling very nervous.

*11*

"Hey," I said to Brian when I walked outside. He was leaning up against a BMW Z3.

"Nice car," I commented.

"Oh, thanks," he said looking at it.

"Wanna go to the back and talk?" I asked.

"sure," he nodded. He followed me to the back and we sat down at the same picnic table.

"So, what do you want to talk about?" I asked, hoping he would ask me out soon.

"You," he told me.

"What about me?" I asked.

"What happened with you and that guy from yesterday?" he asked.

"Oh, Billy? Oh, um, I have something that he wants and doesnt deserve," I answered, looking away, making it obvious I didnt want to talk about it.

"Ok, do you uh think, I could take you out to dinner now?" he asked.

I looked up at him and smiled, "You're really determined, huh?"

"I cant let you get away without giving me a chance," he told me.

"I see, well, I'll tell you what. You can come by my house tonight and you can make your decision on whether you are positive you want to take me out," I told him.

"Huh?" he asked.

"Just do it," I told him.

"Ok, um, I need directions?" he asked.

"Come in, I'll write my address down.

We walked into the back of the diner and I grabbed a piece of paper and scribbled down my address and briefly explained to him where I lived.

"Ok, I'll be there at 6:30," he told me smiling.

"Ok, see you then," I smiled.

"Im really glad you agreed. You wont regret it," he told me.

"I hope so," I smiled.

"See you tonight," he said and walked away. He turned around to smile at me and then he left.

"You're going to go out arent you?" Tammy asked when I walked up.

"Why do you say that?" I asked.

"His face was glowing and it looked like he was a little bit in shock," she laughed.

"He's cute," I smiled.

"Yeah, I knew you liked him," she said accusingly.

"I dont know him!" I denied.

"You know him well enough," she told me.

"I guess so," I mumbled and walked to wait on a table.
