Chapter Five

"I think Im going to go to my room now," I said glaring at Brad and walking towards the stairs.

"Marissa. I think you and Brad should go out tonight," my father called after me.

"I already have plans!" I said annoyed and walked upstairs.

When I got to my room I threw my bag on my bed and took a shower, I didnt feel like listening to anyone bothering me.

When I got out, I put on a pair of short gray boxers and a white tank top. I sat down at my desk and began to study Calculas.

"Hey Marissa," Brandon, my 2nd oldest brother said coming into my room.

"Hey," I said shutting my book.

"What's up?" he asked.

"Nothing. What about you?" I asked.

"Well, I just wanted to talk to you about Dad's 'plans'," he said.

"Oh."

"Dad wants you to be in a finacially secure relationship. That's why he wants you to marry Brad. Brad's family has money and Brad will too. He'll be able to take care of you and support you," Brandon explained.

"Im sorry Brandon, but I dont think so. I dont even know that guy down there and Dad is already telling me Im going to marry him?! What is that?" I asked.

"Look, that's how it was for him and mom and their parents as well. Julian and Jackie were forced into marriage, Im marrying Stephanie in a few months. Our family is money. We keep that a tradition. You're going to marry him no matter what," Brandon told me.

"Excuse me?" I asked shocked.

"You heard me. Brad's money, therefore, you're going to marry money."

"I cant believe this!" I exclaimed.

"Get over your little boy toy, Nick," he shrugged.

"I just met Nick. I dont have a thing for him," I denied.

"You just met him?" he asked.

"Yeah, yesterday at school," I answered.

"Well, dont let anything develop Marissa. Dad wont let you marry him," Brandon advised.

"Who said anything about marrying him?" I asked.

"No one. But, Dad wont even let you have a relationship with him. So forget it," he ordered.

I stared at him shocked. It was like from the day I was born they had my life planned out for me. I would go to Stanford, major in law, get married, to Brad and have babies and carry on the ridiculous tradition. Well, that's something Im not going to do.

"Whatever," I said and turned away.

I heard Brandon leave my room and I groaned in frustration.

"Marissa, you have a guest," Ruthie announced knocking on my door.

"Ok, I'll be right down," I told her.

I ran downstairs and saw Nick looking around in the front hallway.

"Hi Nick," I smiled.

"Hey, I decided to come by early. I hope you dont mind," he said.

"No, not at all. Come on upstairs," I said.

We walked upstairs and I shut my door.

"Do you have a boyfriend?" Nick asked me as he turned on my radio.

"What?"

"Do you have a boyfriend?"

"No, why?"

"I dont know. It was just a question," he said looking away.

"Oh, ok."

"How long have we known each other?" he asked.

"Two days," I laughed.

"Oh."

"Why?"

"Because, I dont know."

"Ok."

"I know we barely know each other and everything, but I think we get along good."

"Me too," I agreed.

"Do you wanna maybe, uh..." he stuttered.

"Sure."

"Huh?"

"Sure," I answered, knowing what his question was.

"Really? Even though you dont know me?"

"I know you."

"Yeah, well, not that well."

"Do you want me to take that back?"

"No!"

"Ok then. Stop complaining," I smiled.

"Im not."

"Marissa!" my father said bursting into the room.

"What?" I asked annoyed.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

"Nothing," I said confused.

"Oh. Well, tomorrow night, you'll be going out with Brad for dinner and you'll meet his parents."

He walked off, not allowing me to have the last word. I looked at Nick, with worry in my eyes.

"We'll work it out," he promised.
