Chapter Six

“Im not going out to meet his family tomorrow,” I told my father. He had returned, to tell me something, then the argument began again.

“Yes, you are,” he told me.

“No, Im not,” I argued.

“Why not?” he asked.

“Because! I dont want to!” I exclaimed. I looked at Nick, grabbed his hand and dragged him out of my room.

“Marissa, get back here,” my father ordered.

“No,” I said and continued walking, Nick right in front of me.

“STOP!” my father yelled.

I jumped, startled.

“What?” I asked turning around.

“Come here,” he ordered.

I looked at Nick and then back at my father.

“I’ll be right down Nick,” I told him.

Nick finished walking down the stairs and I stood in the same place.

“Come here,” Dad said.

I walked over to where my father was and looked up at him.

“What?”

“I want to keep our money tradition alive. You will meet his parents and you two will be married after graduation,” he whispered harshly.

“Why are you doing this to me?” I asked, tears forming in my eyes.

“Because, I dont want anything to happen to you,” he told me, sincerely.

“Well, cant I just find someone who cares about me and will make sure nothing will happen to me?” I asked.

“Look, Marissa. Our family has never married anyone because they loved them. That’s just the way our family is,” he told me.

“Well, I’ll tell you this. I am not marrying someone I dont love. I cant believe you’re already planning my wedding,” I said, still in disbelief.

“That’s just the way it is Marissa,” he told me.

“Looks like tradition is going to die with me,” I said bitterly and walked off.

I ran downstairs and saw Nick sitting down on our couch.

“You ready?” I asked.

“Yeah,” he answered.

I grabbed my bag and we walked out of the house together. He opened the car door for me and smiled.

“Im sorry Nick,” I said sympathetically.

“It’s not your fault. I have a good feeling about you Marissa. Im not going to let your dad take you away from me. Especially because of that guy,” he told me.

“Are you sure you want to gert yourself into this?” I asked.

“I have a feeling it’ll be worth it,” he smiled.

I smiled and kissed him lightly on his lips.

I got into the Durango and waited patiently for Nick to get in. When he got in, he drove away from my house and we were on our way. I dont know where we were going, but as long as it was getting me away from my father, I didnt mind.

“We’ll go by my friend Brian’s house. Is that ok?” he asked.

“Yeah, it’s cool,” I smiled. He reached over and took my hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze.

“It’ll be ok,” he smiled.

“Yeah, I think it will be too.”

We pulled into a driveway and we got out. I walked to the other side, where he was waiting for me. Our hands automatically came together and we walked up to the front door, hand-in-hand. Nick didnt bother knocking, he just walked in.

“Bri! We’re here!” he called.

Brian came running up, laughing, “Hey ya’ll.”

He was a cutie. He was about 5’7 or 5’8, short brownish hair and beautiful blue eyes. He had a thick southern accent that matched his smiling face.

“Hey man. This is Marissa,” Nick introduced.

“Your girlfriend?” Brian wiggled his eyebrows, I felt my cheeks turn pink.

“Yeah, my girlfriend,” he smiled.

“Whoa! I was joking, when did this happen?” Brian asked.

“This afternoon,” Nick answered.

“How long have you known Nicky?” Brian asked as Nick cringed to the nickname.

I laughed nervously, “Two days.”

“Wow, and you two are already going out?” Brian asked confused.

“Look at her, she’s beautiful. You’d go after her too, wouldnt you?” Nick asked, smiling down at me.

“Yeah,” Brian said smiling.

Nick shot him a look.

“Hey! You know I got Leah,” Brian assured him.

“What about Leah?” a pretty blonde asked coming up behind Brian.

“Hey Leah,” Nick said.

“Hey Nick,” she greeted.

“This is Nick’s girlfriend, Marissa,” Brian introduced.

“Nice to meet you,” she smiled.

“You too,” I smiled back.

“So what brings you guys here early? I thought we were meeting at the movies tonight?” Leah asked.

“Long story,” Nick and I both said at the same time. We smiled at each other and laughed.

“Oh, well do you guys want to go get something to eat?” Brian suggested.

“That sounds good,” Nick agreed.

We all left, Leah and Brian went in Brian’s Beamer and Nick and I in the Durango.

“I think you’ll like my friends,” Nick predicted.

“Im sure I will,” I said smiling.

“I hope you will,” he said.

“Why are you so worried?” I asked.

“I dont know. I just like you and I want you to like my friends,” he shrugged.

“Dont worry about it Nick,” I smiled.
