You've got a great site, with information that most gay-folk don't know about. (I didn't) And should! Knowing about history improves our future!

I did not realize anyone would fight for gay or lesbian rights during the Victorian period in history for fear of being hanged or beheaded; that happened a lot

I'm especially tuned into gay history, since I recently wrote and recorded a single called "Pride," which summarizes GLBT history of the 20th Century. Unfortunately Karl Heinrich isn't in the song (Ulrichs is hard to rhyme)...
--Jon

Thanks for the information on Karl...I had never heard of him nor anything about a man who really is responsible for initiating the gay rights movement. I have read your list of suggestions and can certainly do several of the things on the list

I admit to never having heard of him...It DOES sound like Karl has played an important part in your relationship and added to your interests in common. How long HAVE you been together now? Computers and the internet are truly magical. Perhaps one day they will break the time travel problem and you two will be able to sit down with Karl and find out exactly what it was like to be alive in his time and to make those choices. Perhaps Bill Gates is working on it even as we speak!

Subj: Riding with Karl?
I would like to share a short story with you:

Coming out of a restaurant in Madison, WI, my girlfriend and I noticed a car that was loaded with rainbow stickers and other "family" labels. We enjoy looking for these and pointing them out to each other, you see. :-)

This particular car had a bumper sticker which read, "Riding with Karl." Neither of us had any idea what that might mean, but in view of the rest of the cars decorations, we assumed it to be a phrase related to gay pride in some way. A few weeks passed, and we decided to try to find out what we could. I posted a question on a lesbian message board and waited for an answer.

In the meantime, my girlfriend found the web site you created. I am almost positive that "Riding with Karl" refers to Karl Ulrichs. This has been really informative and interesting reading for both of us. We put the link on the lesbian board as well.

I also wanted to let you know that the story is getting out ... bit by bit!
--Tundra

Grand merci de l'avoir traduit en français, ce qui me permet d'en parler autour de moi...Je pense également qu'il est important de rappeler NOTRE histoire, l'Histoire dont on ne nous parle jamais sur les bancs de l'école!!! [Big thanks for translating it into French, which allows me to be able to talk about it...I also think it's important to recall OUR history, the history they don't teach in school]
--Filou

Several years ago I discovered translations of Ulrichs' writings. These two books are treasured parts of my personal library. I am duly floored by his progressive thoughts and his courage...I look forward to the much-needed, long-overdue birthday celebration of this nearly-forgotten and rarely-recognized civil rights worker!
--Clarence

#801
I can't believe that someone was speaking out for gay rights that early in history. I am glad that you contacted me
--Matt

#806
Thank you very much for the wonderful website; I enjoyed reading it and looking at the pictures...A little suggestion: The Muse Urania is not identical to Aphrodite Urania, to whom Ulrichs' "Uranism" refers
--W.S.

#809
Thanks for the inspiration! Ulrichs' story reminds me that one person can make a difference
--Felix

#810
Might I recommend a marketing technique for your translation [of Ulrichs]. How about calling it "Harry Potter and the Wizard of Westerfeld?"
--Joseph

I am a fifty eight-year-old gay man, who for the first fifty years of his life was convinced that he and his desires were of the most vile and dirty kind. My cowardice is well illuminated by the honesty and sacrifice of men such as Ulrichs. It is incredible, though I was born 47 years after his death, that the impenetrable cloud of misinformation and ignorance, which has been societies' defense against the likes of us, is still as potent as it was in his lifetime; however, Ulrichs dared to challenge and I dared not.
--Clint
