m. Freni Gering, b. 1805; dau of Mr. anmd Mrs. Moses Gering. Children:
Anna, Peter, Freni, Jacob Refer to P &E Kaufman Family Record p289 ff for
extensive descendants of this couple. "Peter Kaufman, my grandfather, came
over from russia to South Dakota with his children as grandma passed away
in Russia. He was not very tall, about the size3 of my brother, Ben
Kaufman, and looked like him even to the squint in his eyes. Grandpa was
a very good craftsman. He made his own tools, built his cart to haul the
tools, made the harness ikncluding the collar, which was made of rags
(some of you young fellows would not know what a horse collar looks like
today). He was very accurate and exacting. HJe made swiss cheese for the
children and neighbors. He also made utensils out of wood. He knitted
gloves and stockings. He despised anything that pertained to fashion. I
remember how mother hid the ribbons and colored dress material, especially
red, when grandfather was around because he would scold her."
