If there is one thing I have found I don't have,.it is a lot of spare time.  Spare time...it is a luxury. I love gardening, but the last thing I want to do is spend a lot of time replanting and tending to my gardens. I want to be able to enjoy my gardens. rudbeckia.jpg (16532 bytes)

When I learned what perennials were, I knew I had been truely blessed. What an awakening. Just when I only thought there were only one kind of plants, annuals, i.e. celosia, marigolds, zinnia, vinca, impatiens, etc. These are great for long lasting flushes of color, fillers
and should never be left out of any garden. But they have to be  planted annually.

And as I expanded my gardens, this became a time consuming chore.  Whereas, many perennials only have to be planted once, give year after year of enjoyment, are carefree, require little attention, and have become standard baselines for all my gardens.

Because there are a number of perennials now available on the market, one must educate oneself in order to make the right choices.  Which will be the best for your garden, disease resistant, drought tolerant, etc.  In the end these questions have to be dealt with.  Perennials are wonderful, just so long as they are adaptable to your locale. These can be an expensive lessons to learn, as perennials (now hot items in the nursery trade) are becoming the most popular plant in the garden.

Lupines and alpine perennials as well as other exotic are beautiful, but they tend to perish under the Southern sun and humidity. They are not impossible to cultivate, but can be time consuming in the attention they need. I searched and read and searched and read some more.  My ultimate conclusion through trial and error was that usually native perennials were the best choice.  They live here (once widespread naturally), they tolerate the climate, and even some tolerate the extremes that can be associated with the South.
