The first
consideration when choosing a garden site is to find a vacant spot
which is not required for other activities. The type of plants to
be grown will determine the conditions required and which cultivation
method to be used.
- Soil
suitability - Some plants need sandy soil while others
need clay and some plants need moist conditions, others like it
dry.
- Position
- Certain plants may require shade, others require sun,
some maybe frost resistant while others may not.
- Keep
clear of services
- Trees and shrubs should not be planted near overhead or underground
powerlines or telephone lines. They should not be planted near
or over underground pipes whether they are water, gas, sewer or
stormwater.
These requirements are
not as important when growing flowers, vegetables, or herbs because
they are small in size. They can be grown anywhere because they have
small root- systems, therefore they are ideal for the No-Dig method.
