Notating Pawns

Pawns are notated by the file and rank they reside on - similar to cartesian cooridinates or the game "Battleship"

Examples:

e4 - King's Pawn opening

Capturing of Material and Movement

To notate the capture of material one writes the piece symbol, an "x" and then the square to be captured. To describe movement, write the piece and then the destination square. If two of the same pieces are on the same file, describe them by rank, and if they're on the same rank, describe them by file

Examples:

Ne6 - A Knight moves to e6. Note: If two pieces reside on the same rank, describe them by file (Nde6), if two pieces reside on the same file, describe them by rank (N4e6)

Nxe6 - A Knight moves to e6.

axb5 - The Pawn on File A captures b5.

h2 - The Pawn on File H moves to h2.
