National Floral Emblem

Although it had been recognised as Australia’s national flower since the early 1900’s, golden wattle (acacia pycnantha) was not officially proclaimed until 1988. It’s golden, fluffy flowers and green foliage are said to have inspirited Australia’s national colours of green and gold (Barwick & Barwick 2000b).
Golden wattle is found in scrubland areas of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. It can grow up to 8 metres tall.
Throughout Australia, Wattle Day is celebrated on the 1st of August every year, providing Australians an opportunity to their floral heritage (Office of the Prime Minister 2003).
