Glossary of Terms
Throughout this website, there are some words in bold. These are words that are Australian slang or technical words. Their meanings are listed below in alphabetical order.
A.B. Patterson: A famous Australian writer (1864-1941).
Anthem: A ceremonial song, especially for a nation, but also for a company or organisation.
Billabong: A lagoon or waterhole that used to be a bend in a river.
Federation: The joining together of separate colonies or smaller states to form an independent nation.
Monolith: A single block or piece of stone of considerable size, whether in the natural or fabricated state.
Plebiscite: A direct vote of all electors, used when a government wants guidance about an issue that does not need a change to the Constitution.
Southern Cross: A constellation of stars in the formation of a cross, which can be seen from the Southern Hemisphere.
Swagman: An unemployed man who wandered the countryside looking for employment or begging for food.
Troopers: Policemen, usually on horseback.
