GOTHIC CULTURE
this is my page devoted to the goth culture. my opinion on what "goth" is - i believe it is a state of mind and a deep appreciation for the darkness/dark things- mainly having to do with art (music, movies, paintings, poetry, clothing, etc) and a dark aesthetic of such. and everyone has a different definition of what it is. people say i am goth often, i wear black all the time and my intrests are become quite dark in nature. but i prefer not to label myself. old school - dark wave goths i think get the definition of goth confused with their form of goth. there are all different types of goths. dark wave (cyber/industrial-goth) is a type, as is period goth, graver, etc. even if goth evolved from the 80's post punk music etc, it has evolved into a subculture, and not just a musical scene.

What Kind of Goth Are You?

yes they often wear a lot of black and listen to metal and industrial music, watch horror movies etc. they also tend to be intrested in death, art, paganism, witchcraft, etc. i dont label myself, though i used to. i'm not into bondage stuff & kinkiness, i dont wear corsettes, vinyl dresses, knee high boots, and tons of makeup. i am into a lot of goth type of things, movies, art and music. i love heavy metal music - such as godsmack, rob zombie, metallica, and NIN. i love gothic art.. i am all about art and dark art. i love the art of jessica galbreth. i love body art, especially tattoos, of which i have 3 so far and plans for many more. i have several piercings as well, but i took many i had out because i am just not into them as much as i used to be. i love living dead dolls and things like that. i am obsessed with the night, vampires, bats, horror movies, etc. and the wicca that i practice is also gothic-celtic. i wear only black because i love it, but also because i am not comfortable in colors. really like the color purple now too, for its wiccan spiritual signifigance and for accesories etc i love black and purple roses. i think its bullshit that people think goths are only depressed or cutters or bi. thats all bullshit. some are sure, but not all. and why cant being goth make one happy? i believe the beauty of the darkness can make one happy. it makes me happy.
according to the book "the
goth bible":
defining goth is like defining
god. to call goth merely a subculture does not do it justice... Nobody knows
what modern goth is about, but the simplest truth is this: Goth is a state
of mind. and while most people who define themselves as goth or gothic dress
the part, a lot of people who do not wear fishnet and velvet are goth inside.
goth is a way of being that embraces what the normal world shuns, a lean toward
and obsession with all subjects dark and grim, a view of life that incorperates
the world of the night and the world of the day. the gothically inclined make
room for the noir in a global culture that favors white and prefers its darkness
sanitized... Goths have always existed. they just call themselves "goth"
these days because its amusing.
gothicsubcuture.com says:
"But what does gothic mean in regards to the group of people? Here's where it gets confusing. There are things that many Gothics like that are not gothic (Industrial or Classical music). There are things that are gothic that many Gothics dislike (vampires, interest in death). There are things that some people think are gothic that are not gothic (bands like Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails), and there are things that do not call themselves gothic even if they are considered gothic by most people (bands like Sisters of Mercy and Dead Can Dance). However, there's no Grand Gothic Judge to decree what is truly Goth and what is not, although there are plenty of people who claim to be it. IT'S AN AMBIGUOUS LABEL with many people using it that don't understand what it means. The people who do understand it often have many different definitions."
goth.net says : a subculture that
evolved from a musical scene to encompass art, literature, fashion and a shared
'dark aesthetic'.

Word History: The combination Gothic romance represents a union of two of
the major influences in the development of European culture, the Roman Empire
and the Germanic tribes that invaded it. The Roman origins of romance must
be sought in the etymology of that word, but we can see clearly that Gothic
is related to the name Goth used for one of those invading Germanic tribes.
The word Gothic, first recorded in 1611 in a reference to the language of
the Goths, was extended in sense in several ways, meaning Germanic,
medieval, not classical, barbarous, and also an architectural
style that was not Greek or Roman. Horace Walpole applied the word Gothic
to his novel The Castle of Otranto, a Gothic Story (1765) in the sense medieval,
not classical. From this novel filled with scenes of terror and gloom
in a medieval setting descended a literary genre still popular today; from
its subtitle descended the name for it.

A GOTHIC HISTORY by XxmissimoriticialxX
Goth or Gothic is a style NOT a person!!! The style originated in 15th century Germany and was called "Middle Gothic." The Gothic movement was a response to the repression of Christianity and the movement had to develop as underground: a pagan revival of sorts. Many members of this Middle Gothic movement were, then as now, Artists, Poets, Musicians and Thinkers who questioned the paradigm that created their society.
They tended to use Paganism as "a Sword of Illumination" to light the path through the world that is dark, asleep and blind. The Goth style of dress, the darkening of the eyes, as well as the Gothic symbols where meant to represent a sense of self empowerment and solidarity within the movement.
The colors red and purple and the shade black were chosen to represent this movement as a way to mock the church and the royal courts (Kings & Queens) who saw fit to force religion on the people. The people who made up this Middle Gothic movement were not violent nor were they drawn to the ways of evil (as it is with the Goth way of today) but were only concerned with being afforded the right to express their creativity and ideals through their arts without the fear of oppression.
