Mr. Deeds
I
am a sucker for a good Adam Sandler flick. Sadly, this is not one
of them. It had a few moments, and the best ones came not from Adam,
but from John Tuturro as the "sneaky sneaky" butler. Winona
Ryder just looks uncomfortable throughout the whole enterprise. Adam
has fun entertaining the fantasy that he can kick the shit out of
anyone who deserves it, but no one really buys it. I think there may
have been a plot in there somewhere, but I couldn't find it. Rent
The Wedding Singer instead. Or even Big Daddy.
The Bourne Identity
Matt
Damon has almost redeemed himself for All the Pretty Horses,
and The Talented Mr. Ripley. This is a perfect summer flick--though
it's pretty light on the sex, there's plenty of violence and fast
music to make up for it. Sit back, enjoy the explosions, the chase
scenes, and Damon's rippling . . . everything. Franka Potente is reason
enough to go see any movie, and she adds a nice touch to the standard
spy-fare here. (If you haven't seen Run Lola Run, I don't even want
to talk to you. Go. Now.)

John Q
In a
brilliant twist of sledgehammer-like subtlety, Denzel Washington's
character is named John Archibald, no, wait, make that John Q.
Archibald. Yup, like John Q Public, like John Q idiot who paid $10
to see this flick. Denzel, as always, turns in a stellar performance
that far outstrips the reach of this heavy-handed message movie. If
you didn't figure it out from the trailer, the message is: We need
health care reform. In a word, duh.
