Forest of Hatred

By Scott Snider

“Brandon, give it back!” yells Grisham, as Brandon has taken the boy’s trademark winter cap. Grisham is 14, he wears a tan suede jacket, blue jeans, winter boots, and carries a pocketknife.

“Na, Na, Na, Na, Na. Loser!!” taunts Brandon. Brandon, the younger brother of Grisham, is 11 years old, very immature and likes to get into mischief.  Brandon sticks out his tongue at Grisham.

“Don’t give me that crap, just give me back my cap. One of these days, you’ll have that tongue of yours, frozen to a pole.” says Grisham.

“WOOF! WOOF!” barks, Wolfie. Wolfie is a big dog, with dark brown fur. His sharp jaws can cut into about anything. “See now, you jerk. You upset the dog. Allistair’s going to be very disappointed with you.” snaps Grisham.

“No, he’s going to be mad at you. You started it, by yelling at me.” replies Brandon.

The noise of the dog startles the old man, who walks in, wearing robes, and looks to be about in his late sixties. The two boys look at him, as soon as he walks in. He is a very wise, and intimidating to the two young kids.

“That’s enough!” snaps Allistair, the wise wizard. “Brandon, give the boy back his cap, and stop fooling around. You two will upset the whole nation with your nonsense.”

“Okay, I guess.” mutters Brandon, as he gives Grisham the winter cap back.

Grisham takes his cap back, puts it on, then pets Wolfie. “It’s okay, Wolfie. It’s okay. You’re a good dog.” Wolfie starts licking Grisham’s face.

“I have a task for you.” says Allistair. “You’re the oldest boy with the most training, so I need you to listen up, and listen good.”

“Ok, what do you want me to do, wise one?”

“It seems that we are running a little low on firewood. I need you to run over to the Baileys to purchase some firewood for me. Without firewood to heat up this cabin, we could all freeze to death,” says Allistair, and he turns to Brandon, “and I know you wouldn’t want that, would you?”

“I wouldn’t want that at all, sir.” mutters Brandon.

Allistair turns to Grisham. “Here is five gold pieces to pay for the wood. Now run over, and get it. And before you go, I have to give you this.” says Allistair.

 “What is it?” asks Grisham.

“Here.” says the wizard, as he gives the boy a small, blue crystal. It looks like it contains magical powers. “It’s a warp stone. Anytime you’re run into trouble on the way, use this stone, to teleport back here. Now, go.”

The boy walks out the front door, and into the cold, icy plains. There is a little blizzard happening outside of the cabin. From the boy’s point of view, to the left is a dark, gloomy forest, to the right, is a pathway, in the snow, and judging by the footprints, someone has travelled along the path recently. The path leads along some pine trees, to two more cabins.

“Ok, the left leads to the haunted forest Allistair has been telling me about,” says Grisham, to himself. “So, I must walk up the pathway, to the right, which leads to the Baileys.”

Grisham travels through the blizzard, up the snowy pathway on his right, and has reached the two cabins, within a few minutes. One cabin, to his left, has a sign on the top. It says: Bailey’s General Store. To the right, is a cabin, which looks very plain. The doors are all shut, and the windows have all been covered up with black drapes. It is rumoured that an evil has been brewing around that cabin, and no one dares to go near it.

“There’s the Baileys’ house. Allistair needs the firewood, so I’ll go inside.” says Grisham.

As soon as the boy enters the cabin, he is greeted by a man, and a woman. The man and the woman, are married, and in their late thirties.

“Welcome, Grisham.” greets Robert Bailey. “It’s been a while, since you’ve come in without old-man Allistair.”

“Robert! That’s not very productive to talk about the wise one like that,” snaps Deidre Bailey. “Now, what can we do for you?”

“Allistair sent me to purchase some firewood for our cabin. We’re running low.” says Grisham.

“Okay, I’ll give you 10 logs, but it’ll cost you five gold pieces. Is that alright?” says Robert.

“Robert!!” snaps Deidre, and then she turns to Grisham. “Let me tell you what. You can have the firewood, free of charge. It’s the least we can do. Allistair’s done so much for us, fending us off from kobolds.”

“Thanks, Deidre.” smiles Grisham, as he walks towards the door, with the firewood.

“WAIT!” shouts Robert, at the boy, barely catching him opening the front door. “I apologize for my rudeness. But I must warn you, not only as a neighbour, but also as a friend.”

“Ok, what is it, Rob?”

“My kids were having a snowball fight outside, and have just spotted packs of green scaly monsters, lurking around the forest, left to your house. They must be kobolds. My kids ran inside the house to tell me, because I told them to run inside, if you see any monsters lurking about,” warns Rob. “You must be careful. A lot of dangerous things have happened here, and Allistair has been telling us the evil is coming through the forest, near your house.”

“Thanks, Rob. I’ll notify Allistair about the kobolds. If you see any more, let us know.” says Grisham, as he walks out the general store, with the firewood.

The boy heads down the path, towards his house. He stops halfway, and sees something very suspicious as he looks toward his house.

“My Lord…Kobolds! My house is under attack,” cries Grisham.  “They must be the monsters Rob warned me about. Allistair and Brandon are in trouble. I have to go help them.”

Grisham drops the firewood, unsheathes his pocketknife, and runs toward the house. As the boy runs toward the house, a kobold spots him. The kobold stares at him, and prepares to fight.

The kobold swings his dagger at Grisham, but Grisham dodges, and then he stabs the kobold, in the chest with his trusty knife. “Arggggghhhh!” screams the kobold in pain. “Take that, you filthy beast.” says the boy.   The kobold drops down, wincing in pain. Blood gushes from his wound, and he succumbs out in the cold.

“I’ve got to make sure Allistair and Brandon are alright.” the journeyman says to himself, as he walks in his house. As soon as he walks in, he spots Allistair, surrounded by three kobolds, swinging their daggers, to attack the wizard. “EEhhhhh…Puny old mage. I will be wearing your skull when I slice your skin.” taunts the kobold.

“We shall see,” says Allistair, and soon he raises his right arm. “Lightning Storm!” shouts Allistair. Bolts of lightning come down from the sky, and fries the three kobolds. When the bolts stop, there is nothing left of the kobolds, except for burnt daggers, and ashes. Allistair, then spots Grisham.

“Grisham!” cries Allistair. “I’m glad you came back. Are you alright??”

“Yes, I’m alright.” replies the boy.

“HELP!!”, cries somebody at the back as Grisham and Allistair recognize the voice.

“Brandon!” cries Allistair. “We have to help him.”

Allistair and Grisham rush to the back, to help Brandon, who is scared, as two kobolds walk toward him. Wolfie is also at the scene, with Brandon, barking at the two kobolds. He is also afraid to attack them.

“Hang on, Brandon.” cries Allistair. “These maggots will taste my wrath.” Allistair, then raises his right hand. “Fire-Ball!” shouts Allistair, as a fireball generates from his hand, and strikes the nearest kobold. “Argggggghhh!” shouts the kobold, as he falls, and burns to the ground. The kobold turns into ashes in a matter of seconds. As soon as the kobold burns, the other kobold grabs a hold of Brandon, and soon, the kobold has its knife near Brandon’s throat.

“One more move, wizard, and the boy gets it, understand??” sneers the kobold. “AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! Help me, please!!” screams Brandon.

“HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!” as Grisham and Allistair hear laughter around the cabin. Wolfie is also surprised. “Where is this laughter coming from??” wonders Allistair.

“Foolish wizard. You are no match for me.” says the voice. An illusion of a man appears inside the cabin. The man is tall, with pale skin and a tattoo of a devil on the side of his head, wearing a dark purple uniform, and is carrying a wicked-looking sword.  “I am Demetrious, first servant of the Hinjo cult. This young boy of yours suits as a prime candidate of our army.” “Let me go!” yells Brandon.

“Let him go, you monster, or feel my wrath.” shouts Allistair.

“Yeah, old man, sure, like you can beat us.” replies Demetrious. “If you want to see him again, I suggest you meet me at my special meeting place, the tomb, in the forest. Should I remind you that there are ghosts lurking about?”

“I will not meet you nowhere!” shouts Allistair. “Now, let him go.”

“I wouldn’t try any of your voodoo on me.” says Demetrious. “First, because this is an illusion, and second, my kobold servant here will slash the boy’s throat, and he will just be lying in his blood. And you wouldn’t want me to do that, would you?? You wouldn’t to sacrifice the life of this young boy, just to show off your pathetic powers??”

Allistair and Grisham are in silence. “So, if you want to see him again, I suggest you take my advice, and meet me at the tomb. You’ve got 24 hours. If you don’t show up, this boy will be serving the Hinjo cult, forever!! HA! HA! HA!” says Demetrious.

Demetrious, the kobold, and Brandon all vanish into thin air. “Come back, you coward!” cries Allistair.

“He’s gone, wise one.” says Grisham. “There was nothing you or I could do.”

“I was afraid the Hinjo cult would come here.” says Allistair.

“What is the Hinjo cult?” asks the older boy. “And what do they want with Brandon?? He’s too young to be a warrior.”

“Now that you have to know, I will tell you. The Hinjo cult, is an evil organization, of the Empire, to train young boys, to become powerful ninja and samurai warriors,” explains Allistair. “They train these boys, to do pure evil. They kidnap young boys, and men, to brainwash them into serving the Empire, and with enough trained warriors, the Hinjo cult, could very well take over the whole world. If Brandon is in the hands of the Hinjo cult, this place is danger, as he will expose us, and the Baileys, to the Empire.”

“So, the first thing we have to do is to travel through the forest, and find this tomb Demetrious is talking about, right?” asks Grisham.

“Yes!” replies Allistair. “Now that Wolfie and you are well trained, you both must come with me, and the three of us will head into the forest, to rescue Brandon.”

“Yeah, that Demetrious has some nerve,” says Grisham. “But before we go, we should take our healing supplies with us. My guess is, that we’ll run into a lot of monsters.”

“Agreed.” says Allistair. “Let me get my staff, and our supplies, and we’ll be off.”

Grisham spots Wolfie hiding underneath Brandon’s bed. “HA! HA!” laughs the boy. “C’mon, Wolfie. It’s all over. We’re going to have to take you with us, so don’t be afraid.”

The wizard gathers his staff, and a pouch full of healing herbs and potions, and they set off into the gloomy forest.

Grisham and Allistair rush deeper, and deeper into the gloomy forest, as Wolfie, is leading the way, using the kobold’s scent. They have been in the forest, for about an hour, but have no clue on their whereabouts, or the location of the dark tomb.

“How long do we have to walk in this forest, before we find the tomb?” asks Grisham.

“I’m not sure. It could even be days before we find it.” replies Allistair.

“Days??” cries Grisham. “We only have 24 hours. How the hell are we going to find this damn place?”

“Watch your language!” snaps Allistair. “Wolfie has picked up the kobold’s scent. To my knowledge, the kobolds work for Demetrious. Which means, the kobolds that attacked the house must have come from the tomb.” Adds Allistair, “By the way, we might not even be strong enough, with just us three against Demetrious. The Hinjo cult is dangerous. There could be tons of samurai, and kobolds at the tomb right now, waiting for us. We could use another warrior to help us.”

“But we have to try.” cries Grisham. “My brother can be a pain in the butt sometimes, but we have to save him.”

“Yes, Grisham.” says Allistair. “But unless we have some backup, the Hinjo cult could wipe us all out. My spells are strong, but not against a whole army.”

Allistair stops in the forest. “Now Grisham, call Wolfie back, because we need to rest. My legs are getting tired from all that walking.”

“Wolfie! Come here, Wolfie!” calls Grisham. Wolfie barks, and runs back to the boy, and his wizard.

“Wise one, we need some firewood.” says Grisham. “I sure wish I would’ve brought that firewood I got from the general store.”

“Really??” smiles Allistair. “Watch this, boy!” Allistair snaps his fingers once. Instantly, the firewood Grisham dropped back at the cabin magically appears right in front of the two.

“Cool!” cries Grisham. “Could you teach me how to do that?”

“That’s phase one!” says Allistair. “Now we move onto phase two!” Allistair raises his right hand. “Fire-Ball!” he shouts, as a fireball shoots out of his hand, and strikes the firewood. Allistair has already set up a campfire, to keep Grisham, Wolfie, and himself warm.

            “Nice.” says Grisham.

“Ok.” says Allistair. “Now, Grisham. Did you bring any food?”

“Uh, no.” replies Grisham. “I thought you brought some food.”

“Darn.” says Allistair, then he smiles. “This just makes the trip more fun.”

            “What do you mean?”

“We can use Wolfie, to hunt down our food. Maybe we can catch a deer, or a wolf.”

Wolfie starts to bark at the forest. Allistair, looks a little confused at the dog, then Grisham looks toward the path Wolfie is barking.

“I don’t think we need to do that.” says Grisham, a little terrified. “Because….”

            “Because what??”

“Because, there’s a wolf coming at us, right NOW!!” shouts Grisham, as he unsheathes his pocketknife.

Allistair sees the wolf, charging toward them. With both hands clenching his staff, he starts swinging it at the wolf. The wolf lunges at Grisham, but it misses. “Arrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh!” the wolf growls. Allistair bashes the wolf with its staff, striking the fourth swing at its head. The wolf turns, and leaps at Allistair. Allistair is on the ground, with the wolf on top of him. He has his hands, clenched around the wolf’s throat, keeping it away from biting its neck. Wolfie is barking at the wolf, but terrified to help the hapless wizard.

“Hiya!” yells Grisham, as he lunges at the wolf, with his pocketknife. He stabs the wolf in the neck. “Arrrrggggghhhhhh!” growls the wolf, in pain. The wolf turns over, away from Allistair, and his life is draining out of him. In a minute, the wolf is lying there, motionless, with the knife in its neck.

“You saved my life, young fellow.” says Allistair, as he gives the boy a pat on his head. “You have trained very well, I can see it. We just may be ready to fight Demetrious.”

“I can see it now.” says Grisham, excitedly. “You, and me, against the rest of the universe. Isn’t that exciting?”

“Don’t get too excited, Grisham.” replies Allistair. “It was a close call, but that was just a wolf. The Hinjo cult is way more dangerous, than just a single wolf living in the woods.” The wizard, then looks at the dead wolf. “Now, we can use this wolf as our rations. Grisham, help me carry this wolf to our fire. I will then magically tie it to a stick, and begin to cook the beast.”

Grisham helps Allistair carry the lifeless wolf towards the fire. Allistair grabs three sticks, near the fire, and snaps his fingers. With one snap, the body is tied to a stick, held in between the two other sticks. The heroes sit down on the logs, and wait a few minutes, until the wolf is cooked, and Allistair takes the barbecued wolf off the fire, and Grisham sliced the food into four pieces with his knife. He cuts away at the charred, and they begin to eat the meat.

“Not bad at all.” says Allistair, as he bites into the wolf meat. Grisham then gives Wolfie a big chunk of the meat. The dog wolfs down the meat quickly. Grisham, then takes a chunk of the wolf meat, and begins to taste the food.

“This meat is really good.” says Grisham. “We should eat animals more often, don’t you think?”

Allistair begins to speak, but his meal is interrupted by a familiar beastial sound. Wolfie begins to bark as soon as hears the noises.

“Grisham, get ready to fight. There are kobolds around.” says Allistair, as he gets up and clenches his staff.

“Awww, not again.” wails Grisham. “Just as I’m having a good meal.” Grisham gets up, and unsheathes his pocketknife.

The kobolds run in the direction of the party, but not as all as what it seems. The kobolds don’t stop to fight the heroes, instead they run past them, and begin to flee. The kobolds are wailing, in terror.

“I wonder what they are afraid of.” wonders Allistair. “The kobolds aren’t even trying to kill us.” Allistair still has his staff, at the ready, just in case he has to battle.

“That’s strange.” says Grisham. “Kobolds aren’t afraid of us. Everytime we see kobolds, they always try to kill us.”

“Take that, you vermin.” yells a warrior. The female warrior throws her spear at the herd of fleeing kobolds. The female warrior, who has short dark hair, with gray eyes, runs toward the kobolds, grabs her spear, then stops when she sees Grisham, Allistair, and Wolfie around the campfire. Then, four females run up to the female warrior, all with different weapons, and wearing amazon-like clothes. The band of females approach the party.

“Master Donna.” says one of the females. The female, has blonde hair, with gray eyes, and wearing a quiver full of arrows, and carries a bow. “The kobolds are fleeing. I think we should chase them, and they will run to their leader.”

“Let them run.” replies Donna. “We’ll worry about them later. Now, we have to deal with old man, and his simpleton here.” Donna sees what is left of the barbecued wolf. “What the hell are you two doing in this forest, killing innocent animals? Don’t you realize how endangered animals here in this forest??”

“I’m not an old man, and my boy here is not a simpleton.” snaps Allistair.  “We are travelling this forest, because a friend of us has been captured by kobolds, led by the Hinjo cult. Now, if you dare stand in our way, I’ll strike the lot of you down.”

“You’re against the Hinjo cult too.” replies one of the females, with dark red hair, carrying a morningstar. “Master Donna, we should not attack these nomadic people. They are on our side.”

“Let me handle them in my own way.” snaps Donna, and then turns to Allistair, his staff clenched. “Now, old man. You, and the boy will come with us. We are in need of a wizard with magical powers. If you’re against the Hinjo cult, perhaps we can help each other out.”

“If I was to go anywhere with you, it will be on my own terms.” replies Allistair. “How do I know I can trust you?”

“You can trust us.” says another blonde female, with tan skin, carrying a sword. “The Hinjo cult have been brainwashing our tribe. We are losing more, and more members each month. We can work together, to stop the kobolds, and the Hinjo cult.”

“Rumor has it that one of the high servants of the Hinjo cult, resides in a dark tomb, northeast of here.” says the last female, with brunette hair, carrying giant shears. “We’ve fought monsters in that tomb a few times. Unfortunately, we always get outnumbered and are forced to flee.”

“You know where the tomb is?” asks Allistair. “We’ve been wandering in this forest for a few hours, trying to find it. Maybe we can help each other out after all.”

“Yes, a man named Demetrious has my younger brother.” explains Grisham. “If we don’t find the tomb within 24 hours of the time he got kidnapped, Demetrious says that my brother will serve the Hinjo cult together.”

“Come with us, to our hideout. We have a map to the tomb, as well as some weapons, and food.” says Donna.

“Well, we are in need of help. I don’t think just us three are strong enough to take on the Hinjo cult.” replies Allistair.

“Who are you people anyway?” asks Grisham.

“Ok, let me introduce ourselves to you.” says Donna. “The blondes are MacKay and Lisa. Lisa uses the bow and arrow, and MacKay is specially trained with the sword. Now, the dark haired one here is Theresa. Theresa is strong, and one of our useful members because of her deadly shears. The auburn carrying the ball and chain is Delafe, and finally I’m Master Donna, but you both can call me Donna.”

“Pleased to meet you, Donna.” says Grisham. “I’m Grisham, and the wizard you speak so much of is Allistair. I also brought my dog, Wolfie, along with us, to help us in our quest.” At the time, Wolfie is hiding behind a tree, scared. “Wolfie, it’s okay. You can come out now.” says Grisham. Wolfie comes toward the group, walking cowardly.

“We are a female tribe, known as ‘COUGAR’.” explains Donna. “We reside in this forest, in hiding of the Empire, and the Hinjo cult. We try to fend for ourselves the best we can, in this region. The Hinjo cult wants to brainwash us, into their minions, and use us, to destroy the Earth.”

“COUGAR?” says Allistair. “I never heard of you before.”

“Allistair…” says Donna. “I know you and your group are not very trustworthy, but you can trust us. We are against the evil, and together, we can help save your boy’s brother. It is very dangerous in these woods, so please, come with us to our hideout.”

“Alright, Donna.” replies Allistair. “I will trust you, and your clan. We are in need of some warriors.”

“C’mon, Wolfie. It’s time to go.” says Grisham. Wolfie follows Grisham, keeping its distance away from the clan. Allistair snaps his fingers, and the campfire goes out, in a puff of smoke.

“That takes care of that.” says Allistair, as Grisham, Wolfie, and himself follow COUGAR north, into the woods.

Grisham, Allistair, and Wolfie follow Donna and her tribe to a series of discoloured tents. The tents are huge, and are pink, and purple colours, held together with bamboo sticks. “Follow me!” says Donna, as she leads the heroes, and her comrades into the pink tent.

“COUGAR, you are dismissed.” says Donna, to her followers. “Let me speak with these men alone.”

“Thank you, Master Donna.” says Lisa, as MacKay, Theresa, Delafe, and herself leave Donna’s tent. Donna, then gives the heroes flasks of blue liquid. Allistair sees the blue liquid, suspiciously. “What is this liquid, and why should we drink it?” asks Allistair.

“Drink it!” replies Donna. “It is a thirst-quenching potion. It not only heals your wounds, it also allows you not to be thirsty, for at least 24 hours.”

Allistair and Grisham drink their potions, and they are immediately refreshed. “Wow!” cries Grisham. “This stuff is really good, and I feel I can take on a thousand kobolds.”

“We thank you for the refreshments, lady.” says Allistair. “But we need to get going to save Brandon. We would like a map to the tomb, if that is possible.”

“I wish you both could stay,” replies Donna. “But saving your friend is more important. We will help you both, by ways of a guide. My servant, not only has a map to the tomb, but she is a skilled ranger of these woods.”

“We need all the help we can get.” says Allistair. “Tell me, Donna, where can we find your servant?”

“I will lead you to her. Her name is Ashley, and she has been a member of COUGAR for a few years. She has trained very well, in these woods, and she will be a great asset to you both.” replies Donna. Donna leads Grisham, Allistair, and Wolfie, out of her tent, and into another medium-sized tent. This tent is white, with pink and purple polka-dots.

            “Ashley!” cries Donna.

“Yes, Master Donna??” replies Ashley. A woman walks out of the tent, in her twenties, with blonde hair, and blue eyes. She is equipped with a longsword and a dagger.

“These men here, are in need of your services.” says Donna. “They need to get to the dark tomb to save their friend, from Demetrious.”

“Hi, Ashley.” says Grisham. “I’m Grisham, and this is my dog, Wolfie.”

“Pleased to meet you, Grisham.” replies Ashley, as she shakes Grisham’s hand. Ashley, then turns her attention to the dog. “Your dog is so cute. I haven’t seen a dog in years.” Ashley pats Wolfie, and Wolfie licks Ashley’s face, liking the attention.

            “Ahemmmm???” mumbles Allistair.

“Oh!” remembers Grisham. “Ashley, this is my godfather, Allistair. He can be a little moody at times.”

“Nice to meet you.” says Ashley, paying little attention to Allistair, and more to Wolfie.

“Ashley, you should pay more attention to your mission, instead of loving up the boy’s dog all day.” lectures Donna.

“Awwwwww…okay!” mumbles Ashley. “It’ll be so nice to get away from that miserable master of mine.” thinks Ashley, to herself.

“Now, Ashley, do you have the map to the dark tomb in the woods?” asks Allistair.

“Yes, I do, right here.” says Ashley, as she pulls it out of her backpack. Ashley, shows Allistair the map, and they study the location of the tomb, from the COUGAR camp. “We have to travel north, then east, to get to the tomb. It is quite a long way from where we are.”

“Good, then I think we should leave as quickly as possible. We have only a short amount of time, to save Brandon from the Hinjo cult.” says Allistair.

“COUGAR is totally against the evil of the Hinjo cult.” replies Ashley. “That is why Master Donna has asked me to help you out. Now, let’s find this tomb, and kick some Hinjo cult ass!”

“Ashley’s my kinda girl!” says Grisham, to his dog.

“Farewell, heroes.” salutes Donna, as the heroes leave the camp. “If you are in any need of help, return here. We are your friends, you can trust us.”

“Thanks for your help.” calls Allistair. “You’re in our debt.”

Grisham, Allistair, Ashley and Wolfie leave the COUGAR camp, and head back into the gloomy forest, seeking the hideout of the Hinjo cult.

The three adventurers, and the dog have been scouring the forest for about three hours, following Ashley’s map, to try and find the dark tomb, the hideout of the Hinjo cult. They stop to rest.

“We don’t have much time.” says Allistair. “We’ve got about 12 hours left to rescue Brandon.”

“Don’t worry about a thing.” replies Ashley. “You’re in the hands of COUGAR. We’ll drive the Hinjo cult out of this tomb, faster than you can say cheese!”

“Confident little girl, are we?” says Allistair, as he chuckles for a moment.

“C’mon. Let’s get on our way, or I might not see my little brother again.” says Grisham.

“According to the map, we are very close to the tomb.” says Ashley. “If we walk about a mile more, we should be there.”

“You mean ‘run’ a mile more.” says Grisham. “There’s no point in walking, if we got to save my brother. And, I also want to kick the crap out of Demetrious.”

“Ok.” says Allistair. “Let’s get going. I’m too old to run, so I’ll catch up with you all as soon as I can.”

Ashley, and Grisham run in the direction of the tomb, with Wolfie leading the way. Allistair is behind them, deciding to walk the mile, due to his old age. As they walk, the forest ends, clearing a path into the open plains. Grisham commands Wolfie to stop, as they investigate the area.

“I think this is it.” says Grisham, as he sees a dark tunnel, guarded by a warrior, who appears to be a samurai. The area has a few pine trees, and mountains overhead. Allistair catches up to the party, and inspects the area.

“There’s a samurai warrior guarding the tunnel. The Hinjo cult must be in there.” says Allistair. “I think we should come up with a plan. That samurai looks dangerous, and experienced too.”

“Nah!” replies Ashley. “I think we should just bust in and take him out. C’mon, Grish!”

“I’m with you, Ash!” replies Grisham, as Ashley, Grisham, and Wolfie wander toward the tomb.

“Halt!” the samurai yells as he sees the three walk toward him. “Who are you, and what business do you have here?”

Wolfie begins to bark at the samurai, but unleashes his wicked-looking swords. “Go away, you cowardly mutt, before I slice you.” Wolfie cries, and runs toward Allistair in the forest.

“That’s no way to treat my dog.” snaps Grisham. “We’re here to rescue Brandon, and we’re gonna take you out, slimeball.”

“Oh, a pathetic boy, and his girlfriend are going to take me down.” laughs the samurai. “I am Shavick of the Hinjo cult, and my boss has given me orders to destroy any intruders that will try and invade the tomb.”

“I’m not his girlfriend, pal!” snaps Ashley. “Now, let us in the tomb, or prepare to feel my wrath!”

“Young female punk!” snaps Shavick. “Prepare to die, both of you!” Shavick prepares to battle, using his samurai swords. Grisham unleashes his pocket-knife, and charges at Shavick, but Shavick sticks out his foot, and Grisham falls to the ground. Shavick, sees Ashley, and runs toward her, with his swords unleashed.

“This should be interesting!” He! He! He!” laughs Shavick, with confidence. Ashley hesitates, and reaches into her pocket, looking for something magical to fight against the samurai.

“Take this, you dirtbag!” shouts Ashley, as she throws a handful of acorns at Shavick.

“It’s going to take a lot more than…….Heyyyyy!!” cries Shavick. “What’s happening to me. I can’t move.” Shavick’s legs have turned into stone!

“Help!” cries Shavick, despairingly. His upper body has turned into rock, and soon his head. “Lord Demetrious. Please forgive me, for I have failed you.” Those are the samurai’s last words, as he turns into a stone statue.

“Wow!” cries Grisham, as he was amazed by the attack. “Ashley, what was that?”

“Didn’t you see?” replies Ashley. “Those were my acorns, my magic acorns. They can turn anyone into stone. Just another mysterious power carried here by COUGAR.”

“C’mon, we have no time to waste.” says Allistair. “Whatever Ashley did, it worked, and got the samurai out of the way. Now, lets get going.”

Allistair walks down the stairs, into the tomb, as Grisham, Ashley, and Wolfie follow him down.  About a minute later, the heroes are in a floor, very deep underground. There are in a very dark tunnel, littered with bones, and a few rats

“Ooooooh, creepy.” says Ashley with a shrug.

“I’d say we keep walking, until we find our way. We’d better be careful down here, the battles we could get into could be very unpredictable.” says Allistair.

The heroes walk straight down the tunnel, and turn left down the next hallway. They make another left, then left, and left again.

“Dammit!” cries Allistair. “Why do we keep going left? I’m getting lost in this place.”

“Shhhhhhhhhh!” says Grisham. “I hear something coming.” The four of them hear footsteps coming down a corridor of the tunnel. The heroes walk back, and hide down the corridor of the tomb. Ashley peers her head down the corner of the wall, and sees two warriors come down the path. The warriors are dressed in tan coloured cloth, wearing cloth hats, and are carrying swords. Ashley turns her head toward the heroes.

“Oh, no!” whispers Ashley, trying to keep her voice down. “Those swords look sharp. What do we do now?”

“Let’s take ‘em out!” whispers Grisham back.

“Don’t be so hasty, boy.” whispers Allistair. “I’d say we confront them, and see what they’re doing here. If they are warriors, they must be on our side.”

“I dunno.” whispers Ashley. “Those warriors are creepy looking. They’re not on our side.”

“WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!” barks Wolfie. Wolfie runs down the corridor, and toward the warriors in tan.

“Oh, no! Wolfie!” cries Grisham.

“There goes our cover.” says Ashley, as Allistair, Grisham, and herself turn down the corridor to confront the two warriors.

Wolfie pounces at the first warrior. The warrior tries to reach for his sword, but could not get it. The second warrior, a female, kicks at Wolfie, and strikes him in the throat. Wolfie yelps, and is kicked off the warrior, and down the ground. The female warrior, confronts the dog, with a wicked laugh, and raises her sword, to stab him.

“NO!!” shouts Grisham. “Don’t hurt my dog. He’s young, and doesn’t mean anyone any harm.”

“Who are you?” says the female warrior. The warrior, with her bright yellow snake-eyes, gazes at the heroes.

“Ummmmmmmm……..We..We’re just here to…to rescue m.m.my brother.” says Grisham, in a scared tone.

The male gets up, and turns to confront the heroes. He has pale skin, and has the same bright snake-eyes as his female comrade. “Don’t be scared of us.” says the male warrior. “We’re both against the Hinjo cult as well. We just saw a boy, taken hostage by some green, scaly monsters.”
“That’s the boy we’re here to rescue.” cries Allistair. “Did you see where they went?”

“I think we saw them straight down this hallway, turning right.” says the female. “Just follow us, we’re on your side.”

“Alli, do you think we can trust them?” asks Ashley. “You know, they’re really creepy. Just look at those eyes.”

“Let’s just follow them!” replies Allistair. “And don’t call me ‘Alli’. I find it very irritating.”

“Hmph! You’re a shrewd one.” mutters Ashley.
Grisham, along with Allistair, Ashley, and Wolfie, follow the snake-eyed warriors down the hallway. They all turn right, and keep going down the creepy

tomb. The hallway is blocked by a wall.

“Oh, No!” cries Ashley. “We reached a dead-end. There’s no way we can save Brandon now.”

“Heh, Heh!” sneers the creepy male warrior. “You’re right. There’s no way you can save the boy now.”
“Who the hell are you guys anyway??” snaps Grisham. “Take us to my brother now.”
“You think you can make us??” sneers the gruesome female warrior. “The master wants to see you dead, and once we both kill you all, we’ll be handsomely rewarded.”

“Prepare for your doom!” shouts the male warrior, as he unsheathes his sword.

“You’ve crossed way over the line, pal!” shouts Grisham, as he unsheathes his pocketknife. Ashley and Allistair have their weapons at the ready. Wolfie runs into a corner, barking at the scene.

The male warrior tries to slice Grisham with his sword, but is unsuccessful. Grisham counters the warrior with a swing of his pocketknife, and he swings at nothing but air. Grisham tries again to stab at the male warrior, but jabs at his tan-coloured hat. The hat is swiped off the warrior’s head, with the knife caught inside the hat.

“You’ve got to do better than that, boy!” sneers the male warrior. Grisham, without his pocketknife, punches the warrior in the face with his fist. The male warrior falls to the ground. “Ha! Eat fist, pruneface!” taunts Grisham.

Meanwhile, Allistair and Ashley confront the female warrior, as she has her rapier unsheathed. Ashley starts the battle, kicking the female warrior in the chest.

“Arrrrrgggghhhhh!” shouts the female warrior, in pain. Allistair swings at the female warrior, in the hand, knocking her sword to the ground. The female warrior, and her comrade, are both leaning against the wall, and are trapped between the walls of the tomb, and the heroes.

“Had enough?” asks Ashley. “Or are you thirsty for more??”
“Die! Die! Die!” both warriors chant at the heroes. The more they chant, their voices begin to change. “Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!” the warriors begin to laugh, very deeply. The warriors have just begun, to change shape. Their swords, and clothes, begin to fall off the warriors, as their bodies begin to form. The bodies melt into smoke, and are beginning to revert to their true, hideous forms.

“Die! Die! Die!” the gruesome things begin to chant at the heroes. Their true identities, are a sickly white colour, with veins popping out of their skin. The eyes on their heads are irregular, and have drooly, eerie mouths. Both forms have three arms, one on the left, one on the right, and one in their chests. The hands are all different sizes, the one on the left is large, while the hand on the right is small, and the one on the chest is medium-sized. The creepy things have no legs, and they also have copper-coloured warts below their bodies, the largest, down below. The weird-things are armed with large, wicked looking axes.

“Ewwwwwww! Gross!” says Ashley. “What the hell are you, conjured vomit??”

“Who cares, let’s just kill these monsters.” says Allistair.

Allistair raises his staff, ready to cast a spell. “Fireball!” shouts Allistair, as a ball of fire shoots out of his hand, and strikes one of the axes of the white monsters. The handle of the axe, burns to cinders, leaving the monster vulnerable.

The second of the monsters, turns to Grisham and swings its axe, striking Grisham, and he falls. Luckily, he hasn’t been cut by the axe.

“Okay, you asked for it!” cries Grisham, as he gets up, and lunges at the monster with its pocketknife. Grisham scores a direct hit with his knife, striking the demon in the chest. Green blood pours from the wound, and the white fiend cries in pain.

“Waaahhhhhhh!” cries the wounded monster. The other weird-thing claws with its three hands at Ashley, and misses. Ashley stabs the monster with its sword, and green blood spews from the wound, onto the sword.

“Awwwwwww,” wails Ashley. “Now I have to clean my sword off after all this is over.”

“Enough of this.” shouts Allistair. “I’ll dispel these things back to the abyss.” Allistair, with his staff clenched, gets ready to cast a spell. “Portal of Shame, send these creatures, from whence they came.” A black hole opens, and it spews purple smoke, and acts like a vacuum. The portal sucks up toward the injured demons, and are about to be sucked into the portal.

“Waaaaaaaahhhhhh! Nooooooooooo!” cries the weird things, and they get sucked into the portal. The portal closes, in a flash of purple lightning.

“Wow! Cool!” cries Grisham. “I’ve never seen you do something like that before, Allistair.”

“Awesome!” cries Ashley.  “Can you teach me how to do that someday?”

“It’s a wizard’s secret!” replies Allistair. “Now, come on. We have to save Brandon. Who knows how much time we have left.”

Allistair, Grisham, Ashley, and Wolfie, get ready to leave, but Ashley spots one of the weapons, dropped by the phony warriors.

“Grisham, I think you should take this.” says Ashley, as she picks up the discarded sword.

“Why, Ash?” replies Grisham. “I haven’t used a sword very much, and besides, I already have my trusty pocketknife.”

“Get real!” says Ashley. “You’re not going to squash any monsters with that butter knife. C’mon, use the sword. What have you got to lose??”

            “I guess.” replies Grisham.

“And besides,” says Ashley. “I find teenage warriors with swords very attractive.” Ashley, then winks at Grisham. “You want to impress the ladies, don’t ya?”

“You’re right, Ash!” cries Grisham, as he takes the ironsword from Ashley. “From now on, Grisham Butler will now wield a sword. Beware Hinjo cult, beware Demetrious, because I, am a sword-fighter.”

            “That’s the spirit!” cries Ashley.

“Enough of your babble!” snaps Allistair, at Ashley and Grisham. “You’re wasting valuable time.” Allistair, then turns to Grisham. “Grisham, use the sword. I firmly believe that you will start using it soon.”

Allistair, and his group begin to venture deeper into the tomb, until he notices something valuable on the floor. “Hey, look!” he cries. “Those monsters dropped a map of this dark tomb. All we have to do is follow the directions on this map, and we’ll find Brandon, and Demetrious.”

The group takes the map of the tomb, and prepare to get ready to do battle.

The party of heroes, follow the map, and travel a series of directions inside the tomb, hopefully finding the area where Demetrious is hiding Brandon. Moments later, they reach a staircase, going down, heading deeper into the tomb. Allistair, glances at the map, and begins to speak.

“These stairs must take us to the place where the fiends are hiding Brandon.” Allistair then turns to Ashley, and Grisham. “I hope you kids are well prepared.”

“We’re not kids,” snaps Ashley. “Well, at least I’m not a kid. I’m just a mature young woman, trained to fight evil.”

“C’mon, Ash.” says Grisham. “The man always calls me a kid. You’re just not used to him, that’s all. He just kinda grows on you.”

“Ashley, Grisham,” says Allistair.  “Please. We’ve got more important things on our minds. We were just lucky to get as far as we are now. Who knows what other minions Demetrious is sending after us. Now, let’s just go.”

Allistair, Ashley, and Grisham, with Wolfie, travel down the stairs, venturing deeper into the tomb. The stairs end, and they reach another corridor. The adventurers head down the corridor, turn left, and reach another corridor. They walk through the corridor, and it stops in a great chamber, covered in red drapes. In the center of the chamber, lies an altar, that has stairs travelling up to the altar. Allistair, Grisham, Ashley, and Wolfie travel up the stairs, to the altar, and a familiar face lies lifeless, on the altar.

            “Brandon!” cries Allistair.

“This kid is this Brandon you’re trying to save.” says Ashley. “Cute little boy, ain’t he, Grish?”

“Not now, Ash.” snaps Grisham, and he turns to Allistair. “Allistair, what’s wrong with him? He’s not moving.”

“Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!” laughs an evil voice. “Allow me to explain what I’ve done to your little brat.” A tall man, in a purple suit, appears next to the heroes, floating in mid-air.

“Demetrious!” cries Allistair. “What have you done to Brandon, you @*^&@^*?”

“Now! Now!” sneers Demetrious. “There’s no need for harsh words. Brandon is under my suspension. He will soon be taken to my master’s place, and will serve the Hinjo cult, Forever!”

“We’re taking the boy home!” shouts Allistair.

“Oh,” says Demetrious. “I’d like to see you try.”

Allistair reaches out to pick up Brandon, but at the same time, Demetrious reaches out his arm, casting a spell on the motionless little boy. Allistair tries to pick up Brandon, but his arms go right through Brandon. Demetrious has just cast a spell, so Brandon appears to be nothing, but a translucent image. A few moments later, Brandon begins to fade, and then, he has vanished.

“Demetrious!” shouts Allistair. “Bring Brandon back, or face my wrath!” Allistair begins to raise his staff, as if he is about to cast a spell.

“Brandon is now in the hands of my master.” says Demetrious. “Now, I have no time for games. My minion, Darius, will keep you all entertained. Once he has vanquished you fools, we will extract your souls from your lifeless bodies, and you will all become our latest Samurai Zombies. Darius! Come here at once.”

A purple ninja appears at the altar, armed with a sai, and carrying a pack full of ninja knives. He has also brought a few skeletal warriors, armed with swords, for assistance.

“You called me, master?” speaks Darius.

“Keep these maggots at bay.” Replies Demetrious. “Kill them, but try not to cause too much damage to their bodies. We will need to use them later.” Demetrious then turns to the party. “Ta Ta, for now. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!” Demetrious, vanishes into thin air, as his laughter echoes throughout the chamber.

“Okay, old man.” says Darius, as he places his arm behind his back, ready to launch one of his throwing knives. “Show me what you got!”

Allistair raises his arm, in the air, ready to cast a spell. “Fire-ball!” yells Allistair, as a ball of fire shoots from his hand, and strikes one of the skeletal warriors. Instantly, the skeleton is burned to a crisp, what remains to be is a sword, covered by burnt clothing.

“Well, well, well…” sneers Darius. “The old man has a few tricks up his sleeve, but it won’t be enough to defeat me.” Darius, turns to Ashley, and throws his first knife at her. Ashley jumps out of the way, just in time, the knife barely missing her chest.

“Be Careful,” cries Ashley. “Mr. Purple here can throw really fast. That knife almost got me.”

“Woof! Woof!” barks Wolfie. Wolfie begins to charge toward Darius, and pounces on top of the dark ninja. Darius, drops his sai, as he is forced to wrestle with the dog.

“Get this mutt off me!” cries Darius, as he tries to shake off Wolfie.

“Grisham, Ashley,” says Allistair. “Now’s our chance. Let’s take out these pile of bones, and we’ll worry about the ninja later.”

The three skeletal warriors charge toward the party, all armed with swords. The first skeletal warrior swings its sword at Grisham, and misses. Grisham uses his newly acquired sword, and slashes the skeletal warrior at its thin neck. The head of the skeletal warrior is chopped off, and the rest of the body falls to the ground, and shatters.

“Easy as pie!” says Grisham, excitedly.

Meanwhile, the second skeletal warrior turns to Ashley, with its sword at the ready. Ashley, assesses the situation, and decides to attack the skeleton at its leg. She swings her longsword at the legs, slicing the legs off the warrior. The skeletal warrior falls to the ground, its bones shatter into many pieces.

“Ha!” cries Ashley. “Master Donna taught me that one.”

The third skeletal warrior turns its attention to Allistair. The warrior swings its sword at Allistair, barely missing him, as he dodges out of the way. As he dodges, he falls to the ground, with the skeletal warrior raising its sword, ready to stab Allistair.

“Oh, no.” cries Allistair. “I’m too old for brute strength, but you’re no match for my magic.” Allistair outstretches his hand at the skeleton, ready to cast another spell. “Ice!” shouts Allistair, as a blast of absolute zero power strikes the skeletal warrior, and freezes it, making it immovable. Allistair gets up, and bashes the frozen skeletal warrior, with his staff.

“Hiyah!” shouts Allistair, as the warrior breaks into a million pieces.

“That’s the end of those boneheads.” says Grisham.

            “Arrrffffff!” cries Wolfie.

            “Oh, no.” cries Grisham. “Wolfie!”

“Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!” laughs Darius. “Man’s best friend is no match for me.” Wolfie limps toward Grisham, in pain. Wolfie has been sliced in the leg, by Darius’ sai.

“Wolfie, stay!” says Grisham. “This dude’s gonna pay for hurting my dog.”

“Surrender now,” says Darius. “Surrender your power to the Hinjo cult.”

“Never!” cries Grisham. “You’re gonna be sorry, you wench.”

“Down with Demetrious, and the Hinjo Cult!” cries Ashley.

“Take this!” shouts Darius, as he throws another knife at Grisham. The knife knocks the hat off his head, and pins it to the floor.

“Okay,” shouts Grisham, angrily. “You asked for it!” Grisham lunges at Darius, armed with his sword. Darius, backs away, and as Grisham swings at the ninja, Darius blocks the sword, using his sai dagger. The two warriors are in a struggle, Grisham with his sword, and Darius with the sai. Darius, with all his strength, knocks Grisham’s sword out of his hand, and into the air.

“You’re mine, kid!” sneers Darius, as he points his sai at Grisham. Darius thrusts his sai at Grisham, but Grisham dodges the blow, unleashes his pocketknife, and stabs Darius in the chest.

“Ahhhhh…” croaks Darius, in pain, his arm, clenching the wound. “You’ll……you’ll never….save the b.boy.” Blood gushes out of Darius’ wound. A moment later, he succumbs.

“Good move, boy!” applauds Allistair. “That fiend never knew what was coming.”

“Now Ash,” says Grisham. “This is when my trusty pocketknife comes in handy.”

“I know, I know,” wails Ashley. “No one can win against your knife…Whatever..”

Allistair examines Wolfie’s wound, and rubs one of his healing herbs where Darius slashed the dog. Instantly, the herb takes effect, and Wolfie’s wound disappears.

“That should take care of the dog.” says Allistair.

“Woof! Woof!” barks Wolfie, and runs toward Grisham. A moment later, he pounces on Grisham, and licks his face.

“Ok, boy!” laughs Grisham. “You’re a good dog.”

Ashley takes out a magical blue stone, and begins to raise it in the air.

            “What’s that?” asks Grisham.

“It’s a COUGAR style warp stone.” says Ashley. “I will use it to transport us out of this dungeon, and back to COUGAR headquarters.”

“That’s a great idea!” cries Allistair. “Now, we don’t have to get lost in this place, trying to find our way out.”

“Return!” chants Ashley. Instantly, the heroes are transported out of the tomb, and back to Ashley’s tent, in COUGAR headquarters.

“Ahhhhh!” says Ashley. “Nice to be back home.”

“Brandon…”says Grisham. “I couldn’t save my brother, from the evil hands of Demetrious. He’s going to be a mindless zombie for the Hinjo cult.”

“Don’t feel bad, boy.” says Allistair, as he comforts Grisham. “We did the best we could. It’s not our fault. We just have to find another way to save Brandon.”

            “Ashley?” asks Allistair.

“Yeah, what is it??” replies Ashley.

“May I speak to your master, alone?” asks Allistair.

“Wooooooooo, ok. I’m sure the two of you could hit it off! Don’t tell me you have the hots for her.” taunts Ashley.

“Don’t be so childish, and immature!” snaps Allistair. “It’s none of your business why I want to talk to her!” Allistair continues. “If you’re going to be like that, I’ll just find her myself.” Allistair hurries out of Ashley’s tent, into the outer headquarters of COUGAR.

“Whoa, can’t your old man take a joke, Grish?” asks Ashley.

“Don’t worry,” answers Grisham. “He’s just frustrated about not saving my brother. Alli’s not used to losing out in his adventures.”

Meanwhile, Allistair finds Donna’s tent, the pink tent with dark polka dots. Allistair comes in the tent, ready to speak to Donna.

            “Allistair!” cries Donna. “You’re back.”

“Fortunately, we chased the Hinjo cult out of the tomb. You won’t have to worry about them anymore.” answers Allistair.

“Great!” cries Donna. “The Hinjo cult was a thorn up our butts for the longest time. Anyways, did you guys save Brandon?”

“No, we didn’t. Lord Demetrious still has our boy. Brandon’s like a son to me, and it’s hard for me to think what the Hinjo cult might do to him.”

“I think I know someone who can help.” answers Donna. “In a continent to the south, there’s a group, recruiting many kinds of warriors, that is trying to rid the world of evil. They are called the ‘Liberation Council’.”

“Ok, how are we going to get to this Liberation Council?” asks Allistair.

“I’m just getting to that. In return for chasing out the Hinjo cult, we will provide for you a boat, that will take you near the Liberation Council. Seek the one named Aarha. He might be able to help you. And…” says Donna.

            “And, what?” asks Allistair.

“Take care of Ashley. I will let her go with you. Mainly, she needs the training.” replies Donna.

“Oh, no.” wails Allistair. “I’m not taking the brat. Isn’t there anyone else that can come with us?”

“Allistair,” says Donna. “Ashley may be young and a little immature, but..”

            “But what??” snaps Allistair.

“She will be a great warrior someday. Ashley always wanted to change the world, and she has learned a lot quicker that any of us. If anyone in COUGAR can help you the most, it’s Ashley.” says Donna.

“Okay, Donna.” says Allistair. “I’m sure the girl can come. It could also be good for Grisham to finally make some friends, especially females.”

“Now,” says Donna. “My girls will help carry the boat to the ocean. You go get Grisham and Ashley.”

Allistair walks into Ashley’s tent, and tells Ashley and Grisham the story about Aarha, and the Liberation Council. Meanwhile, Donna rallies the other COUGAR members, to come with her, and carry the boat. Soon, they all meet, and they head off into the forest, and the ocean.

Several minutes have passed, as COUGAR members, Ashley, Allistair, Grisham, and Wolfie travel south, close to the ocean. Donna, Lisa, Theresa and MacKay are carrying the boat, while Allistair, Ashley, Grisham, and Wolfie follow. A few moments later, the group reaches the icy ocean, covered with jagged iceburgs. The COUGAR members set the boat into the ocean.

“This is as far as we can take you.” says Donna. “The boat is equipped with a ‘Destination Gem’, that will take you to the Liberation Council. Set sail, and good luck.”

“Thank you.” says Allistair. “We’ll be in your debt.”

“Farewell, heroes.” says Lisa. “Take good care of Ashley for us.”

“Buh bye, girls.” says Ashley, as she waves to her fellow COUGAR members.

Allistair, Grisham, Ashley, and Wolfie board the boat, and the Destination Gem flashes green. It will soon take the adventurers to the southern continent. Donna, Lisa, Theresa, and MacKay wave to their friends, and the party heads off, as the sun sets into the horizon.
