Araya was born in January 22, 1934 in Segeneiti. His father was a soldier for Italian administration. At the age of 5, he went to Adi Neamn with his family. But he went back to Segeneiti to his aunt to study at an Italian school, until they opened school at Adi Neamn. He took his 5th & 6th grade at Keren middle school after that at Asmara's teacher's training school in Asmara. He completed his 1 year teachers training and worked as a teacher in Asmara for a while and then he went back to Adi Neamn to work as a teacher. Because of his father's job as a governor of the region he had always extra assignments to document all the issues and write applications. May be that explains his well known good hand writing.
He got married at the age of 21. After 2 years at the age of 23 he had to move away to Addis Abeba because of family problem after his fathers death.
Life in Addis Abeba was not easy the first 10 years. Then he started as an auditor at Meta Bira bear factory. He worked there for 8 years until the derg regime prisoned him for 8 months without reason. After his release he wanted to go back to Asmara. He took a job as an auditor at Melotti bear factory in Asmara. After living in Ethiopia for 23 years, he went back to Eritrea with his family. Again After working a couple of years in Melotti he took another job in Massawa at Salina salt factory. 2 years later he went back to Asmara and started working as chef auditor at Chemical Corporation.
