Chapter One - Awakening
"What do you mean there's no fish tonight?!" Cried Josh. "I mean that there are no fish tonight, I believe the sign said there were to be orc meat and baguettes." replied Maku. They both stood in a long narrow corridor in which the heavy infantry was stationed. Like the rest of their infantry they were dressed in platemails. Maku had long deep blue hair that cascaded over the shoulders of his mail, his weapon of choice was of course an ancient knight's greatsword that had been passed down through the generations, from his great grand father. Josh, on the other hand, had spikey deep red hair and used his well sharpened flamberge.
It's the first night of the harvest moon! Smoked salmon goes best with sake, not orc meat and baguettes!" Josh protested. "Thats true, but in times of war the rations are limited," explained Maku handing Josh the rations.
After they finished their dinner they settled in for a good nights rest. Being that the castles rooms were divided amongst the nobels and captains, the infantrys that were not dispatched for guard duties were forced to sleep within the corridors. Maku slept sitting in a corner with his sword close at hand, while Josh sprawled out across the floor.
They both awoke at once to a high pitched inhuman scream. Standing up it was clear that they were the only ones that heard this, the rest of the infantry was sound asleep. "What was that?" Wispered Maku. "I have no idea" replied a still half asleep Josh. They heard the scream again, and this time it was incredibly loud, magnified by echoing through the many corridors. The soldiers all around them made no movement at all, save for their regular breathing and snoring. This time the noise came from inside the wall behind them. As they both staired at it, the wall started to shake, each time the scream getting louder. So loud both Josh and Maku had to jam their hands against their ears.
The wall quaked violently until it crumbled. Josh stepped back, tumbling over a sleeping soldier. He tried to wake him, but it had no use. The soldier just snorted and turned over. It was obvious there was no wway he was waking up. Maku peered into the dust, squinting from the lack of light. Josh headed to the beginning of the corridor, grabing the something at the corner and appeared once again at Maku's side with a blazing tourch.
What they saw was a room. Dank, dark...not like the rest of the castle at all. In the center of the room was a small staircase going down. As they decended down the staircase, which seemed to go on forever, it started to change. From well carved white stone to dark, lose stones slopped together with mortor. At last they finally reached a rusted bronze sign that read: Catacombs that lie infront of a great opening.
Walking into the hall they were over-whelmed by an overpowering stench of death. They found themselves surrounded by shelves and shelves of cloth-lined bones that seemed to stretch on for an eternity. Making their way down this great hall of death, it seem to take on a different tone, there were bones not only piled on the shelves but all over the floor, as if the bodies were simply piled here to decay.
"Oh my god." Exclaimed Josh. "I know" said Maku noting the inhumaness of it all. "No.." said Josh picking something off the floor, "Not that.....this" he held the object to the light. "This is the bones of demons" he said as Maku realized the the object was an enormous demon skull. "Let's keep going, I want to know exactly why this was sealed off. It seems a bit strange that a catacomb would have been sealed off, not to mention why someone was down here screaming."
They kept on going, turning a corner they found themselves in a gigantic room, bones of demons and humans alike piled approximitely seven foot in the air. Light surrounded them illuminating the room. It was obvious that a great battle was fought here. And at the top of it all, a great statue of a woman. As they climbed the rubble, they noticed there was alot more than just one statue,There was an enormous demon behind her. A knight statue dressed in oddly fashioned armor was in front of her, seemingly lunging at the demon. A mage in the corner, with his hands in the air, as if to draw a symbol. In his other hand there was a open book, not part of the statue but a out of place looking green book.
Maku immediately went to it, and started flipping through the pages only to find that the language the book was written, he had never seen before. Stange symbols that seem to pulsate under his touch. Triangles with lines through them inside of a circle. Josh on the other hand seemed to be mysified by the statue of the woman. The demon behind her didn't seem to be atttacking her at all. It seemed to be lunging at the knight infront of her. At the Knight that strangely was attacking the woman statue.
Looking around the room, he noticed other statues too, only he half-realized what these statues were. He had seen these before, they were Stone Golems...and they were around the entire room, fighting against other stoned statues of humans. He started examining the statues, feeling what they were made of. Each statue gave him a undeniable eerie feeling, but none as much as the woman. As he touched her face he felt a freezeing shiver course through his spine. At the same time the inhuman scream emerged again, knocking Josh against the woman statue. It rocked back and forth as Josh tried to both catch it and cover his ears at the same time. The statue tumbled to the ground shattering into millions of peices as Maku watched helplessly and the scream stopped. A dark cloud escaped from the statue, hovering above the ground before taking the shape of the statue once more. She stood just like the statue, a mocking smile spread across her face. She looked up at Josh saying "Thank you for releasing me, it has been such a long time."
A sort of hissing crackled laugh arose. As sudden as she appeared, she vanished, disappearing int the darkness.
"Ok" said Josh in a half-wispering voice, "I think we should be going back now." "Yes, definitely." Maku added, while scurring up the book running back toward the entrence, back to before this whole mess started.
