Today the most venerable representatives of the Cedars of Lebanon, which once covered the entire country, are in the Besharre region of North Lebanon. Some 400 trees, many between 1,200 and 2,000 years old stand on slopes 2,000 meters high in the shadow of 3,100-meter peak of Qornetes-Sawda.
The Cedars of Lebanon are of creatures of God. They are mentioned
many times in the Books as the symbols of power, life, and
strength. There is a strong sense of spirit when you are in their
presence. Throughout history, the Lebanese Cedars were used for
everything from building the Temple of Solomon to preserving
ancient Egyptian mummies. Phoenicians used their wood to build
their legendary ships. Ancient Egyptians utilized their wood to
build their first temples. Their mummies were coated with the
Cedar's sap because it is impenetrable to microbes and bacteria.
These days, the forest of the Cedars by the Qadisha Valley is so
endangered, it is protected as an international landmark.
