Update - #60
January 6, 1999

Hi all- Hope everyone is starting out their new year well. Just a few but important things to pass along.

As you know, PREY's first anniversary is coming up next week ( January 15th). I know that we have mixed feelings- joy at having discovered such an exceptional show and frustration at how it was treated. However, the only way we can help PREY is to approach the situation from a pro-active position. If we believe we have lost all hope, then it is true. I would like to suggest some ideas for the coming weeks as ways to continue to help PREY's chances for future production. Please take a look and join in with those activities that you feel comfortable with.

  • As I have mentioned in past updates, Mr. Schmidt will be working on some new avenues for PREY this year. Even without all the details, I know that he went through some very gut wrenching times with the industry. I know that one of the high points in the whole situation was the positive feedback he got at our site and from his knowledge about our activities. I would like to suggest that anyone who feels inclined to do so to write a letter to Mr. Schmidt sharing with him the passion and positive feelings you have for PREY. So often I have read the empassioned letters and emails and thought that if only TPTB could see how deeply this show impacts people, surely they would know the quality they have on their hands. I know for a fact that the love people have for PREY has moved and touched Mr. Schmidt. Well, I think it would be a wonderful boost if we could share with Mr. Schmidt how we feel about PREY. I will be happy to forward on any letters or cards that you send to me. Most of you have my mailing address, but if you don't please email me and I will send it out to you. My email GEvers3@aol.com
  • As most of you know, PREY once again came out as number one at the Celebrity 1000 poll in both Favorite Show and ( not the category I would like) Favorite Departed Show. I have sent Mr. Schmidt copies of the poll results. As he mentioned, he needs facts to take into meetings and this is part of that. Anytime we can supply him with data about PREY and its potential marketability, we help him in his and our cause. With that in mind, I will encourage everyone to continue to vote at the Celebrity 1000 poll whenever you can. The URL is http://www.celebrity1000.com/main.html
  • I am sure that you all have seen the newspaper stories everywhere about the "new" approach needed to developing new series. From Brian Lowery in the LA Times to network heads from UPN, ABC and WB, executives are publically saying that business as usual just won't work anymore. Could be the fact that every major network lost viewers this past season and that only the WB network ( which has not cancelled one of its new dramas) was the only network to show growth. Just last night I read an article on ABC where Jamie Tarses was quoted as saying that they needed to let shows develop audiences and support their new shows more, and not worry so much about ratings-specifically referring to Cupid ( I know what you are thinking, trust me, me too!!!). Of course we all know that PREY would be a star in the ratings lackluster fiasco that has shaped up this season. Bet they wish they had that 8.1 that PREY opened with! Anyway, we won't help PREY by replaying old injuries, what we need to do is show people how PREY is a perfect example of the "new" programming that all the networks seem to be finally acknowledging that they need.As you know from my updates over the last few weeks, the musical chairs at the top network positions have been in full swing this season and new names are everywhere. No big surprise- many of the new heads of entertainment didn't come up through the ranks of the networks, but from cable instead.( You know the old saying that a sure sign of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result!) In a bigger way than at any other time in recent history, networks know they have to try new ideas and change how they do business. Let's approach all of them with the facts about PREY and its enduring appeal ( and I must say international appeal- our board is beginning to look like the United Nations!!). Fresh start, new people- let's take this opportunity to use our letters to them to expand on the realities that they are dealing with now. PREY is an example of what they need. For addresses of network executives, click here or go to our campaign site at http://start.at/prey and click on the contact page.
  • Conventions continue to be a great way to share the message that PREY fans are out there and active. If you hear of conventions coming to your area, please share that with me and I will post it to see if we have members who would like to attend. I will also do some research and see what is coming up and post what I find.
  • Our message board is in its final testing stages now and I hope to let everyone know in a couple of days what the new URL will be. I am thrilled to be able to have a board for us that combines the best of our old board with the added benefit of me being able to monitor it on a daily basis to try and keep things going smoothly. A BIG thanks to Jeanne for all her hard work on this. ALL, and I mean ALL, the credit goes to her for finding and setting up this great board. I will create a prominent link from our campaign site to the new board. Of course, we will still have the WB board and I assume Tiffany will keep her board up, this will just give us a managed message board that we don't have to worry about. I think Preymakers will feel more comfortable posting at a board that is not aligned with WB. As always, I encourage people to post at ANY message board where we can spread the PREY message. The Sci-Fi board and other entertainment boards are all appropriate places to share about our campaign and PREY. Be sure to leave our campaign site URL http:// start.at/prey anytime you visit a board so interested people can link back to us. Remember whenever you travel in cyberspace, let people know about PREY whenever possible.
  • I will be adding a link in the resources section about a business that has scripts for sale, including PREY scripts. They have a section on their site where they list links to television shows and campaigns, so we will do a link exchange. Please understand that I am not endorsing their business, just providing some information as a resource that I thought PREY fans might appreciate. Please make sure that you check them out before doing business with them. It is very common in LA to find people selling "original" scripts that are simply zeroxed copies. The site is at http://www.scriptshop.com The contact there is Philip Onington. Thanks to Liz for bringing this to my attention and contacting them.

It is hard to believe that it has been a year already. PREY and this campaign have been experiences that have touched so many people. What a wonderful year it has been! I look forward to our new year and will continue to work on ways to help this incredible idea come back to us. PREY is the right show at the right time and I can't help but believe that Mr. Schmidt's remarkable idea can find receptive individuals who will see in it what we do. Patience, passion, and persistence are the keys and we, the people who love this show, have them. Let's work to unlock that cage and bring this vision out where it belongs.
